Bird on a Wire Creations (BWC) is the place to buy locally handmade arts and crafts for Home Décor, gifts or a little something for that special person — you. We are a specialty consignment retail store offering a large array of high quality arts/​crafts work, a gallery, and education centre. BWC provides a pleasant facility that inspires and supports amateurs, professionals, and crafters in Vancouver’s Lower Mainland. We support the arts/​crafts community by not only selling their works of art but by also donating 10% of their net profit to the local arts community. We facilitate, organize, and offer creative workshops in a variety of techniques to satisfy the need and curiosity for the nostalgia of crafting, as well as offer locker and/​or studio rental. History

Established in 2010.

Bird on a Wire Creations is owned and operated by practising artist/​crafter Karen Unger-​Strickland who brings over 25 years experience working in both arts and crafts. As well Karen successfully owned and operated a paint-​your-​own ceramic store in Squamish, BC gaining experience in running a craft’s based store. She hosted and taught workshops in painting ceramics, painting canvas floor clothes, and creating mosaic picture/​mirror frames. It was also the satellite location for the Emily Carr College of Art, where weekly credited art classes were held.

Local home schooled children came to her Squamish store to fill the elementary arts credits for their classes. Karen was also the president of the local Arts Council. BWC will draw on all these years of experience as well as Karen’s passion for the arts and crafts industry. BWC is founded on the idea that maintaining satisfied customers is essential to the bottom line.

In 2009, as I witness the erosion of support for the arts, I make a decision to create a place to not only support the arts but to connect community through the arts. This is what I am meant to do. I am a creative catalyst and a great promoter… so let‘s see what we can all create, together!

this is one of my favourite shops on Main!
Fun and quirky locally made items!!! I like to visit every few months or so to check out what’s new… The shop is fairly large and has a lot of inventory (not like some of those annoying sparse shops with maybe 50 items all insanely marked up in price) This shop is Good for quirky hand made art presents and jewellery and has a selection of children’s items …

Main Street at it’s best! Bird on a Wire is like Etsy in real life, you’ll see new things all the time, with a huge variety of items and categories. We head here first for any gifts but I’ve also bought a locally made, very well priced, leather belt, a selection of mugs that we love and use daily.
There’s wonderful framed photography, oil paintings as well as chemical free candles, some children’s clothing, scraves, cards, dinnerware — everything is locally made and so the collection of items changes and you never know exactly what will inspire you.
Of all the gifts we give, it’s the ones purchased at Bird on a Wire that people mention time and again as items they love to use.
They have a charming news letter which they don’t over use so it’s well worth reviewing.

I found myself needing to buy a present for someone and wanted something unique– I’ve passed by this place so many times and have always been intrigued by the window displays. I wasn’t disappointed. They had a great selection of interesting, locally made goods– jewelry, scarves, mugs, baby clothes… Found a beautiful artisan bracelet for my friend and a bunch of stuff that I wanted for myself. This is a gem of place and will be my «go to» store when in need of something original.

The best place to shop for Xmas presents! I think I’ve found a gift for my Mom! This mug is dishwasher and microwave safe and is absolutely gorgeous :)
I had a lovely time visiting the sweet staff at Bird On A Wire! They are kind, helpful and sweet. Luckily I only had a few moments to stop in, so I wasn’t able to spend every single penny in my account. I know exactly where I will be buying xmas presents this year!

This store is my kind of store. All local, creative and definitely not stuff you would see on a regular basis.
I discovered this little gem while I was out for a stroll on a Saturday afternoon. I just finished a coffee and had nothing to get home for, so I decided to go in and look around.
Originally I was drawn in by the art work but I ended up looking at everything. I think I was in there for about 30 minutes. They have jewelry, bags, artwork, gifts and treats. Everything needed in a small boutique.
I ended up purchasing 6 of the RabbitRabbit cards which are hilarious! I often have a hard time finding cards for friends and family because they are too nice. Those of you who know me or have met me know that I have a terrible/​awesome sense of humor so with that comes awesome birthday cards!
You’re lucky if you’re my friend. Just saying!
If you’re in the neighborhood stop in and have a look. I plan on going back to check out the jewelry and grab some more cards. With any luck, I will have sent most of my friends and family one of the hilarious cards by then and will be ready to purchase more.
Tip: Make sure to ask the staff to see the really RUDE/​DIRTY cards behind the cash register! You won’t regret it.

I walked into this shop as I wanted shelter from the cold while waiting for the #3 on the way to my favorite record store. I’ve also been curious about this shop before, however, the operating hours never jived. I love how this shop has an array of different items, most by local designers that I’ve either seen in passing or at local craft fairs in the summer. The shop looks like the Circle Craft meets the One of a Kind show in one shop. The staff are super cheery and friendly. Store was well organized ensuring that each designer’s work was showcased and presented nicely. I wasn’t planning on buying anything, however, walked out with a cute little Scrabble pin. Everything in the store is reasonably priced and everyone looked happy shopping and browsing. There are some items that are so cute that it makes me talk in a high pitched voice of joy.

Wonderful store full of items from local artists and artisans. Huge space with lots of selection. The store highlights artists and their work so it’s like an art gallery, too. A very friendly atmosphere where staff take the time to chat. Worth visiting over and over again.

I’ve always liked things made by local artists, but found it hard to locate them or at least find stuff I want made by local artists kinda thing… then came Bird On A Wire!
Everything is locally made– beautiful, quality things! There’s jewelry, notebooks, toys, stuffed animals, décor, knick knacks, cards, soaps, prints… lots and lots! I always have to take my time looking at everything, lots to take in and admire! Every now and then they even have an artist in one of their display windows doing what they do best! I love watching them work… I’m the type to enjoy knowing how things are created, also gives it a more personal feel. The styles are so unique and different from each other… it’s really something. The staff are always friendly and creative, themselves! The pricing does range everywhere, depends on material and what it is, but always reasonable for what it’s worth. Do keep in mind these aren’t pumped out assembly line stuff… someone actually put their time and effort into each piece. It makes me appreciate the store so much more– to house and support artists with so much talent!

Bird On a Wire Creations is one of those shops where it genuinely feels good to buy something. Karen (owner) has a huge passion for art and the local community and always has such a refreshingly positive demeanor — it’s worth going in just to come out with a smile on your face.
Add to this the fact that the place is full of unique objects, is home to a knitting club, art exhibitions for local artists, musicians etc. and you have a rare and amazing ‘spot’ on Vancouver’s finest street.

The owner and collector of beautiful things, Karen, is an amazing person. Last year, while walking pass Bird on a Wire, the artfully displayed window lured me into the shop. I wasn’t planning on buying anything. But, once, inside I spotted a wonderfully handcrafted wooden box by artist Dean Mills. I asked Karen if there would be any way to get Dean to make a custom piece. After a couple of emails and phone conversations, we got the most special box made for my mother-​in-​law for a very reasonable price.
I highly recommend spending an afternoon going through all the treasures in this store. If you see something by an artist you like but want it in another color or shape, don’t be shy to ask Karen about customizing pieces.
This is a great shop to get gifts for others or yourself.
