Dr. Johann van Eeden

I have been seeing Dr Vaneeden for over 10 years. He is a great doctor who has always done the best possible for me. He explains things clearly and never seems rushed. He truly cares and it’s easy to tell he loves his job. He’s helped me with numerous medical concerns over the years and I really appreciate his expertise and empathy. His staff are very friendly and always on point.

Excellent doctor! Has always listened to my concerns and issues. Extremely helpful and willing to take the time to explain things without talking down. Would not hesitate to recommend him to a friend.

I’ve been seeing Dr. van Eeden since about 2007. I think he’s a very good doctor with a few areas of improvement. He is very knowledgeable, but only focuses on Western medicine, and sometimes I would like a more holistic approach (like trying acupuncture for pain or checking whether my diet or sleep is affecting my health). When I’m there he doesn’t rush me, and is willing to address more than one ailment if it’s not major. I think he’s personable and he listens to what I say, and answers all my questions until I’m satisfied. Sometimes I have a tough time understanding him, partly because of his accent and partly because he may not explain things in the clearest way (using layman’s terms). I felt that he did wait too long to refer me to a specialist for one issue I had, but for another one he was very quick. The receptionists are wonderful, although, yes, they are hard to get on the phone, but they have always called me back. I like that Dr. van Eeden trains medical students and I feel that he is involved in the medical community. Overall I’ve been happy with his service, aside from the one time that I thought he could have acted faster to alleviate my pain by sending me to a specialist sooner.

I think, after seven years of observation, that Dr. van E wants to have as many patients as he possible can and he charges for every little thing he’s allowed to.
Really one of the worst offices I can imagine. He has made so many mistakes with my partner’s care than I’m disgusted with him. He is always days (or weeks!) behind responding to blood test results, dislikes referring patients to specialists and is unbelievably slow at making the appointments with specialists, (we have to call to ask or we would never, it seems, get the appointments).
If he’s competent with some people, that’s great, but I’m reviewing after 7 years of his indifference.
Try getting an appointment with him, reaching a receptionist by phone (always the machine) or getting a timely response and see if you fare better than we do.
We find him congenial and close to home, and my partnet won’t switch, but I’d like to warn others what to expect.

Dr. Johann van Eeden is a wonderful physician. Caring, great with diabetes and really knowledgeable. He’s not accepting new patients right now but when he opens up his practice — get in. Vital Health in Kits has three docs accepting if you need someone good.

It may be kind of pointless to review Dr. van Eeden right now, since his practice is currently no longer accepting new patients. But, for future reference, let me say: The man’s a fantastic GP. Knowledgeable, attentive, open-​minded (he’s been listed as the top LGBT-​friendly physician in Vancouver on several occasions), genuinely concerned about his patients and, not least, also genuinely interested in his patients’ concerns. His office may not be much to look at and the man himself can be quite an imposing figure when you meet him for the first time (he’s the kind of buff you only get to be through regular bodybuilding), but he and his staff always make you feel welcome and well cared for. In a city like Vancouver, where good physicians have unfortunately become a scarce commodity, having someone like him as your doctor is literally invaluable. If you’re new in town or looking for a new GP for any other reason, just check if he’s once again accepting new patients at the time. It’s worth it.
