Hong Kong style café. I usually go to Maxim’s when looking for this type of restaurant but it is small and lineups are boring. Baked Pork Chop is good, today I tried the beef & vegetable chowmein with black bean sauce, it was good for this type of time capsule restaurant.

This is a fairly large café for Chinatown. There are small booths to larges tables for 10. The food here is cheap, it’s okay. Service is always polite. I will often go there in the early morning to pick up a half dozen of buns for $ 5. The bathrooms need improvement /renos. I like that the waitresses are dressed in uniforms. Too many places allow the wait staff to dress however they want. This is far from an upscale diner, but the food is solid for what you’re paying.

When I need my fix of Hong Kong style cha chan teng, I come here. The food and ambience is a throwback. Service is quick and food is no nonsense. They have good value lunch specials and freshly baked goods. My favorite is the baked pork chop on rice and hot milk tea. Not quite as good as Café de Coral and Tsui Wah in HK, but good enough for a fix.

Came here couple of times. They used to have free parking if you eat in but now with all the building being built. its a no. So they have breakfast special. The A(the egg, ham or saugae with bun dish) +B(noodle dish or soup dish) with coffee or tea kind. If you know what I mean. There buns are not bad. This place is always busy and I do enjoy coming here. But parking is brutal. Staff are a bit of a rush. I always order their breakfast special. The sausage, egg and bun. Its not bad but i think the portion got smaller. So i also get the B part with it which is the macronni and ham(small pieces) in soup. Not bad. But I prefer The Boss just up the street. In the past I could eat the A and my sister can have the B but now. I have to have both A and B for myself in order to fill me up.

The best BBQ pork bun in town! It had a thin layer of crispiness on top and really soft on the inside. Pork flavor was on point! $ 1.25/per bun They also have combo deals for breakfast, two eggs, ham, coffee for $ 2.50

Goldstone is a Hong Kong style café and bakery located in Chinatown Vancovuer. I was shopping in Chinatown to pick up a few things before heading back to Seattle and was looking for a place to grab lunch at the same time. I usually go to Hon’s, but decided to give Goldstone a try this time based on a couple of reviews I read from a couple Unilocal friends. Upon entering the restaurant, you will find the bakery in the front. I didn’t get any baked goods here, but they have your usual assortment of Chinese bakery items like buns and egg tarts. Though not as extensive as other Chinese bakeries nearby. The restaurant interior here looks a bit old, but it does not deter its patrons as the restaurant was quite full when I visited. Like previous HK cafes I have been too, the menu here is very large. I did also notice on the regular menu that the pricing is a bit higher here as most entrée items have double digit pricing. Fortunately they do have a good specials menu that is great for lunch here. Tried the baked pork chop with rice special($ 8.25) which comes with a drink. I got the milk tea which tasted as expected. Warm and delightful. The pork chop rice was okay. Not the best version I have had of this dish, but the pork chops were decent. Right amount of moistness. I do prefer more of a crispy texture, but I don’t think you can get that as the pork chops are covered in sauce. And while I know it is standard, I think the frozen vegetables added in cheapens the dish. Service here was typical of the HK café dining experience which is to say quick and efficient. Overall, I thought Goldstone met my expectations. The meal I had here was alright. If I was looking to eat at a HK café in Chinatown Vancouver, I would come here again.

This HK style Café has a special place in my heart :) Basically, great food, affordable prices. That’s the deal in HK cafes. I ordered things not on the menu. Because I can speak Chinese –_– I got a Chicken Fried rice, and a Chicken noodle soup. In less than five minutes, the food came to my table. The fried rice here, is the classic HK fried rice. The noodle soup was delicious. Flavouriful, and filling. They didn’t skimp on the meat, it was a nice ratio of meat to noodles. Defiantly one in my books (EDIT) The Beef Brisket Curry and the Egg Tarts are to DIEFOR!

Another decades long customer of this HK-style diner. It’s run by the same family that ran it when I was a kid. The menus, with minor price differences, are the same as 20 years ago. The wok flavour imparted onto the dishes is perfect. Lunch specials run about $ 8 – 9 and you get a personal sized standard dish(e.g. baked pork chop on fried rice, black pepper steak on rice), good soup(e.g. a spicy version of «borscht»), and a buttery bun. You can upgrade your regular bun to a bakery bun for a few cents.

I have only recently re-discovered Goldstone Bakery. I used to come here with my family a lot as a child, but as I grew up, it’s been many years since I’v visited. But now that I’ve been back, I can’t go without a regular dose of Goldstone. The interior looks the same as when I came in as a kid and could use a bit of a face lift, but the food is just as good as I remember. Their baked pork chop on rice is my favourite dish. Great balance in their tomato sauce and plenty of pork chop! The chops are fried to the perfect amount of crispiness. Then there’s the egg tarts. Their egg tarts here are hands down the best I’ve ever had. When they come out fresh from the oven, they basically melt in your mouth. The fluffy pastry that encompasses this eggy goodness is light and flaky. I’d definitely recommend checking this place out.

Food is so so, however, very cheap. They are cash only. Decent amount of seating. Ambiance is questionable. Customer service is good. I came for the soups and a sandwich just to fill the tummy from point A — B.

GREAT egg tarts. This place just screams 1980’s given the amount of lard they must’ve used to make the crust so flaky, but you know what? Totally worth it… It’s just so saddening that they run out of the tarts so early in the day though and don’t replenish it! The pineapple buns looked fantastic though so I’ll have to make a return visit to check those out. There seems to be an always busy restaurant component next door too! [Edit] Can now verify that their pineapple buns are to die for too! They’ve just the right amount of sugar on the top to make it not only flaky but a bit crispy too! The bun was surprisingly not oily either!

Bought the pineapple custard bun and walnut cake slice for for a total of CDN$ 2.15! Taste very good. Attached next door is a restaurant which seem very popular. If you buy from the counter, then you aren’t allowed into the restaurant to sit. It is strictly takeaway.

Solid 3.75 stars, especially for being consistent after all these years. Their baked pork cutlet and its ketchup sauce: way better than Deer gardens last week, there it was way too much starch, sauce literally congaluated within minutes lol.

* Classic * With the numerous options for Chinese food all around the Metro Vancouver area, including areas like Richmond with all of the recent immigration, I have to confess that I frequently overlook the old Chinatown area of Vancouver when thinking of places to eat. Goldstone is a classic old-school HK Café, and I’m disappointed that I hadn’t stopped in before. Granted it feels like going through a bit of a time warp — everything from the faded menus under the glass top of the table to the waitstaff uniforms. But somehow the time warp matches really well with the classic comfort food on offer. I ordered my classic HK Café order of baked pork chop on rice($ 8.25), and took the option to add borscht($ 2) and a cold milk tea($ 1 add-on for the ice — hot is included). Yes, they do the classic HK Café thing of charging for ice on the included coffee or tea. I’ll never fully understand that other than«classic tradition.» The cold milk tea was first to arrive( ), and it was a nice strong classic flavour. It wasn’t sweet at all(the way I like it), but they had sugar available if you want it. Good start! Next came the borscht. This was overflowing the veggies and had the classic HK style flavours — slightly sweet and very tomatoey( ). It came with a complimentary roll that was SOOOO fresh( ). A bonus of them operating a bakery on-site, and based upon the freshness of the roll I made a mental note to come back for Chinese baked goods in the future. Then the main course arrived — the pork chop rice. It was huge. Particularly considering it was lunch time and it was the lunch special. The rice was slightly stir-fried with bits of scrambled eggs. I like it normally with a bit more wok hei, but it was good. The pork chops were surprisingly tender. Lots of times in this dish the chops are tough or chewy and sometimes even overcooked. Not here. Nicely cooked, and tender. The sauce was a very classic simple tomato sauce. Overall a very simple but well executed version of this classic comfort dish. Photo: Overall sometimes the classics are just the comforting treat you need! I’ll be back!

I lovesssssssssss! Many things are great here. Whenever I come here its always an action packed meal for me. For those of you that don’t know… This is an HK Style Diner. So its mostly asian with a little bit of western influence, thanks to the British & the Portuguese, because after all, thats really what HK consists of. Breakfast is served all day even though it says only til 11am. I always get Breakfast set B, which comes with 2 eggs your way, your choice of luncheon meat, weiner or ham. It says bacon, but they almost never have it. It also comes with a regular bun with butter, and a macaroni soup. I always get beef with preserved vegetable for my macaroni. There are other choices too, but I forget. You also get a choice of coffee or tea. HK Coffee over the Starbucks type they serve for sure. Dip the bun in the coffee. The Egg Tarts are the best here. Nice and flakey, and super yellow. I always order some togo. They hold up real nice for eating later! Also, the chicken chow mein is the best i’ve had. Crispy noodles, perfect gravy, and the chicken is so soft & sliced thin so perfectly. Love this place.

This place hasn’t changed in over 20 years. They have the best HK style spaghetti, baked pork and rice, borsht and fresh dinner roll in Vancouver! I am definitely going back again soon, and not wait another 20 years :)

A friend phoned me early this morning and asked to use my parking pass. He wanted to check out the Home Show at BC Place, but he didn’t want to pay the ridiculous downtown parking prices. I said sure. We ended up grabbing a quick breakfast at Footo and than he went to the home show. I ended up dusting off my road bike and I wisely took advantage of the awesome sunshine and spent the morning/afternoon riding down to Burnaby and coming back and riding around downtown for a few hours. Anyways to make a long story shorter after finishing the Home Show my friend took me out to Goldstone Bakery for a afternoon snack. We got there around 3 pm and we were seated immediately. Not too busy at this time of day I guess. First off I like the environment of this bakery/restaurant. It has a 50s or 60s look to it. The booths are old but super comfy. I just sat back and sunk right into the seat to put myself in a relaxed mood. Service was efficient and friendly. Our server was a young pretty girl. I kept joking to my friend that I was going to turn her into my Pygmalion Project! Haha. Anyways more to the point I ordered a Hong Kong coffee, a egg tart and a bbq pork bun. These are standard HK coffee shop staples. I’m old fashion I guess… I go with the tried and true when going to a new restaurant. The food was hot and pretty darn fresh and delish! Ok the only thing that stops me from giving Goldstone a 5 star rating is the washroom! I don’t want to gross out my very few readers so suffice to say if you don’t really really need to go don’t go to the washrooms! I’m an optimist so I’ll end this review on a positive note! I’ll be coming back to Goldstone Bakery and Restaurant very soon to enjoy their delectable baked delights!

Goldstone is an institution in the heart of Chinatown. I remember eating here as a kid in the 1980s, before(the first) Aberdeen Centre in Richmond even existed. The only 2 other places I can think of that is worthy of this title is The Boss, and Kam Gok Yuen. Some could argue New Town Bakery should also make the list, but technically they’ve moved locations. I digress. Parking is available in the pay lot(gasp) beside the building. However, the ticket fee is refunded with a $ 10 purchase. Phew. This place is literally a time warp. The interior has pretty much remained unchanged since the 1980s, including that trademark giant clock on the back wall. Even the illuminated photos of the food are completely faded from decades of use. The food is no frills comfort HK café style. They have toast, rice, noodles, wonton soup, you name it. One thing I always get a kick out of is the typos on the menu — for example, D2 is a «Satan steak with spaghetti». Guess it must be devilish good. The staff are casual, and much less rude than other HK cafes around town. The portion sizes are pretty awesome. The flavouring in the food isn’t the most exquisite, but it’ll fill you up. For example, the spaghetti sauce tastes like something straight out of a can. Delicious. Special mention goes to their curry dishes. It’s up there with Mui Garden. There’s also an old school bakery in front for your bun goodness, but I didn’t pick any up when i went. Can’t really go wrong with this place.

Goldstone is an HK café in Chinatown that’s been around for ages. Like everyone else, I recommend the baked pork chop on rice. It really is the best in town! I’ve also tried their sauteed beef on spaghetti and it was also really good. They have a ton of lunch specials which includes a drink for around $ 7 – 8. The food came quick and overall, everything was as expected. A great place for a quick HK café fix in Chinatown!
