This review only pertains to the Healthy Heart Program and the Exercise Room downstairs. Was referred to this program and the Healthy Heart exercise room shares space with the Spin Cycles. The program is overseen by a coordinator and exercise trainer. The trainers are all very good and keep a close tab on your progress and answer any questions regarding your form or the exercise. If you miss the class at the Healthy Heart Room, the trainers are usually really good at letting you in the Exercise Room downstairs. The Exercise Room is very well organized and the machines all works well. Its not too overcrowded and the weight circuit machines are easy to use and get around. It is very clean and the patrons do take the time to wipe down the machines.

Lots of programs — check out their web site for more information. This review is for the Little Friends program, a 40-minute class for 1 – 2 year olds on Thursday mornings. Cammie leads the class, and it’s a perfect introduction to a structured environment, tailored to the readiness of toddlers. First is 25 minutes of supervised open play(parents/caregivers stay with the children), then a few minutes at a supervised, structured art project at the art table(e.g. painting, or gluing leaves on a tree-shaped paper — n.b. this age group needs a lot of help with gluing). After art, everyone washes hands and heads to the circle area for bubbles(way to motivate toddlers to assemble somewhere!) and circle time with a very very short story, then some puppet-singing games, and ring-around-the-rosie and good-bye. The child I bring is just 15 months old, and he enjoys watching the other children, as well as playing with the toys & equipment. He obviously needs active management in his interactions due to his age, but he seems to benefit from the opportunity to play with other toddlers, and he’s certainly tired out for his nap after a morning at Little Friends. October Challenge 4⁄31.

Located on Dunbar Street between 31st and 32nd Ave. at the east side of Memorial West Park, this community centre is a hot spot for Dunbar moms, who drop off their kids in daycare then hit the fitness centre for a workout, or maybe take a pottery or dance class. It’s an active and busy centre offering a wide variety of facilities to local residents of all shapes and sizes, including a playground, gym, youth lounge, squash and tennis courts, art and dance studios, a seniors’ centre, sauna and whirlpool, and a coffee shop. All facilities are adapted, where possible, for those with special needs, and there’s an elevator in the building. Many different programs are offered for all ages, contact the centre for details.
