Tranquebar is a quirky place. It doesn’t look like your typical Indian restaurant, as it has odd art on the walls and a mannequin doll in the toilets(startled me at first). Atmosphere is nice enough, and there’s plenty of stuff to look at. The service is very friendly, although on the eccentric side, which I suppose goes rather well with the restaurant. My daughter(5 yo), wife and I visited the place. We came specifically because Tranquebar is the only place in Copenhagen that serves South Indian specialities. Wife and I ordered the dosa, and daughter had a chicken curry. We also ordered a salad. The chicken curry came with rice and it was very mild(the waitress had asked if we’d like it mild for our daughter). The taste was very nice, and the little girl ate a lot of it. The dosa was a mixed experience. The pancake itself was fine, but there wasn’t enough of the potato stuffing(which was delicious). The accompanying sambal was OK, but no great, and then there was some sor of other liquid served with the food, which was absolutely tasteless. It had yoghurt in it, but I don’t know what it was supposed to be. I would have preferred the traditional fresh coconut chutney as accompaniment. Tranquebar is a very cheap place, and the food we had was decent, especially if you consider how cheap it is. Worth going to if you’re in the neighbourhood and on a budget.

try the dosa! it was so delicious that i had to get another one. in fact, everyone at the table ordered it. the staff took good care of us and repeatedly checked that everything was in order. besides our large party, there were two indian families with young children who seemed to be enjoying the food as much as us. the price is not bad either; 2 dosas and 2 teas for 130kr. i’ll be back!

First thing you’ll notice is that the place looks a bit kitschy, but at some point you’ll realize that the photos are family photos from the time the(Danish) owner lived in India. The menu has a good selection of Indian dishes without trying to list every Indian dish known to westerners, something I see as a good sign. Prices are very reasonable by Copenhagen standards and the service is friendly and smiling, but it can sometimes take a while to catch the waiters attention. What puts this unimpressively looking Indian restaurant in the five star category for me is that the food which deserves the label excellent. Well made using quality ingredients and expertly seasoned, letting the individual flavours stand out. Just perfect. I used to live around the corner from there so I’ve eaten there a few times and the food has consistently been excellent, and on top of that it’s cheap for Copenhagen. Definitely a place to come back to.
