Zoologisk Have

This was the best zoo ever! Unfortunately as with all zoos their pens were too small and I felt very sorry for them but so of the animals were amazing and seeing them so close up was fantastic! There were polar bears which I have never seen before and brown bear cubs! The the red pandas were so cute. Definatly worth a visit if you are in Copenhagen.

Zoo! Animals! I can imagine the excitement of a kid upon the hearing the word zoo and since I’m also a huge animal lover, zoo still brings me the same excitement.
It’s still a good experience to see these animals (albeit in their enclosed surrounding) up close, so you don’t need to go to Africa to see the lions, the giraffe or to go to the woods to see the dangerous wolves and so on — you get my point.
I think Copenhagen Zoo is the right size and I like their Nordic animals section better, mostly because I had not seen polar bear up close until I moved to Copenhagen (I was living in the tropics before!) and the reindeer, and the bison and the rest of them. I love the fact that the zoo has provided lots of educational information in each section, games to play, lots of exciting things to try for both kids or adult like me.
I love zoo in the summer where most animals are out to play and when you can get your ice cream from those small huts in the middle. It’s one of my best earlier memories of Copenhagen.
So, why the four stars instead of five? Simple, because the entrance is damn expensive at 170 DKK. I get it, you need money to take care of the animals and I’m up for that, but I still think it’s quite expensive price to pay unless you really really want to go there so it’s not the kind of place that you go randomly when you’re bored, or maybe I’m just being stingy.
If you are more into zoo than I do, though, you could get the annual card for around 400 kr (check their website for more updated pricelist), that you could use to enter the zoo ANYTIME you want. Sounds better? I hope so.
Anyway, if you live in Copenhagen and haven’t been to the zoo at all, set aside 170 DKK and go get a ticket (you can purchase the ticket online and scan it yourself by the entrance to avoid the queue — very useful during summertime when there are a lot of people). Have fun seeing the animals!

After our visit to the Carlsberg Brewery, we walked across the park to the zoo. [Does anyone know what that park is called?] Perhaps it’s because it was a cold and windy day or because it was during the Easter holiday (tip: never visit Copenhagen during Easter; many stores and restaurants are closed!), but the zoo was practically deserted. While I’m not a fan of huge crowds and actually prefer fewer people around, the emptiness and cold weather made it a rather lackluster experience. I’m not giving the zoo poor ratings because it was a cold day or because there were few visitors, but this was the most depressing zoo/​animal park that I have ever been to. (The polar bears looked so miserable, walking around in circles out of boredom, it was heartbreaking.) I did enjoy the elephant exhibit, though.

der kopenhagener zoo ist eine kleine, sehr gepflegte anlage auf der eine große anzahl tiere aus aller herren länder zu bewundern ist. geführt wird diese von freundlichem und hilfsbereitem personal. der eintritt kostet 170 kronen was ca 23 euro entspricht. die einen werden sagen — was? viel zu teuer, ich sage nur — nein ist es nicht. die tiere wollen schließlich auch essen, die pflege der gehege und instandhaltung kostet etc. hier gebe ich gern jeden euro aus. das areal ist zweigeteilt. gleich hinter dem eingang befindet sich das merchandising, mehrere essensmöglichkeiten und ein großer aussichtstum.
der zoo-​tower kostet nmormalerweise extra. wir hatten gestern das glück zum geburtstag des 110 jahre alten turms zu kommen und durften ihn daher kostenfrei besteigen (sonst 10 kronen). das ist nichts für jeden, es geht wirklich hoch hinauf. einen lift gibt es nicht aber 2 ebenen. also wer merkt er schafft es nicht kann ab ebene 2 wieder runter. beim bau hat jemand mitgedacht — es gibt nämlich eine treppe für hoch und eine für runter! sehr schlau. die aussicht ist die qual des aufstiegs allemal wert. von oben hat man einen wunderbaren blick über den zoo und einen großen teil kopenhagens. kann ich nur empfehlen!
im hauptteil der anlage findet man südamerikanische vögel, den arktischen ring, nachtaktive tiere, primaten, den tropen zoo, großkatzen, asiatische und nordische tiere. highlights für mich: ganz klar die tiger, pinguine und der arktischen ring. der war vergleichbar mit hagenbecks tierpark. dort ist alles viel größer aber die kopenhagener haben viele spiele zum ausprobieren. so kann man zum beispiel mit einem eisbären um die wette tauchen, seinen tagesablauf als videoanimation sehen und versuchen, am eisloch lauernd, eine robbe zu fangen. sehr überaschende animation wenn es klappt. eltern, die ihre kinder nicht mit der realität konfrontieren wollen, sollten die kleinen das entweder nicht spielen lassen oder ihnen die augen zuhalten: D splatterfreunde werden sich amüsieren. hehe.
über einen tunnel der unter der hauptstraße durchführt erreicht man den zweiten teil des tierparks. hier sind die themen afrika und kinderzoo. quasi bauernhof plus zebras, giraffen, strauße usw. diese hälfte haben wir gar nicht mehr komplett geschafft. wir kamen um kurz nach 15 uhr. der zoo schloss um 18 uhr. auch hier vertraut man den gästen, dass sie selbstständig zum ausgang gehen und so wurde es auf einmal schlagartig leer im park. wir waren dann tatsälich die letzten und es wurde hinter uns abgeschlossen. die mitarbeiter waren trotzdem sehr nett und verständnisvoll.
im park gibt es freies wlan. das passwort steht auf einem schild hinter der kasse. für kinder und familien stehen kleine karren bereit auf den man kind und kegel hinterherziehen kann. snackshops und toiletten (sauber und gepflegt) gibt es auf dem gesamten areal. infotafeln informieren über die täglichen attraktionen wie tierfütterungen und kinderbespaßung.
auffallend war die hohe anzahl an sitzmöglichkeiten. überall gibt es tische und bänke, unter freiem himmel, überdacht für schlechtes wetter, direkt an den gehegen und etwas abseits, … auch dahingehend hat wer mitgedacht!

I love the zoo and Copenhagen zoo has some great things: like The Artic Ring, the hippo house, the elephants and the Savanna.
Sadly other parts of the zoo is run down and needs to be updated (I’m thinking the monkeys).
The choice of food in here is bad and I would recommend bringing a sandwich. There are a lot of picnic tables to enjoy a good homemade lunch.
The price brings it down too. Plus you have to pay for children as young as 3 years old.

Nice older zoo with above average mix of animals, e.g. giraffes, big cats and elephants. When I was there in August 2014, there were numerous baby animals of different species, which was a treat, and they walked the camels around a bit, which added a little frisson of danger. The children’s area focuses on farm animals but can be fun.
One secret: you can see the elephants from the the adjacent park so if elephants is what you want, you don’t have to pay!
Depending on your politics/​visceral reaction, you may want to review the zoo’s decisions to kill certain animals in 2014 before you decide to go (at the time of writing one of the reviews here seems to be based on this rather than an experience at the zoo itself). I was amazed by how poor the zoo’s PR management was but decided to visit the zoo anyway. My understanding is that the zoo’s rationale was basically, «We have to maintain genetic diversity in coordination with other European zoos and it’s difficult to transport exotic animals to North America»

The Copenhagen Zoo was part of the attractions covered by the Copenhagen Card so we didn’t have to pay anything for entrance. They have an extensive collection of different animals so it will take some time to wander through the entire zoo. My favorite were the polar bears, camels and the red pandas. The Arctic ring section was still under construction when we visited. Even without that, there is enough to see at the other sections of the zoo for an enjoyable time.
If you do visit Copenhagen Zoo, be sure to visit the Frederiksberg Garden (right across the zoo) for a relaxing stroll!
