Pink Peppercorn

Staff is extremely friendly and the service was very good. The décor and music in the restaurant almost transports you back to the 80’s, I just kept thinking of the cliché seafood restaurant I always see in 80’s comedy films or something, almost to the point I was expecting to see John Candy at the next table making a scene. As for the food it started off promising with the lobster bisque and some decent bread, but then after that it was somewhat down hill. I ordered the tenderloin with a skewer or prawns on the side, now I don’t want to say the food was bad it wasn’t, it was just extremely average. Despite the décor the prices suggested it was a higher end restaurant where they go for quality over quantity, but my steak came out on a plate loaded with veggies and mashed potatoes drowned in sauces as if they pride themselves more on value over taste. Anyway I might go back and give it another go given they’re a seafood restaurant and not a steakhouse, but my first impression wasn’t great.

My girlfriend and I waffled about writing this review. The first thing she said when we left the restaurant was, «Don’t write a review!» She knows me oh so well. We discussed it and decided to leave it. After eating leftovers the next day, she said to definitely write it. I still didn’t. Then we discussed it later again… and now here’s the review.
I’ll start off by saying that all the staff members we dealt with were extremely friendly. I’m tempted to give them 4 or 5 stars just from the service alone. What I didn’t like was that everything was about the Cannery. I have never been to the Cannery so have nothing to compare it to. It’s just how everything was introduced as «Have you been to the Cannery?» «This dish was one of the most popular at The Cannery» etc etc. Sounds very nostalgic which is great for people who frequented The Cannery and have sweet memories of the place, but a bit awkward for someone who’s never been and didn’t come here because of where the chef and staff worked previous to this establishment.
Onto the food:
— The oysters were delicious. They were Stellarbays which tasted just like Kusshis but just bigger in size. What I didn’t like about the oysters was that every piece of mine had shell in it and also a lot of the nectar had been drained. The abductor muscle also wasn’t sliced in 5 of my oysters.
— The lobster bisque was delicious. Honestly wouldn’t bother putting in some baby shrimp in it. I feel like people who love bisque know that it’s just lovely without any additions (unless you’re going to add lobster pieces to it).
— The lobster oil was reminiscent of what I’ve had at another establishment downtown but not as good.
— The blackened catfish was a total flop. The seasoning was overpowering and the fish wasn’t great. I’ve had a lot of catfish (mostly in the US, and one of my favorites in the Kootenays) and this was on the bottom of my list. As for the vegetables, my mashed potatoes were so salty that I couldn’t stomach it. It was so over salted. On a scale of 1 to 10 on the salty scale (0 being no salt), we were talking a 10. I’m not kidding. It was most likely too salty even for a Scotsman.
The last straw (which made my girlfriend tell me to write this review) was our leftovers. They had put in all the throw aways in the leftover container. All the shrimp tails and carrot tops were in there mixed with the food.
I feel badly about writing this review. It had so much potential and the recent reviews were overwhelmingly 4 – 5 star ones. At first I wrongly believed it was the price point that made the reviews so generous. But the bill we received was roughly the same as at high end seafood restaurants downtown. So if we’re going to pay around the same price range, I’d rather eat somewhere that has perfectly seasoned food without the constant reminder that it’s like it was at The Cannery.

The restaurant is too quiet and a little bit dark. But the food tastes super good. There’s giant broccoli for each main course. The sauce on the side is unique and yummy. It’s a good choice for dining out.

Boyfriend and I were visiting from Cali, and we hadn’t packed any dressy clothes so I was looking around for a casual restaurant where I could take him for a decent steak for his birthday. Came across this place on Unilocal and could not be happier!
Service was amazing, from the host to the server and even chef Eddy himself came out to chat with us. Bread with the lobster oil was different but tasty, calamari was lightly battered and great as well. I don’t remember the exact names of the dishes but I had the scallops and prawns, and BF had the blackened Cajun catfish, both of which were amazingly delicious and pretty generously portioned.
The food was great, but what I really loved about this place was the service, everyone was just so on point and welcoming. 5 stars all around, hands down our best dining experience in Vancouver!

Took my Brother out for his Birthday. Great Seafood and the Lobster reduction with the bread is fantastic. It’s as good as Seafood gets.

Unassuming in appearance if you were to drive by and quite frankly if you walked in the door, you might judge this book you its cover. Well worth a visit despite the décor and unusual location. Service was unparalleled, lot of attention and good amount of hovering, water glass filling and so on. Excellent seafood, with fresh dishes and catches of the day, very large portions so good value for money. We had the lobster bisque and seafood tartare to start, bisque was delish, tartare had a too many onions that overwhelmed the fish — this dish also needed some crispy bits for the tartare to be served on. Mains were the halibut and salmon Wellington, again both massive potions we ended up taking home. Dessert was mango sorbet and crème brûlée, both decent in taste and again, large portions. Two people, no alcohol, $ 150 with tip for three courses. Highly recommend.

Superb as it was at the Cannery, Great food and great service.
Everything is good, whatever you order.

Quaint little place but HUGE on flavor and quality. Food is fresh and well prepared. Head Chef came out to greet my family and I. Really friendly staff and the food is the best.

Decided to finally try this restaurant after hearing many reviews from friends. My husband and I use to go to the Cannery for our anniversaries but not since they closed down 6 years ago. This restaurant is very close to my house but we have never tried it. We came here for our 9^th anniversary and was greeted immediately. It was a Thursday night and not busy at all. There were about 4 tables of people so it was pretty slow. You can bring your own wine for a $ 25 corkage fee. We ordered the calamari for our appetizer and it was good. I ordered the Alaskan black cod and my husband ordered the Blackened Catfish. The sauce in the black cod dish was a little too lemony/​tart and the cod was not as tender as I remember. But the flavour was still good. Both portions were huge. I think it’s about double the size of the Cannery portions. Prices are about the same as Cannery but the restaurant is pretty ghetto and nothing like the old Cannery. No view and décor not updated. Our server was very nice and service was excellent. He took pictures of us throughout the night and put a lot of effort to make this anniversary very special. We also got free dessert which was very nice. Food is good but portions are a bit too large. Next time I won’t need to order an appetizer. The service was top notch and I would come back for that reason.

I was looking for a good seafood restaurant that served bouillabase (for my brother’s annual «bouillabirthday») and this resto came up near the top of the list. I wanted“more substance than style” so I stayed away from the posh downtown restaurants. And boy was I glad! Our waiter, Jeff, was very friendly and helpful and answered our questions about the various menu fares. The menu is full of classic items from their ‘Cannery’ days and new dishes as well. My Mom is not a heavy eater but loves shellfish so he suggested the seafood platter from the Appy menu for her. She enjoyed the shelled crab claws, mussels, grilled shrimps and clams with tangy and sweet dipping sauces. My seared tuna was slightly overdone so it was a bit dry but the lemon butter sauce was delightfully creamy smooth and had a bit of zing. We also started with the calamari which was lightly breaded and deep fried to perfection. My brother’s West Coast Bouillabase was different from the traditional Marseilles. It was a hearty red spicy broth with plenty of perfectly cooked shellfish and fish. He was also given plenty of bread to sop up the broth! This resto definitely deserves its stars.

Came here for dinner one Monday night. Ordered the steamed mussels with clams and chorizo to start and the salmon wellington as a main. Both dishes were shared between two people. First, let me say that $ 18 for an appetizer and $ 33 for an entrée seem quite pricey for east van standards, but the portions were huge! I actually had to pack half of the salmon wellington home since we were both so stuffed from the appetizer alone. Food was delicious, portions extremely generous and service was excellent. Highly recommend.

This place is a hidden gem. They prepare everything perfectly. The seafood is always fresh and delicious.
The chef and some of the wait staff are from the Cannery restaurant. Thank goodness that the Salmon Wellington recipe is the same as it was at the Cannery!

I came here with a group of friends who raved about how great the seafood was. Apparently the chef at the Cannery opened this restaurant after the Cannery was shut down. The restaurant is located a block south of Kingsway and Knight, not particularly a «fancy» location for a seafood restaurant. The outside was also pretty unimpressive and can be easily missed.
We made reservations for 6 of us on a Tuesday night. And we were glad we did. The place was packed! Every table was filled and there were also two large parties.
The décor inside was similar to what I remember of the Cannery– tasteful nautical theme.
My friends raved about the Smoked Alaskan Black Cod and Fresh Nova Scotia Lobster. However, I ordered the West Coast Bouillabaisse because I wanted a mixture of seafood to try.
After ordering we were given warm bread to dip in their famous lobster oil with balsamic vinegar. It was heaven! The lobster oil was very aromatic and the warm bread just melted in your mouth. We finished our basket of bread in a few inhales. You can opt to get another basket but there is a $ 2 charge.
Our food came out timely despite the large parties. I was blown away by the quantity and quality of the food. My bouillabaisse was brimming with salmon, cod, shrimp, scallops, mussels, and clams in a slightly spicy tomato and vegetable broth. For a seafood restaurant, I usually expect smaller portions but my dish was about double the size of other seafood dishes I’ve had at restaurants west of Pink Peppercorn. The seafood was also very fresh and cooked to perfection– the fish was soft and was easily flaked with my fork and the shrimps, scallops, clams, and mussels had bite and were not chewy. I not only finished the all of the seafood but also drank all of the seafood tomato broth. A couple friends ordered the whole lobster. The waiter said it just came in that morning from the east coast. I was really impressed with the size of the lobster and my friends mentioned it was the best lobster they have ever had. Again, perfected cooked and paired with drawn butter, mashed potatoes, and steamed vegetables.
The service was good. Our waiter was funny and attentive despite having a full house.
I was definitely decieved from the exterior and location. Pink Peppercorn is definitely a hidden gem. I highly recommemd this restaurant if you are looking for fresh seafood and at an incredible value.

It may not look like much from the outside and the tacky décor, but they do an amazing dishes! I love the steak here! Always cooked to perfection and super juicy! I’ve also tried salmon wellington and a couple of the other dishes but I tend to go back to the steak. The customer service here is usually very good, the older gentleman with the glasses is always delightful. He has very good customer service and remembers little things (how you like your steak cooked ect) which always amazes me! It can get pretty busy here so I recommend calling ahead or coming before prime dinner time.

Came for the first time Friday and left as converts. Peppercorn is an unassuming looking place on an equally unassuming look corner. The room is quiet even on a busy Friday night.
Decent size menu with lots of seafood and meat options. I could have ordered ½ dozen items. Prices seem highest until you eat there. Value for dollar is excellent.
Service is low key friendly– which is my highest compliment.
Wine list is minimal and not very interesting. (I need to check if they allow corkage and will update.)
Appy and main portion sizes are overly generous and could actually do with some downsizing. Dessert portions are just right. ;)
My (excellent) Salmon Wellington was simply too much for one (sane) person. It came with (excellent again) mashed potatoes, carrots, broccoli and asparagus? Tip — two adults can really split one Wellington.
Great job all around.

This place is my family’s go-​to restaurant when it’s a special occasion, birthday, celebration, anniversary! We love this place! Always the 4 of us that goes!
The food: 5 stars
Warm bread offered with the lobster oil and balsamic vinegar. You can help but soak up all the oil with your bread. You want MORE bread but don’t want to stuff yourself! Mmmm

They have the best San Francisco mussels here. The sauce is Devine, as you drink the sauce like soup while munching on the large plumped mussels that’s cooked to perfection.
Calamari is breaded and fried, not too oily. Chewy but not rubbery.
Smoker black cod!!! Omg omg!!! It’s my favorite! I had to share this dish bc the portion is too large for me to finish by myself. The cod is smooth and cooked just right, flakes off… Paired with mash potatoes and roasted veggies.
My parent shared the seafood linguini pasta in cream sauce. There was so much seafood in their pasta, shrimp, fish, scallops, mussels … All soaked in a nice white garlic sauce that’s not too heavy.
Crème brûlée — we should have ordered 2 of this! But we got the tiramisu as well, both were good, but the crème brûlée was better!

Waiters make fun cute jokes. All very attentive and are great servers!

Good service. The guy that served us was soft spoken and very professional and pleasant. The food was ok. Really liked the mussels. The peppercorn was different and we really enjoyed it. The tartar with the wasabi was interesting as well. The platter was alright. The panko cheese salad was uncomplicated. The cheese was good but the greens were not very good. Very common. Out of a salad bag and random dressing on top. I don’t think I got enough to go back again. The décor was very outdated as well. I don’t mind that if the food is good. However, I was surprised when I arrived

First timer here! I came with a friend and really didn’t know what to expect. First off, service was impeccable. The servers were so polite and my glass of water was always full. Food was good and the portions were very generous, but I wasn’t really blown away. I was not impressed with the bread and lobster oil, I mean it wasn’t bad but the bread was cold — would have been much better if fresh and warm. Cioppino was solid but not amazing (most of it was good, but every once in awhile I would get s bite that tasted a bit fishy). Décor is super tacky, which is unfortunate, because it’s just not a space I can sit and enjoy eating in — definitely not somewhere I’d take someone for a date. Anyways, if someone else suggested it I would have absolutely no problem coming back, and I’m sure I would enjoy my main, but it’s not somewhere I would suggest to others or return to on my own.

My first visit was over a year ago, and my second was on Mother’s Day.
My first visit was more quiet with hardly anyone in the restaurant.
The server was very nice and the food was very good.
My visit on Mother’s day was a little more of a let down.
I ordered a Cedar Plank Wild BC Salmon, and my fish was a little on the dry side. But everything else was delish! and the service was great!

The Cannery lives on at the Pink Peppercorn!
I loved the Cannery and missed it terribly when it closed its doors. After scanning the menu, the prices seem about the same. I ordered the smoked alaskan black cod (as I always did at the Cannery) and (still) love it! It is almost exactly as I remember it except double in portion size. I remember only having one piece of cod at the Cannery but I got two at this place. And the lobster oil! Mmm mmm!
The service was great and attentive. The place was packed on a Saturday night. The outside of the restaurant was very misleading in its décor and I drove by it multiple times without even noticing it was there!
