They get a third star for the service! I have been coming to the Comox for years and I loved the unapologetic nature of the place; it was a classic bar with good bar snacks, pool, awesome servers and well priced drinks. Oh how things have changed, they recently got rid of there special discount nights they used to have but worse than that they have changed the menu for a menu that looks like it belongs in some fluffy Yaletown hotel bar. It’s all wrong and doesn’t fit the place at all and not to mention it is severely over priced. I loved this place because you knew what you were getting, now I feel like this place has lost us sense of identity and is really trying to be something it’s not. I tried the only thing on the menu that was close to a bar snack and that was the corn dogs with BLACKBERRYKETCHUP um… no super boring and the ketchup was just weird and they were over priced. The server Mary-Lynn will keep me going back BUT only for drinks, I really would not bother with the food!

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place on a Sunday evening after too many drinks at dinner and not wanting our night to end. We walked in and the décor was straight out of the 1980’s. It reminded me of Shennanigan’s on Robson. There are tv’s to watch sports and three pool tables in the back. Bonus: pool is free on Sundays! The bar is fully stocked and the staff are really friendly. My boyfriend and I had a few drinks and played a few games of pool. There was a good crowd there on a Sunday evening. It serves a good mix of locals and tourists as it is also a hotel bar. Nice little place to check out. I plan to venture back here when I’m in the West End again.

This is a place frozen in time where you have a good mix of regulars and tourists staying at the Coast Hotel. The staff is extremely friendly and genuine, there is a good selection of beer and the food is also good, regular pub fare. The décor is very dated but it is part of the charm. I always drop by whenever I am in Vancouver, and my experience never changes. They have pool tables and sports games on tvs and the music is from the 80s… Very friendly and laid back atmosphere.

Good fun cheesy bar, still living in the 90s. The band wasn’t half bad either. Nice spot to hang out. Also doubles as the hotel bar.

This is either the classiest dive I’ve ever been to, or the shabbiest lounge I’ve ever been to. I’m not sure which. The décor is straight out of the 80’s, yet somehow kept relatively pristine in quality. Half the large bar is dark and abandoned. Pretty much everyone is congregated around the long bar, surrounding tables and the two very high quality pool tables. There’s a lot of regulars who come in to play pool and watch that night’s games on TV. That said, it’s a bit of a muted vibe given it’s mostly empty and dark. There are more interesting and visible places for the young crowd to go, so mostly you get older regulars and hotel patrons from the nearby Coast Plaza. It’s next to the hotel and accessible from a staircase on Comox, well out of the way from the Denman and West End nightlifers. It’s not a destination. I will say this. It’s a great place to have a couple drinks and watch whatever games are going on TV that night. They have several TVs and the sight lines are pretty good in much of the bar. The staff are reasonably friendly for green and/or burned out bar staff. I had three drinks, chicken strips/fries and garlic bread for $ 30. Pretty good price given all that, and it wasn’t even happy hour. It was all okay, nothing offensively bad in quality. It’s definitely a decent place to go if you and some friends just want to chill out and have drinks for a while.

Get your Don Johnson vibe and mix your drinks the Miami Vice way. There is an air of staleness that the oak & bras décor with the glass tiles obligatory to the era do little to defuse; essentially, its the worst of the 80’s in one place. The immaculate pool tables, well maintained service cues, and storage containers for regulars who bring their own cues, are the draw here– that, and free pool sundays. Nothing here tastes particularly good, but it could be the décor affecting my expectations. The beer is wet and, given enough time, might get you pleasantly buzzed. They have a new bartender now…

Great location, we really loved staying in this area of town as opposed to more central downtown. It feels more local, with lots of great food and bars nearby. Just steps from English Bay and Stanley Park and sunset views over the water from the balcony. The rooms were clean, comfy, a bit outdated but nice. The staff was nice and very helpful. We’ll stay here again.

A West End GEM. It’s so nice to get out of the city, and the decade, for a few drinks and a beautifully greasy burger. The staff are friendly, the prices are good, and the neon beer signs are from 1991. PLUS20%(or is it 30?) off your liquor bill on Mondays. Comox, don’t you ever leave me baby. And if you’re ever there while the cover band BANG! is playing you’re in for a special treat.

This bar was conceived in Surrey in 1992. Shortly after, it fell into a deep sleep, was gently plucked up and nestled above Denman Place Mall, and then slowly nudged awake. Nothing has changed since then. Perhaps the Comox(or, «the C’ox» as I like to call it) resented being moved. Perhaps it’s just one of those guys who likes things the way they were. Either way, the neon bar lights are staying, and so is the disco-ball dance floor, mirrored bathroom walls, twinkling bar lights, and 40+ aged clientele. I LOVEIT. On a more serious note, the food is decent and the servers are friendly, the drinks are reasonably priced, and the location is divine. Come in the springtime and enjoy sitting amidst the cherry blossoms while watching cougars guzzle half-litres of wine and flirting with the mulleted bartender. I actually feel a little sad writing this review, in case enough people catch on and it somehow changes the place. I am keeping the Comox as my make-it-or-break-it dating location: you meet someone new, you sorta click, you’re thinking you might really be into them… so take them to the Comox. If their immediate reaction is laughter, disgust, or a vaguely bemused look, it’s over. If their eyes light up with wonder like a neon Coors Light: The Silver Bullet sign, throw back a few and ask the house band for something special… Let’s Get It On.

30% off everything on Mondays and Thursdays. Darts and pool. This is not a dive bar. It’s a dive lounge, and I love it.

Cheap drinks on this night made it worthwhile. However, the nacho’s were, well, standard pub nacho’s with barely any cheese on them. It was an interesting atmosphere. Pretty laid back, which I like. I wouldn’t be against coming here again, but I probably would eat elsewhere.

Attached to hotel — one entrance thru hotel /mall. Other outside past sign & upstairs. Has UFC fights(basic $ 5 cover). Large big screen, but no other sports are playing. We had wings with the Coast sauce which is a mix of hot n’ honey, They were good, but nothing outstanding. All and all, a pretty average place. Nothing too exciting to rave about.

We went to watch UFC128 here and actually walked out to find another place. It wasn’t entirely their fault and they were nice enough to remove the $ 5 cover charge when I asked so I will come back again. We got the wings since they were on special. The comox special sauce is a blend of honey, garlic, and heat and was pretty damn good. However, the wings had no meat so I really can’t recommend them. It is a hotel bar and not the best scene. If you got here early enough to get a comfy seat close to the one big screen TV, then the UFC viewing might be pretty good. Otherwise you are stuck with a mediocre view, dated TV technology, and a poor sound system. We were by the door and all we could here was the couple next to us blathering on about this and that and couldn’t hear the fights at all. It was giving me a headache… exit stage left.

To me the only great thing about this place is they give you 30% off the drink bill on Monday nights. Oh yes and it was in the hotel lobby.

***NOTE: a star rating would be meaningless for this place. I gave it 3 stars as a compromise.*** I was invited to a Thursday night at the Comox by a friend of mine who(along with her parents) has been coming here every Thursday for the last 15 years — which I guess is nearly half her life. Some of the waitresses have been working here that whole time and they knew my friend by name. The Comox looks like it was put up in 1987, then shaken vigorously, then freeze-dried and re-opened. The sign outside looks like the logo from the Miami Vice TV show. The interior looks like an Atlantic City casino circa 1985. Everything is in aquamarine or pink, with those big fuzzy glass block walls everywhere. There’s a dancefloor with a wall with mirrored tiles and I’m told they have live bands from time to time. There are 3 pool tables that look fairly new, and on a busy Thursday night, only one was being used the whole night. Also, there is a dart board. They had the hockey game on a variety of TVs and projected on a big screen as well(Canucks lost). As other reviewers have mentioned, Mondays and Thursdays are 30% off everything. As in the whole bill. For $ 22(incl tax and tip) I got a pitcher of Okanagan Spring Lager and a plate of penne bolognese with extra sausage, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. There’s actually a pretty big menu with standard pub food(wings, burgers, nachos, etc.), but you don’t come here for the food. You come for ridiculously friendly staff, accidental/on purpose 80s retro style, and 30% off.

By far one of my favorite hang outs. Pool tables, darts, UFC, good food, excellent staff, decent prices on both drinks and food, great place to get comfy for the night and have a blast with friends. ‘Create your own’ pasta dish and pizza’s are always fun — you pick the toppings for the pizza, as well as the pasta along with the noodles and the sauce. Some great dishes have been created there! Also great nachos and burgers — even the veggie burger is good. The staff is so personable and friendly, great service. Thursday nights are 30% off your ENTIRE bill, which is such a rare treat. Great place for hockey games and UFC, there is a big screen TV with a couple comfortable couches and tables as well as plenty of chairs and tables. I almost want to keep this place a secret… but yeah, its great! :)

Good local place to go for weekend live music, shoot pool, watch sporting events. Since it is part of the hotel it doesn’t have a cool bar/lounge vibe going on… a little sterile. However the staff is fantastic and the food is very, very good for the prices. They even have a couple nights a week when they take 30% off your bill… even your alcohol portion.
