Record Store Day 2015

Record Store Day is an annual event, founded in 2007, held on the third Saturday of April each year to to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store.[1] The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world.[2] A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, and are only distributed to shops participating in the event.
If you’re a die hard music fan than Record Store Day is considered your national holiday even though we don’t get time off and gifts are few and far between. Although most music fans, especially those who collect vinyl do treat themselves to some rare releases specifically for this day.
First thing that pissed me off is that Dave Grohl was the ambassador for RSD, however, Canada was cock blocked in receiving any copies (at least in Vancouver) of the Foo Fighters RSD vinyl. I go on ebay a few hours later and they are up for $ 100 or more (price will drop in a few months). This was one the titles that I really wanted.
I did manage to get The Johnny Marr (The Smiths) 7″ of his cover of Depeche Mode’s «I Feel You» for $ 9 but that was all I was able to get out of my wish list of 10.
All things considering I should be glad I got something.
The event had at least 7 bands play the store throughout the day, a few local bands that were on my bucket list, however, due to a previous engagement only arrived for the last one but the party was still going on.
In spite of my gems today and in past years. Here is a summary of why I’ve given up on RSD in general unless there is something I really really want.
I appreciate that RSD has become a huge deal for independent record stores. It’s true that it can help out smaller shops’ second-​quarter bottom line, driving customer traffic into stores and loosening up people’s wallets to actually buy music. But the exclusives kill me. The glut of exclusives encourages competition over scarce items that will be touched once. You’re not training people to buy records in stores; you’re teaching them to wait a few days and go on the secondary market.
Thankfully when I got there it was filled with regulars in the music community who just wanted a place the celebrate, however, there were some scouts who were flipping records for 3 times as much which pisses me off.
RSD has become more about investment pieces than trying to grow an appreciation for vinyl in this generation.
The politics of who gets what in certain stores has always bothered me. I have had some years in which certain titles came days after RSD or things were lost and or orders forgotten.
I am still waiting for the Kylie Minogue 7″ single from last year.
