I live close to this restaurant so I’ve been eating here for years, but I recently stopped going due to declining portions. Also, I waited over an hour last time for them to serve me my udon. I had to remind them two times that I was still here waiting for my udon.

Lived in Kerrisdale so I would always drop by for a quick bite when I’m craving sushi. The price is average.(Among one of the cheaper ones in kerrisdale). I always try to get the lunch special with chicken teriyaki and California roll because I absolutely adore their Cali rolls. They don’t add mayo in the imitation crab. They don’t even shred it, but that’s why I like it so much. The portions are on the smaller side, and honestly other than their chicken teriyaki and their Cali rolls I don’t find any other food as mentionable. Service is quick and decent. Plus she has a good smile! Not a restaurant to recommend to friends or family but a nice touch of quick sushi in the neighbourhood.

Great quality of food, service, and price. I often go for sushi in Kerrisdale, and while the décor isn’t as nice as Asa, and the menu isn’t as expansive, they make up for it with the quality and value of their food. Their sashimi is very fresh, and they have some of the best imitation crab I’ve come across, and in my opinion, better salmon than Asa. For a quick, easy, cheap lunch, this place is as good as it gets.

The best sushi, for the best all round price, in Kerrisdale. No B.S. The guy who rolls the sushi at this place rolls them tight. A large menu, of noodles as well. The service is your average sushi joint service. Recommend, if you’re in Kerrisdale.

I normally do not eat rolls but I find their special rolls great. The price is also good for the rolls. I have never tried anything but their rolls.

My favourite sushi place. Box a is delicious and their yam tempura rolls are to die for. The veggie gyoza are great too, although sometimes they can be slightly over cooked. Their lunch is a great deal. Highly recommend!!!

Sushi Hachi is pretty much average, I’ve only gone here a few times because it was convenient and the prices are decent. The service was great the first time around when few of my friends and I sat in. The next few times, the service was horrible. I tried ordering some rolls over the phone and they had me wait to talk to someone who could actually speak English — I found that irritating. The next couple of times I went in to order something to-go, they took my friend’s order immediately, then the phone rung, the server told me to wait as she answered, while the other server was taking care of the other customers who were still eating. After the server hung up, she didn’t even bother to take my order — she basically ignored me and went on to clean tables. I stood there for at least another 3 minutes until someone finally took my order. I used my debit card, she took the receipt. Then five minutes later while I was waiting for my roll the same server who took my order came over and asked me if I paid… UH, YES, I DID. YOUTOOKMYORDERANDRECEIPTLESSTHAN5MINUTESAGO. This was the second time I was ignored and kept waiting and you can guarantee that I will not be ordering anything from Sushi Hachi anytime soon. I recommend other sushi joints in the Kerrisdale area if you want better service.

Rather disappointed with the service I received today. I don’t expect much from take-out sushi joints, but to be hung up on twice when I placed a take-out order is a little much. The girl took my order and phone number, then hung up before I could ask«how long will it be?», because order times vary greatly here. I called back, only to be hung up on again, and then the third time, it took five minutes to clarify that I had placed my order, but wanted to ensure it was actually taken as I got no confirmation. Also, today and the two previous times I have ordered take-out, the food has been exceptionally greasy. I like my deep fried food probably more than most people, but I don’t like it soggy, floating in grease. I’ll probably order from here again, but only because I love the tempura tofu and I have yet to come across another place that makes it. The vegetable tempura and gyoza(the greasy offenders), not likely.

My second favourite Japanese lunch spot in the neighbourhood. They have a combination pick 2 items lunch for under $ 8. Run by Chinese but they are fast and very courteous. The only thing I don’t like is their Miso Soup, its not very flavourful.

It was ok. Lunch for 6 – 7 bucks is a pretty good deal. The sushi was not bad but I got dissapointed when I order a karaage, I got a deep fried chicken wing instead. That’s not a karaage!

This place is pretty good for takeout and I always see a lot of people coming in to collect food! Their sushi is pretty standard and well-priced. It’s nothing high-end of course but it definitely does the job when you’re in the area and are craving sushi! I usually go for something safe like California or Dynamite rolls and save my more adventurous choices for somewhere a little bit nicer. I’d come here with a group of friends if we’re in the area but probably not on a date!

We were planning to go to Ajisai but it was a 20-minute wait and crowded as all-hell. We wanted to eat sushi and hear each other speak. I called my friend who lives on the West Side and he recommended Hachi. Such a great recommendation. I and the friend I called are both vegetarians who eat fish, but the friend I was with didn’t eat fish(he likes the veggie sushi). Hachi has an excellent selection of vegetarian(no fish) sushi — a whole page of veggie rolls. We got Miso Soup, I had gomae, sweet potato tempura roll, vegetable roll, and California roll. They asked if I wanted real crab or artificial(different prices) for the California roll. I said artificial and when it came the unidentified-fish-masquerading-as-crab was just a solid chunk instead of shredded and mixed with mayo. But all the other rolls we got were delicious. My friend got a sweet potato tempura roll, avocado and cucumber roll, and a plain avocado roll. Good prices too. I will definitely go back!

…nice little place for good sashimi — it just literallly melts in your mouth. i personally thought the special rolls were slightly overpriced and while it was good, it was nothing to die for. ordered a dish that i thought was uniquely presented — rainbow sashimi pressed roll. looked great, but it was just way too much rice pressed together and thin slices of sashimi on top. overall, good eats, simple place, friendly service, ok pricing.

A decent spot for functional sushi if you just want your Japanese basics. I don’t have an inherent problem with Chinese-run Japanese restaurants(it’d be hypocritical of me to pigeonhole) but there was some tension going on the day I visited that seems to me more typical of Chinese dynamics — but it could be that I only noticed since I could understand the boss/chef yelling from the back to the girl in front about her supposed clumsiness and stupidity. Even if the other patrons didn’t understand the language, I’d be surprised if they missed the tone and volume of his voice! At one point, he stormed out from behind to a customer’s table near the front and turned the sushi platter 90 degrees and apologized for the supposedly haphazard way the girl had placed it on the table. In all fairness to the angry boss, the girl was a bit slow. I wasn’t offered or brought any tea or water until after all my food had arrived. There were only a few other patrons, yet she couldn’t remember who had ordered what. As for the food, I decided to stick with the basic choices on the $ 6.95 lunch special. The california roll had a full stick of imitation crab, rather than the chopped up kind with mayonnaise.(If you’re on a diet, this would be healthier, I suppose.) The assorted tempura was pretty good. As for the miso soup, with its one tiny cube of tofu, it’s not worth writing anything more about. Overall, the food is serviceable. But the service and atmosphere need some refinement.

Decently priced Japanese restaurant. Chinese ran, if this is something you care about. X’mas Roll — one of the special rolls. Fresh seafood. Beautifully put together. At $ 10-$ 13, I did find the pricing of the special rolls a bit higher than similar price range restaurants. Beef Kimchi Hot Pot — a decidedly Korean offering on the menu, though it tastes like vegetable soup my Chinese mother would make + kimchi + Teriyaki beef. So let’s call this Korean-Chinese-Japanese fusion soup then. It works though and I enjoyed it nonetheless. Big portions — I pretty much packed up half to go. Also had tastes of the Oyakodon. Big portions as well. Chicken was very tender. Service was friendly and prompt. Overall a great first impression and Sushi Hachi has been added to my Kerrisdale eats list.

As pics suggest, what a steal for their lunch specials: pick any two items are this laminated list, for just $ 6.95. chose the spicy tuna roll and 5 pc pork gyoza to go, worth the vallue, and actually tasted better than one would think. Good that it’s got imitation cali roll lol. It’s not fair to compare to an izakaya but worth going, high ceilings, pleasant staff and clean washrooms. Not truly authentic but does the job.

This is my go-to place when I’ve forgotten my lunch at work. They have a great $ 6.95 lunch deal, where you order two items and it comes with miso. You can get a roll, and a hot dish(teriyaki beef with mixed veg is my choice) or two rolls, or two hot dishes… you catch my drift. This is what i always order when I’m there(the $ 6.95 deal) so that’s what I’ll be reviewing from. I’m not a big fan of their sushi. I LOVE spicy tuna, and spicy salmon rolls, their spicy rolls have this weird flaked pepper aftertaste from the sauce. I also am not a big fan of their gyoza, which also has the weird flaked pepper aftertaste. Their hot foods are pretty okay. Curry chicken with potatoes and peas on rice is pretty good on a rainy day. Their teriyaki is pretty oily and doesn’t have a very profound flavour. It doesn’t come with rice, just veg, so you’re left feeling a bit hungry after. Their Goe-mae…SO. GOOD. The perfect sesamy-ness, the spinach is always perfectly cooked and not gooey. Their miso isn’t anything special. Just a basic cloudy no-veg, not tons of tofu, soggy green onion miso. As for the service. I can honestly say I have never had great service here. My meal has either forgotten to be rung in, I’ve been given a new server and the previous one hasn’t been told, I’ve had to literally walk up to my server to ask for more tea or water, the food’s taken my near entire lunch break to be made and delivered to me… Yeah. Not the best service. So I guess all in all I’d say if you’re looking for a cheap meal with mediocre Japanese food, and have a good amount of time, check it out. Otherwise try one of the many other Japanese restaurants in Kerrisdale.

I keep ordering takeaway and that’s probably the best bet if you want to have a peaceful eating experience. It’s so busy at lunch that you feel like an express train is running through the place. And probably good for the owners, but not for customers taking a break from the office. Good SABA [Mackerel], real California roll and wasabi.

Aagh — I had been SO looking forward to sushi at Ajisai only to find out that it’s closed at lunch :( Since I’m now in Kerrisdale and I don’t know the area well, I pull out the Blackberry and log onto trusty Unilocal for advice… eek, not much help for sushi in this area! We wandered around and I saw a sign for Sushi Hachi… I thought, could it be? Would this be related to the excellent Sushi Hachi in Richmond? Unfortunately, there’s no relationship to that gem, but this one manages to hold its own. This is a fairly basic sushi/sashimi place with simple décor. Decent selection of rolls and sushi, although they do not carry the rarer/pricier fishes. Prices are very reasonable here and the quality is decent. I had the mango roll(essentially a Cali roll with slices of mango and fish eggs on top), negitoro, unagi and salmon sushi. Nice freshness and firmness to the fishes, although I am still partial to Ajisai. The presentation could be a bit more polished including cuts of the rolls and evenness of the rice. Service was attentive. Gets an «A-OK» for me especially at this price — came to under $ 15 a person for lunch.
