Ummmm… Yes please! It’s like someone took a slice of Miami Beach and dropped it front and center in the industrial beach land down the road from Eiranranta. AKA: too close to my home to be safe. So. Much. Food. And a great center bar. Outdoor seating, cabana-esque bar area, tons of food and drink. If you’re visiting from San Francisco — this is what Kelly’s Mission Rock was in the early 2000s, if you took a bunch of sand and dumped it all around Kelly’s Mission Rock. It’s also like Jelly’s was in the early 2000s and it’s even MORE like a middle class man’s version of The Ramp. But with like a dozen different restaurants peddling their goods from food stands. So I want my son to grow up awesome. I turned out ok and I’m pretty sure it’s because my parents took me to places like this and let me get a taste of what the fun life looks like early on in life. It taught me work just hard enough to be able to go to places like this on a regular basis. Thanks, mom and dad. You’re welcome, son. So when I see my little tow-head’s eyes light up and I see the wheels of destruction begin spinning inside that crafty little mind as we approach Hernesaaren Ranta, I feel like I’m winning at this momming thing. As an aside: I write a lot about the kid-friendliness of places because I have this small person following me everywhere I go. I can’t shake him. He’s on me like white on rice. A lot of other people share my condition. I think we deserve to be represented in public forums. You’re welcome. There is food for everyone. Let me break it down: Hanko Sushi(get the veg platter), Street Gastro(get the burger). There is Mexican and Pizza and everything in between. The bar in the middle is awesome for kids. Just push your Bugaboo(yes, if you are reading this and you live within walking distance of this place, you have one) up that ramp and take a look around at the huge, cushy, brightly colored banquettes in that giant, airy room with booze in the middle, a dj in the corner and so much space to dance with your kid you won’t have to chase them around too much. What? You didn’t know they have a DJ? They do. He’s awesome. I am from California. I’m a hippie. I like to drink champagne. I may on occasion dance a lot with my child in this area. No one will judge. Everyone is here for a good time. Go on a sunny day, grab a seat on one of the many decks overlooking the water or hunker down in the covered bar area. Order your food, sip a drink or three, chill out to some good beats, and hope your kid naps the whole time. Enjoy!

Drink expensive cava in a plastic cup under the fake palmtrees and realize that you would rather be in a warm country.

Many restaurants, cafes and bars by the sea pop up during the summer months in Helsinki. Another new one joined this year and opened in Hernesaari. Hernesaaren Ranta has a slightly different concept from most other places. Much like Allas you can find food and drinks here from several small kiosks that all offer something different. No matter if you want to have a relaxed glass of wine or spoon some delicious ice cream by the sea you will find what you were looking for here. There is even a free shuttle connection from the center leaving next to Ateneum at the full hour that gets you straight there. You can otherwise also take bus 14 from Kamppi. Check it out!
