Manila BBQ Grocery

The only REAL reason why you would want to trek to this grocery store out of a countless other Filipino and Filipino-​Chinese style grocery stores in the Vancouver area is for three things:
1. Filipino-​style Lechon de Leche (a whole roasted pig for CAD185.00)
2. Fried Pork skin complete with fatty parts — CAD4.99
3. Fried Chicken skin — CAD4.99
The rest of the items for sale are similar — sardines in a bottle, cup noodle soup, Filipino condiments, dried fish and fruit snacks, etc.
But go passed those usual and just head straight to the cashier to ask for a bag of fried pork skin and another bag of chicken skin. And when I say a bag, I mean a Ziploc bag. You can’t get any more fancier than that. What do you want to do with them? Well, if you’re not adventurous enough to snack it as is dipped in vinegar (white, malt, or fermented with spices) then go ahead and generously dump on salad, pasta or even rice.
When you decide to have a feast, order the Lechon de Leche which requires a week in advance to order. They will roast a whole pig for you the Filipino way. Which means not your typical blistered skin from deep frying, but a slow and painstaking cooking over charcoal fire. The result is that you are jaw-​dropped in the presence of a shiny reddish-​brown pig with a thin but c-​c-​c-​c-​crunchy texture skin to munch on and then peeled to reveal tender, soft meat. What’s the dipping sauce? Why I’m glad you asked (or didn’t ask) for it’s a sweet and spicy liver sauce. Yup. No squirming here. You’re a foodie, aren’t you.
When you order that whole pig, make sure you have a dozen guests to come over and enjoy over beer.
Any of the above three are cholesterol-​drenched you can feel your heart stopping. When you announce this kind of feast, be prepared for a full-​packed place for once they’ve tried this variety of roasting pig, they know exactly what they’re getting. But when every invited guest has shown up and the doorbell rings once more, I wouldn’t advise answering it anymore. Check the pig and check how much you ate, it may be Joe Black this time… :X
