The Fernwood Inn

Good location, nice atmosphere but crummy décor and pretty lousy food. The latter point is what drives my 2-​star rating.

Nothing special at all. Actually, less than special. Poor service, and food is really nothing special. So it’s in a cute neighborhood, I wouldn’t go here again.

Today was the second day I ate gere, first time was when I arrived and today when I’m leaving.
The first time around I ordered the chorizo burger (around 17 $) and it was OK but not great to say the least. It was just an average pub meal.
Second time was today three days after: ordered a plater of nachos with my girlfriend and then the prawn skillet and polenta! And it was great! Absolutely delicious with many sea food, well cooked and nice presentation.
The nachos were great as well but very big, we were both full after it.
They have a nice terrace and a large selection of beers.

Food is really good but if you want to have a conversation go at lunch time it gets so loud in there at dinner you can’t hear the person across from you.

Good beer on tap. Good food (fresh ingredients & greens) and friendly staff. Great atmosphere and location (fernwood). Cheers.

Good service but food was horrible. Wings were the smallest and most pathetic excuse for chicken wings i’ve ever seen. Nachos were $ 18+ and topped with corn and little else!!!
This place is horrible!!! Do not waste your time or money!

I tried the mussels in Thai curry sauce and it was a great choice. The burger was not very interesting but the chicken tenders were pretty crispy and a good size. The server was friendly and attentive even though it was a busy lunch hour.
I’d drop by if I was in the neighborhood but I don’t think I’d make any special effort to come here. That said, great local hangout!

I come here to be happy. ‘Nuff said. Also, Vic is the best server so far encountered, though all are excellent.
The patio is both kid and dog friendly, but also is amiable to multiple jäger shots. Win, win.

They have Philips beer on tap.

The crowd hip Fernwood families and bearded flannels ratio is always a bit high.
A fat, shorts wearing, low fashion, opportunistic drunkard I do feel a bit out of place.
Though I can drink anywhere, I seem to drink here more. It could be because I live a block away…
Also they just brought out some blankets to some chilly people on the patio. That’s nice.

After refusing to pay $ 9 for a tapas small plate of green beans at that «other» place across the road we stumbled upon the Fernwood Inn.
We had the Burger & Beer special while sharing a beet salad.
Beet Salad — Fresh greens toped with perfectly cooked beets, toasted nuts and goat cheese (all out of the standard blue cheese). The salad was fantastic, fresh and crispy.
Burger — Another place that does burgers well. They dont complicate things by overthinking the seasoning. Good meat only needs a light season and proper cooking and the cooks at the Fernwood do it right.
Fries — we made the mistake of adding the fries to each burger, we should have shared. The fries is a huge serving.
Beer — I wasnt a big fan of the beer that comes with the special. It was lacking in both body and flavour. If you like the standard mass produced beers like Canadian or Corona you MAY like this one. I prefer more robust beer of which Victoria produces many.
Would I go here again, you bet. Good food, nice atmosphere, friendly staff.

I generally love this pub. The menu is good, with lots of fresh local choices. My personal favourites include the Whiskey Chicken Sandwich, the duck poutine and the Inn Salad. The salad is something not to pass by with goat cheese, macadamia nuts and lovely blueberries.
On busy nights, like Thursdays, the service can be slow but in general the waitresses are kind and enthusiastic. I’ve only had one bad experience and it was due to an underwhelming wait staff member. Luckily, this is not usually the case. It also tends to be on the loud side.

Menu had quite a mélange of food items from samosas to burgers to Ginger fried beef and even samosas. You can go around the world without leaving the table! Food was not bad. Salads were a good size. Burgers served with lots of fries.
Tuna Steak sandwich was quite tasty but it was not quite the sandwich what I expected. The toast was nice but it was very, very thin, so it wasn’t possible to eat it like a sandwich with the thick piece of tuna. Tuna was cooked to perfection but the tomato basil salad only consisted of a few pieces of greens and two very tiny, thin slices of tomato.
The side soup was extremely small. It was about the size of a baby sized food container… Maybe 2 ounces!
Good spot… Some good things and some not so good, but overall a good experience.
Note: they do beer tasting for their cruise line visitors… Wished they did it for their regular customer’s too!

I had to add that the Fernwood in is a great place to get a beer and burger on Tuesday. For $ 9.95 you get the Fernwood Ale and either a vegge burger or a bacon cheddar burger.
The burger comes on a fresh chiabatta bun and all the fixings, lettuce, tomato, cheese, bacon, onion etc. It was fabulous. Absolutely fabulous.
The beer was okay, they’d just changed the keg when we ordered our Fernwood Ale and I’m pretty sure they actually gave me an IPA, but it was decent. For just under $ 2 more you can upgrade to a different beer and for an additional $ 3 you can get a side. Either way it’s way cheaper than normal and I have to say, one of the best burgers I’ve had in a really long time.

This neighborhood pub-​style restaurant is a wonderful addition to Fernwood. The building is beautiful and the food is generally quite good.
My last experience was disappointing despite the warm atmosphere and friendly service. Frankly the food was borderline terrible. The wings were gummy and didn’t taste at all fresh. And the Fernwood salad, which is normally delicious was wilty with frozen blueberries instead of fresh. I know blueberries aren’t in season right now, but how about taking this dish of the menu until they’re available again?

This restaurant is pretty close to my house, and with their later than usual hours I end up eating here frequently.
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for fewer than three people, because it’s pretty loud. The wait staff is generally very good, not a lot of chatting with tables (which I like) and very quick with bringing out food.
Their burgers are always very good. I recommend the sweet potato fries to go with them! Also, the pickled beet salad is really good, one of my favorite things on the menu. Additionally, on Thursday nights they offer a «Wing Night», with plates of chicken wings for 5 dollars. The whiskey barbeque flavor is my favorite, the garlic honey is way too sweet, but the Frank’s Red Hot is good.
The Montréal Smoked Meat Stack and the Steak Sandwich are both pretty disappointing. Both of these sandwiches come open-faced…which really ruins them in my opinion. Add to that the Montréal Smoked Meat Stack is COVERED in mustard… and I love mustard, but it was so much I almost couldn’t eat it. Who wants to eat an open faced sandwich with sauerkraut, and melted cheese on it anyhow? Bad idea.
If you are vegan or vegetarian… this isn’t an ideal menu for you, pretty much everything has meat or dairy in it.

This is a good venue for a group due to how casual it is and the size of the tables. The menu is fairly small and is pretty simple. Everything I’ve had to eat was decent pub fare. The service is pretty swift and drinks make their way to the tables quickly. It’s loud which is great for a group (you can have a boisterous time without being «that table») but perhaps not where you want to go to catch up over a pint on a one-​on-​one date.

This review is specifically for their crême brulée. Many afficionados know about the place already, but if you haven’t tried it, add it to the do-​before-​you-​die list.
It is so smooth, so silky, so rich, so perfect that I could never dream of making it this way at home. I ate it there over a month ago and I still remember it like this. Its temperature is perfect, the sugar crust is perfect… It really is their specialty. Good artsy/​alternative neighbourhood too.
Try the jamaican place across the street for dinner then eat dessert here (and review the jamaican place because I can’t remember the name).
