KOMBUCHAONTAP? Count me in. A light and fresh café with a mixture of floral and fresh baked bread scents in the air. The ‘buch was crisp, carbonated, and mild. I was thankful they didn’t overly sweeten it like some kombucha you can buy at the health food stores. It was like drinking my own brew from home!

Flunky trendy coffee shop that offers some breakfast options and sandwiches. You won’t be getting the standard faire here. They offer food that is off the well beaten path. The Birds and the Beets is famous for their avocado and egg sandwich. I didn’t try it. Maybe next time I come here. I ended up ordering the seafood sandwich… I got a tuna ahi sandwich. It sounds kind of unusual but it was pretty good. The bun was an Artisan baked bread. Baked in the shop. Really good. Soft but still has a bit of substance to it. The surrounding neighbourhood is a bit sketchy but this coffee shop it a keeper. Definitely bookmark it and give it a try!

The café is absolutely gorgeous with lots of wood accents, greenery and flowers. It’s definitely a nice spot to grab a coffee with friends and they have a selection of treats for sale as well.

I’m really loving Gastown these days. Places like Birds and the Beets make me love it even more. The place is surprisingly spacious than it looks from the outside. Came in early one morning and it was not too busy, several people reading and enjoying their coffee. Fresh baked goods fill the air, and friendly faces behind the counter ready to help. I ordered a latte and a freshly baked cinnamon bun. The latte was great and cinnamon bun was delish! I love the the fresh flowers in the front, I believe you can purchase them. I sat near the front beside the window and watched cars and walkers pass while I enjoyed my morning latte, it was peerrrfect! I will return.

A friend and I love exploring coffee shops in this city and this has been on our hit list for a while Unfortunately for him I was meeting someone at the Warehouse and jumped at the chance when he suggested we go to B&B Absolutely love the store. We only had lattes/macchiatos — my friend couldn’t finish his it was so strong but SO good! When I have a chance to go back I no doubt will change my rating to a 5 based on the pictures of the food I’ve seen posted here. Also they were getting cauliflower ready to pickle and they sell their own granola in jars. And did I mention beautiful flowers for sale? And a fair amount of seating. Wish I had moved to Gastown instead of the west end at times like these! I will be back!

Love the sparkling water on tap and the mossy plant water catcher underneath. Good coffee and usually there is always some type to fresh baked treat to pick from when ever you go. The Madelines are always the right texture, light and tasty! Great space with high ceilings, plants throughout, and two door that exit on either street.

Plenty of seating and beautiful relaxing chill environment. Clean washrooms! Sandwiches are delicious. They are flavourful and full of good wholesome ingredients. Staff was friendly and we defiantly will be returning to this cute little joint! Great Lunch/brunch spot.

The good stuff: — First of all the use of the flowers and plants are quite nice and makes the place light and fresh — The almond latte I had was super delicious and perfect! My notes: –The wood décor and uncomfortable stools are fairly typical for a place like this. So although it’s a nice place to be in, it’s not necessarily comfortable. — With a name like birds and the beets you think they would have more vegan food options — They don’t have soy milk(so if you’re vegan and have a nut allergy you will have to get a tea) So it’s a lovely place but only for its coffee and décor.

Located in the heart of Gastown, I really like the coffee, the food and the design of the space. There are 2 entrances, sparkling or still water on tap & home brewed Kombucha also on tap. I don’t like the too-loud gansta-Rap /Hip Hop that creeps on when you’re least expecting it — which ruins the(pretty cool) vibe.(on several visits) I find this place inconsistent — which is understandable since they’re the new kid on the block.

Such a nice environment, with a nice back ground music, beautiful flowers to sell at the entrance, and full of light even the sun doesn’t come in! When I went there, the staff was nice and helpful(and rather cute, let’s be honest ;))! I didn’t have the chance to grab a bit, but food looked fresh & delicious! The cons? ITISNOISY, probably due to the heigh ceiling and the very little decoration(which I like). If I’ll come back? Definitely!

I’ve loved you since I first laid eyes on you on some random Instagram post I saw completely by accident. Your cute water faucets over a planter to conserve water and give the plants a drink every time someone pours. Your flowers at the front. Your fresh breads and delicious sandwiches, as well as Bows and Arrows Beans. All of these things brought me in. Your warm hearted lovely service and baked goods with hearty brew kept me here to laze the afternoon away. g

Powell Street’s latest hip new café and eatery, the amusingly named The Birds & the Beets, is undeniably stylish and creatively inspiring. Its open, and cavernous space is filled with cool, inviting flourishes. TB&TB has a simple but very appealing menu of fresh snacks, sandwiches, and salads. On this sun-soaked weekday afternoon, I perked up with a simple yet tasty turkey sandwich. It was both satisfying and comforting as the Rossdown Farms turkey was particularly good. As for the coffee, their Americano(made from Bows & Arrows beans) was suitably standard but reliably fulfilling in its espresso flavours. There’s a relaxed vibe mixed with a bustling creative energy coming from both sides of the street and the local neighbourhood surrounding the location. What’s most appealing about TB&TB is its narrow but welcoming end-to-end and door-to-door construction allowing for a nice flow and energy to the space. With clean and luminous wood finishes, the coffee shop fits nicely near the end of Gastown on Powell Street leading into the Eastside of town. An appealing and positively bright spot, The Birds & the Beets is an easy and inviting destination to spend your coffee break or any part of your day.

This is my new favourite sandwich joint in the area(well, I guess there are only a few to choose from around here — i.e. Finch’s and Meat & Bread). We came here for a late light lunch over the weekend. I tried the pork sandwich(pork short loin with pickled kohlrabi and apple slaw, parsley and curried sunflower seed spread) and the turkey sandwich(with caramelized red onions). The pork sandwich came up on top with its flavour and pork juiciness. I LOVED the crunchy pickled kohlrabi(type of cabbage, feels like daikon). For $ 9/9.50 you get a reasonable sized sandwich, average to the other places. I also ordered a side of pickles($ 3) which consisted of different types of pickled vegetables from cauliflower, cucumbers, to cabbage(kimchi). There is sparkling or distilled water taps available at the front end of the counter for self-serve. I liked that they placed a large planter with microgreens on the floor beneath the water spouts to catch any leakage, utilizing the drops to water the plants. I absolutely love what they have done with the space, really modern, hip and clean. I will definitely be coming back to try their other sandwich and brunch items along with the beers they have on tap.

Birds and the Beets Gastown is newly opened sandwich and salad café that opened at 55 Powll Street. Owners, Matthew Senecal-Junkeer and Trevor Pruegger took over the old Sea Monstr Sushi spot(across from Soft Peaks Ice Cream). We have been looking forward to this restaurant’s opening. The décor looks like something out of a Pinterest board. I love the interior design by Simcic + Uhrich — of wood, vintage floral and greens. It is a bit like a bird sanctuary. Bill Simcic has also done projects for Timbertrain Coffee Roaster and soon to open Juniper. The menu board is gorgeous! Birds & The Beets uses Bows x Arrows and Matchstick coffee beans. Their sandwiches like Turkey, Pork, Fish and Charred Veggies are available in both salad and sandwich options and served with pickled vegetables and fresh herbs. FISH11: Diced fish, celery and pickles. A refreshing light sandwich. A great lunch option albeit a little pricey. PORK9: sliced pork tenderloin and pickles. Tender and almost can pass for a turkey since it is so lean. Sparkling and still water station. What a great touch to catch spills with a garden bed. Don’t forget Birds and the Beets also has an enterance at 54 Alexander Street.

Surprisingly good. I really liked this place. You are walking down the street in the Gastown and made it to the edge and this place pops up. You enter in and there is a counter you place your order. There is a person who brings in flowers that were quite nice. They have a very green approach. When you get your water, the run off runs into a planter and waters the plants. I thought that was a great idea. Good atmosphere in this place too. The food was good. I had the Turkey sandwich and the little green salad. Both were great. My wife had the Charred Veggies sandwich and she did not really like it. She said it tasted liek black licorice. I tasted it and it did, however I hear they rotate these seasonally so I would not let that stop you from ordering this sandwich. This place is worth a try.

I saw this reviewed on the front page of Unilocal on July 17, 2015 and decided to book mark this for future reference. I’ve been meaning to come for breakfast which is still on the wish list, therefore, except an update. My stomach mission of success was the coffee run. Latte with almond milk single shot was around $ 4. Sadly the latte was horrible as it tasted like soap. They made me a fresh one and we got to the bottom of the situation which was appreciated. First time in a while where I had respect from a coffee shop like that. Only drawback is that they don’t have any sugar alternatives. Lots of seating room in the back, customer service was awesome and extremely funny. If any of the staff are reading this than thanks for laughing at my butterfly joke which made my day. Open wifi which allowed me to work on my zine. Warning that it gets extremely hot inside.

So glad that we discovered this place while we were traveling around Vancouver. It was located just a few blocks from our AirBnB in the Gastown neighborhood and the sleek design and open layout made me feel so much at home! We arrived just as breakfast was ending, but they happily served us the yogurt with granola and the avocado and slow poached egg brioche sandwich. The kitchen area is kind of an open layout, so you can watch them prepare your food or you can sit down and relax while you wait for them to call your name. We also ordered a cappuccino and an Iced Coffee. The drinks were great, the cappuccino was expertly made with just the right amount of milk, espresso, and foam. Loved it. Our food was served up pretty quickly and it was all delicious and light. The avocado toast is kind of hard to share, so plan on getting your own. After eating, we lounged out there a bit more(tons of outlets and free wifi). More than anything, I love the aesthetic appeal of Birds & the Beets. Walking by, this could easily pass for a design shop or even a florist. Instead, it’s a beautiful haven that serves eats and caffeine. What more could you want in a coffee shop?

Back for lunch. And I continue to be impressed! I had the pork sandwich which was succulent and rich. The house-made bread was like a very traditional ciabatta. Olive oil soaked into the tender crumb of the bread. The jalapeño-dijon-honey sauce and fresh/pickled greens combined to add to a great fresh lunch option. Their kombucha is fruity but with some definite pungent tang. Intriguing and refreshing. A slow sipper.

3.5 They took over the space formerly occupied by monster sushi and sharks and hammer. I’d say it comfortably seats 40 people. It’s open, clean, and it has a hipsterish vibe — exposed brick walls, wooden tables, etc. They serve coffee, boozy stuff(beer), and some nibbles. Based on what they had on their shelves, it looks like they’re using bows and arrows beans for their coffee /espresso drinks. Their cold brew wasn’t bad but I felt that it’s a tad on the lighter side. Nevertheless, it’s a nice addition to the neighborhood. I’ll be back at a later day to try out their food.
