I had my birthday at the smittys garden city restaurant. We have never ever had a problem with the food or service in the past but that night marks one of the worst food experiences ever! I booked for 15 people ahead of time and they said no problem to accommodate… I changed the number of people to 30 the day before as I found out more people were excited to have wings with me on my birthday. The hostess on the Phone said no problem and that the manager will call. Both times that I placed the call, the hostess said the manager would call but I never received a call from the«manager»…to me, this meant there is no problem. The day of my birthday, my family and I arrive… all30 of us. Our server was jasmine… she was awesome! She stayed calm even thought of writing down our names with each order as a tracking system. It took a while but none of us minded… until. The orders started coming out slowly. jasmine was on the ball handing out orders according the the names she jotted down… then another person«Jessica» who to my horror I found was the assistant manager?!? Starting barking out«who ordered lemon pepper!!?» And continued to bark our orders. I swear the rest of the restaurants heard her and we felt like children being yelled at! On top of that she wasn’t using the same system as Jasmine was so she started confusing everyone! then the orders started getting screwed up. everyone was finished eating and a few guest hadn’t received their orders. In fact the food brought out last consisted of a fish and chips platter(raw on the inside) and a wing basket of VISIBLY salt drenched wings which the assistant manager argued that is how it is normally made! jasmine actually politely called our attention and apologized on behalf of the staff for the quality of the food and service. which I was grateful she did because she displayed professionalism and the assistant manager can learn a thing or two from her. This is a service driven job and I understand that… I am a manager myself and would never ever treat anyone like the assistant manager did. My guests later called the restaurant to get reimbursed since the assistant manager did not want to compensate for poor service. but to our disappointment the General Manager had more attitude than any of us would want to deal with. Excuses like«there was a change in the number of people attending, we got comp’d for some of the food, what else are we looking for??» Well excuse me but they were notified ahead of time regarding the large party — be prepared!!! NOONE called me to say they can’t accommodate us, free food? Are you kidding me??? The fish was raw! What if my guest got sick??? In the end the complaint went to the owner who apologized for the service that night. The servers were calm, collected and organized… the managers need to learn some soft skills, effective communication skills and client service skills! I think I’m going to stick to the lounge at garden city smittys where the service is excellent. as for the restaurant side… they need some new management!

To be honest, this wasn’t what I had in mind for breakfast today. But while breakfast was cooking the power went out, so… Last time(about two years ago) we were here, service was abysmal and rude, and the tables were a mess. So I was worried about coming back, but there’s not much for all day breakfast choices, so we gave it another shot. I’m glad we did. Our waitress Arielle was terrific and knew everything about the menu. She also knew about preparation without having to go ask(poached eggs — she had an answer without blinking as to how they are made. When my wife sent back the sausage for bacon — they were deep fried — Arielle turned it around in two minutes. My breakfast — steak and eggs– is so often disappointing, but not here! Properly basted eggs, the steak was perfect, and they even have raspberry jam for toast. Lots of selection, great service, all worth the day out.
