Amay’s House

The last time I came to this unit it was a Mexican place with an absolutely insane owner. So glad Miss Loco is gone.
Amay means Mother in Burmese and the friendly family staff makes it feel like you’re at your aunt or grandma’s place for dinner.
I’ve only been to one other burmese place in the Joyce area. Amay is the better of the two.
We started with the tea leaf salad. Fantastic flavour and texture contrast with beans and nuts. Then had the prata with potato curry. Not as flaky as I’d like it but dipped in the curry it was good.
Fish cake with their house sauce were very tasty. Usually you just taste filler. And lastly we had the fish noodle soup which uses catfish. It’s more of a thick soup. Really unique and the fried chana dal gives it a crunchiness.
All the prices are very reasonable. Everything tastes fresh and homemade. Need to explore this menu more.

We really enjoyed their ginger salad and tea leaf salad! We also ordered a slight variation to their veggie stir fry and requested just sauteed bok choy, which was gently flavored, but not bland, and perfectly cooked.

I have had Burmese in San Fran, New York and London.
Amay’s IS FANTASTIC! Burmese is my all time favorite food. It is a fusion of Indian, Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese… wonderful.
The Tea salad was perfect. The Prata with yellow peas was super. We had their new salad and it was great.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will return again.

A friend heard of this place and read good reviews, so here we go. The fermented tea leaf salad, laksa, and pratha were talked about so we ordered those.
I had no idea what to expect with the fermented tea leaf salad. Forget any green leafy salad ideas you had! It was the most unusual salad I’ve ever eaten. It has a unique taste that is rather difficult to describe. It was mildly spicy and it had a crunch from the fried beans in it. I really enjoyed it, definitely not your typical salad! The serving size appeared small, but was filling.
Pratha with curry sauce was very good. Nice thick and flaky roll of pratha served with curry sauce. $ 5 for one piece and add only $ 1.50 for an extra piece!
Laksa was good, nice texture to the noodles and tasty.
You don’t go here for atmosphere. It’s a mom and pop hole in the wall that serves up good food.
Will come again to try other menu items. Nice to have this type of cuisine amongst all the other Asian restaurants around the ‘hood. Check this one out and keep them in business!

Oh, so good! We came as a party of 3 @ dinner time. Tried it for the first time. The lady server (owner?) was very patient and encouraged sharing for first time visitors like us.
First, the Price = Affordable. Reasonable in accordance with the portion.
Tea Leaf Salad = Wowed by it. As advertised. Loved the texture!
Prata with Curry Chicken = We were looking for a Roti Canai equivalent so this was recommended. Tried with one piece. Ended up having seconds with 2 pieces. The Curry Chicken itself was good — a different take of the usual one we often get from Indian or Filipino cuisine.
Fish Noodle Soup = It was okay. Good to know what the praise was about.
If you are not sure what you’re getting, try sharing your orders with one another. It’s fun.
The lady server even sampled us with their spicy anchovies mixed fried garlic or something. Ended up taking a pack @ $ 5. Finished it in one sitting the next day. LOL. Really good with rice!

Food is really good. We order from them for the company meetings and everybody loves it.
They only deliver it if is a big order and they don’t open on tuesdays.
I totally recommend this place.

Service was quick and diligent, quick to answer questions regarding unfamiliar dishes although relativity not busy at the time. Had the Burmese fish soup and was pleasantly surprised. Fish cakes tasted great, assume made fresh. The fermented tea leaf salad must be tried. A nice contrast of flavours and textures. Ordered roti at the same time as everything else, but was the last to arrive. Roti was the most average of what I would say was a pretty solid meal. Will be looking to return sooner than later!

A bunch of us went out for dinner before bowling on Thursday night. After a bit of restaurant searching we settled on Amay’s House. I found it on Unilocal and after listening to 4 indecisive people hum and haw I made an executive decision and picked Amay’s House! Haha!
We ended up sharing a bunch of dishes and we eat got our own main course. I settled on the Pork Belly Curry. It was ok. The main problem with my dish is that the pork belly was a little too over cooked for my tastes. I found it a bit dry and tough to chew. Pork Belly… The way I like it is suppose to be juicy and soft.
Also, I found the curry a bit flavourless. It was not spicy but it lacked any type of distinctive flavour. I guess I expected more. We shared 2 types of roti: the regular roti with a meat curry dipping sauce and an egg roti. Both were ok. But to me it was a bit heavy. I like my roti to be flaky and light. Amay’s roti was more like a bread. Heavy and dense.
Overall, Amay’s is ok. If pressed I would come back, but with all the alternatives out there I don’t see myself coming back in the near future!

Fish noodle soup was really tasty. If it was your first time it’s definitely a safe bet. Portion isn’t that big though! We also had the beef rendang. It was ok.

I love love love this eatery. It is so quaint, the food is delicious, and the owners are so sincere and welcoming — qualities that drive me to local mom and pop restaurants.
The prices are well beyond reasonable, especially for flavours offered. One of my favourite dishes is the beef rendang (though I did wish they would balance the portion of rice to the rendang).
I don’t live on this side of town, but I definitely don’t mind the drive for the sake of an inexpensive, delicious, and unique, date night!

Today’s ordered menu was fermented tea salad, parata with chickpea curry on the side. Potato tofu curry. Plain biryani. So flavourful as usual!

I stumbled onto this place when the hotpot place we planned to go had a waiting list of 2.30 hours. We ordered their Tea Leaf Salad ($ 7.5), their Keema Prata with Lamb ($ 6), their Laksa ($ 8.5) and their Royal Noodle Salad (7.5) to share.
First off, minus points for their weird and very weak tea, it was one of the worst tea I ever drank. Their tea leaf salad is unique and would be delicious if it was not way too greasy. The same with their keema prata, the taste was spot on and prata was perfectly flaky but the grease is a turn off. My favourite is their royal noodle salad, served with udon and creamy sauce, it was very delicious and fresh. The portion was also really big and definitely worth the price. Their laksa was OK, taste was there but was it mind-​blowing? Not really.
I felt like this place could be a hidden gem place if the chef can tone down the grease and the service was faster. For the price though, it’s a good place to get your take-​out from if you live in the neighbourhood.

Wow, never knew about Burmese resto in Vancouver. I really had to come here with my sister. Service was fast. However server forgot to bring us some tea and we didn’t get it till the end. Must’ve been a busy day for him. It was great experience to try Burmese food for the first time.
We got the following 1) Roti Pratha with curry sauce, 2) Tea Leaf Salad known as Laphet Thoke and 3) Mee Goreng. Roti Pratha was very delicious. 1) Roti came as fresh with curry and we couldn’t stop eating it. It was soft and flaky. 2) Laphet Thoke had this herby taste with crunchy texture which I liked. Taste reminded me of Basil Pesto and I don’t know why. So excited to eat this and tasted bit salty in the end. 3) Mee Goreng was good at first. It was spicy and ended up quite salty. The beef inside the dish was dry. I liked the taste though.
I felt little disappointed from high expectation and don’t mind coming back to try other dishes. If you can’t handle heat, don’t order Mee Goreng. Roti Pratha is amazing. I had to say the salad and Mee Goreng made me feel so thirsty. I’d give 3.5 stars.

Oh so yummy!!! If you want tasty comfort food, come here. The other well known place has supposedly «more healthier“options (I think the other place just list/​advertise better) but honestly if you look at ingredients (i.e .carbs) the total calories of the dishes are probably the same. So one might as we’ll enjoy the fuller flavors offered here. This place definitely hits the spot with their food and the prices are definitely of great value allowing you to try many more dishes. I have a picky 4 year old and even he didn’t mind it. We found something for all of us.
We had the fermented tea leaf salad that was interesting as an appetizer. Good texture of soft and crunchy. Unique and tasty. The prata was also good (kid loves it). The fish noodle soup was very tasty. I was expecting a white bland broth (so my kid would eat it) but it was a yellow thickish broth with chick peas and crunchy something’s that we all enjoyed. The laksa also was very good and even had some clams in it. Portions were large to boot leaving us very full at the end of the meal. The menu is quite large so we will be coming back here again to try all the dishes.

Everything on the menu is outstanding, but the Burmese dishes really shine. My
only complaint is that the prices are too low!

This place was so good. Authentic flavors and décor, friendly/​family atmosphere and the food came out fresh, fast and was really enjoyable. Amay’s served up one of the better Laksa’s I’ve tasted — it was complex in flavor with the perfect amount of spice. The curry chicken appetizer with prata was so good — addicting actually. I think I could make a meal out of that alone. We also enjoyed the beef curry dish — the flavors in this dish were awesome as well, but one thing I noticed (and perhaps its because we came so late in the day), was that we found the meat in the beef and chicken laksa dish to be a little tough and overcooked. If the meat had been more tender, this place would definitely be 5 stars!

Absolutely delicious! The first time I had fermented tea leaves salad was in Yamo in San Francisco and I’ve been on the hunt for it ever since. It was just as good as I remembered it at Amay’s House and that was just the start.
We also tried roti with potato curry, laksa, and lamb curry. All were so so delicious. The portions were just enough. Don’t expect the food to appear like fast food.
The atmosphere is definitely one of a small family owned restaurant with lots of Burmese-​related decorations on the walls; buddhas, scenery, and portraits of Aung San Suu Kyi and others. Service was fine. Plenty of seating.
Will definitely come back when I’m craving tea salad (which will be often)!

Can you believe that there is not a single Burmese restaurant in the Seattle area? I truly cannot believe it.
My mom’s side is Burmese and I have not had Burmese food in years since moving away from home, and I’ve been missing it lately. So, I looked up some Burmese restaurants in Vancouver and thought Amay’s House looked good.
My bf and I came in for takeout. It was pretty busy. Everyone was speaking Burmese and I felt. comfortable. As if my grandma and aunt were visiting my mom for the weekend.
We ordered the prata and a noodle dish. Flavors were excellent, but I thought the curry chicken in the noodle dish was just meager and felt that they really cheapened out. The prata tasted good but the inside was not fully cooked.
I was a little disappointed, but happy that I got my Burmese food fix.

Food is okay, but bonus points for price. Everything on the menu under $ 10 so you can get a cheap meal here. AND, if you know what to order (like 2-​piece prata with chicken curry for $ 6.50), you can get a VERY cheap price for a filling meal here, especially if you go with someone to share.
The main thing about Amay’s House is to NOT base your expectations on the wording. For example, their «curries» are more like savory stews with no spicy heat at all. As for «authentic Burmese food», you’d better go with a Burmese person because many items look like they are just South East Asian rather than strictly Burmese.
The only must-​try thing is the prata, which is very similar to the fluffy-​on-​the-​inside Singapore style, but done in two ways here. The baseball sized ball-​shaped prata is particularly interesting and you can get that with chicken curry as an appetizer, or in lieu of the plain rice that comes with their curry dishes if you ask for a substitution (they didn’t charge me extra for the substitution, but that could change at any time since it is not on the menu that you can substitute).
Curry portions seem smallish (about 1 cup) but mostly meat and combined with the rice you get, is a filling portion.
Just one server and probably just one cook in the back, so if the place is busy or you have a large party, expect a bit of a wait and slower bussing. Staff are friendly and accommodating, however.

A really low key Burmese (more like SE Asian) restaurant.
Parking is available on Victoria outside of rush hour.
The place has a very cozy charm, with lime green walls all around in the dining area (blue in the kitchen area). The place seems to be a mom and pop operation. The restaurant was very quiet, which makes it a great place for having a conversation. The tables can be arranged in a long row if needed, which also makes it easier for accommodating groups.
Having never been to Myanmar (Burma) or eaten Burmese before, I can’t speak too much for the authenticity. However, the dishes did look and sound suspiciously Malaysian or Thai. I sent a photo of the menu to a friend in Singapore, who confirmed that the food wasn’t exactly Burmese. But if one is willing to overlook this fact, the quality is quite good.
The laksa I had was one of the best I’ve had in a while. Onions and bean sprouts, with lots of cilantro. The soup was spicy but not overwhelming. Noodles were good. My only wish was that the portion was a wee bit bigger, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker.
I will be back to try more of their dishes.
