this place looks great, but the service was lacking. we ordered a dish and the waiter said«not available» when i asked him if there were any other specials, he pointed to the most expensive meat dish on the menu. I repeated the question, are there any daily specials, and again he pushed for that dish. We had been out all day and didn’t want to delay ordering more, since it had already taken a while to get his attention so we got it. it was one of the more awkward waiter exchanges i’ve had. i found the basic drinks on the pricey side, 5.5 euros for a glass of cola, i don’t know if this is standard or not. at the end of the meal, when he came with card reader, he asked, in english, what the amount was, it was a little unclear if he was asking for an additional tip or just didn’t pick up the paper. we overheard several other americans, so i’m not sure if this is on the hotel reccomendation circuit or something. they seemed pleased with thier meal, though the table next to us seemed to be waiting a very long time for their entrees. i’m not sure i would wholly reccomend this, or would eat here again, given the choice.

We didn’t eat here, but stopped by for some drinks on our way out of Montparnasse. The waiter was super adorable and really sweet. Loved the restaurant — great ambiance. Although, we didn’t eat here, the lunch looked delicious. It was quite busy every time we walked by which is always a good sign.

There are more than a dozen bistros in the area — don’t eat at this one. We order steaks, when we told the server they were cold he took them back and put them in the microwave making them impossible to chew. We shared our displeasure with the server he took them and brought us… I’m not sure. They were like thin slices of beef completely burnt. We told him we were really disappointed hoping he would offer another dish. Instead he began to yell at us and tell us he couldn’t do anything more(never in my life have I seen a server speak like this to clients). The Parisians with me were even more appalled than I was, really go anywhere else.

Had the warm duck gizzard & foie gras salad. The foie gras & salad were delicious. Sans the duck gizzards. I was expecting the warm duck gizzards to be more brown in color– thinking it would be cooked– but instead was smoked. My mistake. Overall, a nice casual place for a bite & drink.

(English below. Il a un peu l’air ‘see and be seen’ qui me rappelle légèrement ma ville de naissance, LA. Being a resident of the Montparnasse neighborhood, I pass by the place Edgar Quinet, and thus this café, very often. It’s always the most crowded and the most hopping of the cafes in the square. It’s a little bit«see and be seen,» which reminds me just a tad of my dear hometown, LA. In my opinion, this attitude is a bit rare for the neighborhood. Maybe it’s because the prices are so much higher. Anyway, the food is quite nice, except for the bread. There is an excellent baker not even ten seconds away from this café and yet they serve the worst bread in Paris! So: minus one star for the prices and minus another for the bread.

Great coffee, croque madame was below average… Goat cheese salad was not up to expectations with brown lettuce leaves and a piece of plastic that somehow infiltrated the salad…

Decent enough lunch place near the catacombs and cemetery. They have a decent apertif list and very nice lunch specials.
