I find that as the food truck culture grows both in Halifax and around the province, rallies like the one held earlier in July in the city are a great way to sample trucks that are outside my usual stomping grounds. There were several new-to-me trucks, including Taco Stiles, a popular slinger of Mexican-inspired grub from the hub of Nova Scotia, Truro. They had five tacos to choose from: beef, chicken, pork, fish and veggie, as well as taco fries. At $ 5 – 6 each, they were a reasonable price and were advertised as being made with fresh flour tortillas, although corn would have been my preferred choice. We had gotten there shortly after the gates had opened so while there were 10 – 15 people in most lines, everything still moved fairly quickly. I ordered the Notorious P.I.G, the pork taco, and their«signature» fish taco, choosing the same types as I did at another food truck there to compare the two. It probably took 15 – 20 minutes from the time we got in line until when we got our food, which was quite reasonable. It was immediately noticeable that these tacos looked better — more proteins and more toppings. The fish in their signature taco is hunks of battered haddock, mixed with a pineapple sauce, lime crema and shredded cabbage. The fish was fresh and flaky and had a nice crunch from the light batter, and the sweet pineapple sauce was a tasty one. The lime crema didn’t really stand out, but a squeeze of the lime slice did the trick to add some acidic contrast. The cabbage added some more crunch and helped flesh out the taco some more beyond just the fish. The Notorious P.I.G. was another winner. The meat was plentiful and had a well balanced BBQ sauce, and the coleslaw wasn’t so saucy that it made the taco even messier. The cilantro I can do without and I feel like we may have thinned out the generous topping of it. My wife preferred the meat on our previous taco, but this was still a darn good taco. It’s great to see entrepreneurs in Truro putting out a great product like this, especially when they come down to the city now and then so that I can sample their tasty wares. PS. They really, really need to stop the caps lock in their social media. The owner is under the age of 50, so there’s no excuse for something so unprofessional.
