Galaxy Bakery

Bought some pastries today thinking they look yummy. Not so! No flavor, no sugar, just spongy air and fake whip cream. I tried walnut, almond, and coffee flavor. The nice looking pastries facing the front of the shop look sort of western in style. Avoid these as they will disappoint you.

If you’re looking for the basic asian buns and cake/​pudding slices, this is one place to hit up. It’s located in a super convenient area. Fraser street, surrounded by restaurants, grocery stores and banks. Great for families to sneak by and grab some on the way home. They also sell their day olds for a decent price. I think $ 2+/ 3.75, i think for a bag of ⁵⁄₆ buns? Not too shabby.
However if you were looking for a larger variety/​hot fixes etc, New Town Bakery in Chinatown would probably be your next best visit. :)

With a name like Galaxy Bakery you would expect it to be out of this world and although they had some pastries that peaked my interest, I wouldn’t go as far as say their out of this world… the basics are covered. It does serve the purpose for what it is, therefore, it’s still a treasure in it’s own right.

Just a really small bakery that shares with a retail side which sells products like soya sauce, condensed milk, & some other stuff that I can’t remember as I walk by; shows you that it’s probably a sublet.
Nevertheless, it’s fairly basic, doesn’t have the glamour of the other Chinese bakeries like Anna’s, with fancy dancy mouse cakes, etc. but has the basics like egg tarts, coconut buns.
It’s been in business for quite some time, so guess they’re doing ok w/​a decent customer base.
but i wouldn’t buy stuff here w/​my girlfriend, maybe for an ex lol

This place seems to always leave their doors open so you could seem all the lovely pastries they are baking fresh inside. What a bait indeed, I was curious one day and wanted to try out this bakery cause I pass by this place quite often and the are pretty busy at time.
They seem to bake most of the day rotating their bake goods quite frequently. So I end up getting a few of the freshest stuff they got on hand. My spoils: egg tart, curry beef bun, coconut bun, and a flaky red bean pastry. The price on each pastry was about $.80 no tax! Oh I love no tax and odd penny change.
MMMMMMmmmmmm Fresh pastry so large, glossy and plump! Yah, quite deceiving. The filled buns were big, but the filling was not and had a large air pocket that arose inside. The curry filling was very good, but it was all air and bun, same issue with the coconut bun. I did like the red bean pastry and thought that was the best thing I had in the batch. The egg tart… yeah, not satisfying.
Very hopefully place when I walked in smelling the fresh baked good in the air, but that hyped it up a lot more that it actually was. Price is decent for what you get cause at the end of the day, $ 4.20 fed 2 people quite well.

Granted, Claudia has a definite advantage pulling on her expertly trained tastebuds (
), her ability to flash the «Honger peace sign» (
), and family connections to a set of foodie aunties. But I still put up my feeble attempt just in case I stumble onto something by accident.
The tart popped out of its metal tin easily, and was kind of a cross between the flaky type and cookie type — not doing either style justice. The custard was also not as rich as you might expect.
My thought for today, «Every failure is a step closer to success, right?»
and I WON’T make the bad pun about finding the perfect egg tart in a «Galaxy» far far away.
