Description

Specialties

We are a green custom upholstery business in that we love to reuse, repurpose, recycle, restyle and reupholster. We recycle all of our foam scraps and believe in preserving old furniture because it is strong and solidly made, and because we don’t like to see it end up in landfills. «They just don’t make it like they used to» is so true in the furniture business. Most new furniture is made of plywood, particle board and cardboard — yes cardboard. The average life span of a new piece of furniture can be as short as 3 – 5 years, whereas an old, solid piece of furniture that is reupholstered could last 20 – 30 years.

Service offered by Vancouver Upholstery are as follows: All types of household and marine upholstery; Couch reupholstery, armchair reupholstery, custom headboards, antique chair restorations, furniture repair, marine upholstery, fabric sales, foam sales, latex mattresses, reupholstery supplies.

Furniture pick up/delivery and in home consultation are also part of these services

Meet the Business Owner

John G.

Business Owner

Vancouver Upholstery is a venture by John Gledstone making him the third generation of Gledstones to own and operate a upholstery business. The upholstery industry is not unfamiliar to John as his family has been in the upholstery industry dating back to the 1940s. Robert’s grandfather Wynne Gledstone opened a shop in Richmond in 1946 where he taught his sons the trade. Wynne maintained this successful 40-year business until he retired at the age of 74. All Wynne’s sons, John’s two uncles and his father all eventually owned their own shops as well. John first experience was at 1 week old when he was put up on his fathers cutting table. He first truly worked in his father’s shop at the age of 14 and it was then that he first learned how to refinish woodwork, cut and recover antique upholstery, manage a shop, order supplies, quote projects as well as various other duties a upholstery shop requires.
