I came here to get Silver Hills Gluten free bread on sale. Even if it expires on that day I just freeze the loafs and they’re good to go. Instead of paying $ 6 — $ 7 for GF bread I pop in here at least once every 3 days to see if they’re any GF loaves in stock. I come here and the other location on the hunt for my GF bread.

Went to McGavin’s today, as it is joined to Beefway meats where I went for some quality soup bones(hubby has a nasty cold) and cat food(to maintain my sanity by soothing the canned food addled cat). They had no Silver Hills bread(had lots last time) and last time they told me to keep it frozen and toast it to use it or it would go moldy. It did, as soon as we put it to thaw, thinking they might have been exaggerating. The price was right, but I frown on moldy/borderline bread now that I am not a student far below the poverty line. Still, Silver Hills toast is mighty good and at $ 1 per loaf nothing to sneeze at if you have space in the freezer(I don’t). They had some great Organic Mestemacher hard rye bread though, with expiry dates of May 2011, for half of what I’ve seen a 500 g loaf priced elsewhere. Also, it was made without whey powder, that is to say dairy free! I did a little dance and picked up 6 loaves mixing between plain, sunflower seed, and multigrain. There was a bulk discount for six loaves, I think $ 0.50 to $ 1 off per loaf. This is the type of rye bread with soaked whole kernels of grain, but not pumpernickel which is very dark brown inside from molasses and cocoa although they have a similar and slightly finer texture.(Small square pumpernickel was also available). This is the sour north/east/central European open faced sandwich style of rye that I thought was impossible to buy now that he is incredibly sensitive to lactose or casein or any dairy product in general.(No the tablets don’t work. Yes, he gets the runs for hours after any trace of dairy, and is crabby). Yay, now I don’t need to pay $ 8/lb for rye bread and pout whenever I see a loaf of Dimpfelmeier at every deli counter around. McGavins also has great deals on Rittersport chocolate, Voortmans cookies including the flax ones, and all kinds of normal and indian breads that I don’t buy because they are soft and fluffy and i don’t like them. A great place to go to get tons of bread for stuffing and bread pudding. I think the bread is often a tiny bit on the stale side, but that is how it gets in my bread box anyhow, so not a big deal — this whole store is day-old priced. Only preservative free and non-soured Silver Hhills can’t hack it.

Just a quick note — This chain sells bread that other stores overstock, and Im pretty sure they bake some fresh in the back. There’s not much special about this place other than just how cheap the overstock is(5 loafs for $ 5), and its the same stuff you can get at any supermarket. So its a penny pincher place, but not much more. I like the cashiers who work here too, they have personality and like to chat on slow days. An important tip: they dont carry plastic bags anymore! Bring your own, or try to find a way to stuff 5 loaves of $ 1 bread down your shirt. Good luck, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.
