One of the few dim sum places in Windsor, but not a very good one at that.
Shun King is located in a tiny strip mall by some residential homes near Devonshire. The place is pretty cramp and has this annoying buzzing door. (You’ll know what I mean if you go). The menu is your standard chinese takeout menu but they do offer up a dim sum menu. The options had all your dim sum staples so I was pretty excited to try it out. The lady who runs the place with her husband is cool but it wouldn’t hurt to smile. (Though as Asians, we can look emotionally constipated at times…)
The food here was decent but nothing special. We ordered so many different dim sum items. To start, the shrimp dumplings were decent, but the skin was a bit too frail and it had a weird kinda smell to it. The scallop dumplings sounded interesting, but they were just shrimp dumplings with a tiny piece of scallop on each one. The scallops were a bit rubbery so it wasn’t really worth getting. The shrimp and bbq pork rice noodle crepes were good. I always enjoy that dish and the sauce that accompanies it. I always save that sauce for dipping other things as well.
Another interesting item was the curry chicken spring rolls. They were exactly as advertised; chicken curry stuffed into a spring roll. The spring rolls were long and thin and I doubt there was much chicken in there to begin with. The stuffed eggplant was good. The eggplant seemed fresh and the filling was your typical shrimp paste. The steamed pork buns were good too. The turnip cake was pan fried to perfection but was a bit greasy. The worst thing there were the chicken feet. I love chicken feet but this place had the worst that I’ve ever tasted. I’m hoping this was a one time thing, but it tasted and smelled like… feet. (For those who have had it before, you know it shouldn’t taste like feet). The skin and cartilage was tough and the smell was not very pleasant.
I didn’t want to end it on a bad note, but the place was nothing better than a mediocre dim sum place. Now I can’t speak for the food, but I don’t expect much better quality on the items. My rating reflects my thoughts on my experience…“meh. I’ve experienced better”
