Edelweiss Lodge and Resort US Hotel

My husband surprised me with a weekend getaway to Edelweiss. It’s really clean and the staff is helpful & friendly. I liked the layout of our room and the view.
We went to Zuggy’s base camp for dinner one night. Happy hour was from 1700 to 1900. We ordered some chips and salsa, potato wedges, tacos, & pizza. It was just bar food nothing fancy or exciting about it. I did really like the snickers ice cream pie.
On the last morning we went to the breakfast buffet at Market Station and it was good. Made to order eggs and omelets, fruit, pancakes, ham & bacon, and everything else. It gets very busy after 9 because they close the buffet at 10 and the staff was having a hard time getting food on the line. So I would suggest going earlier if you don’t want to wait for eggs and pancakes.
I really liked the resort. It was very peaceful and relaxing. Next time I hope to come back here and stay longer.

I hate writing 1 star reviews as you can tell from my profile but this one deserves it. Just because I felt like calculating it out, less than 5% of my reviews are 1 star reviews. To be fair, it was more of a 1.5 star review but I’m still in pain so I’m rounding down. Yes pain! My family stayed here for one weekend. It started off fine until I stepped into the elevator on the 3^rd floor. It was dinnertime and we went into the elevator and pushed the button for the ground level. Shockingly the elevator screeched to a halt and you could hear a loud screeching then a heavy thud sound! It felt like we slammed into a wall of bricks! Immediately, I felt an intense pain in my neck. Instead of displaying what floor the elevator was going to, it displayed «out of work.» We stayed somewhere between 3^rd and 2^nd floor for a few minutes then the doors opened to 2^nd floor and a voice came from the callbox «Are you guys, ok?» My husband replied «We are fine but I wouldn’t let anyone on these elevators today.» When we got out of the elevator I told my husband about the pain and he began to massage it but it still throbbed. We decided to take the stairs to the ground floor and took the stairs the rest of the weekend.
We stood in line for dinner and as we waited, we saw the elevator being used for the next 10 minutes. Are you kidding me? No one shut the elevator down or even looked at it. I went to reception desk and informed them of what happened. The kind receptionist told me the security manager would be taking down a report for me. At least she was apologetic and acted concerned.
Now I’m eating dinner and a lady stating she was the security manager appeared and wanted to hear me out. After listening to me, she never apologized, but did say that the elevators do stop often here. I couldn’t believe my ears! The elevators often stop to an abrupt halt with a loud screeching sound??? So many guests often have aching necks then??? She added «and as for your pain, there is a medical hospital here but we have no transportation for you and I think they’re closed anyway, however I can get you a bag of ice.» A few minutes later, she plopped two plastic grocery bags of about 5 lbs of ice in the middle of our dinner table! THUD!!! Not even a ziplock bag. No apology was given. She seemed like she was going through the motions but also appeared agitated with me. I’m sure I didn’t look happy but GOOD GOD… your elevator killed my neck and I’m scared about how long this pain will last. No one ever called or left a note to check on me. I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow for my neck that’s still in pain… thanks Edelweiss! I get that accidents happen… there was a mechanical failure… but how you respond to it speaks volumes of your establishment. They only closed down the elevator when I asked them to. There was no apology from the security manager. No follow up to see my condition. This was no hair in my food snafu… this was an elevator malfunctioned now my neck hurts snafu. They should have been more considerate and acted upon it.
To an insult to injury, I must admit the food was awful at the Market Station. The steak was a hard rubbery mess. All the food was over salted. I swear the chef must be an 80 year old with no taste buds left. Just skip the buffet lines and head straight to the guy making burgers. Add an egg, too. This was semi good. Same goes for the breakfast buffet. Skip the buffet and head straight to the guy making eggs. Can’t really mess that up.
Also, if you like watching moms and kids still in their pajamas coming down for breakfast, this is the place for you. There’s no dress code apparently?
There is a shining light. The kids daycare for 5 years and up is great. Kids Night Out was the highlight of my kid’s vacation. For $ 25 for the first kid, and $ 20 each kid thereafter, they get a whole night of various fun. My kids had a blast night sledding. They couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they had. They were so eager to go again the next night that they skipped dessert and wanted to head straight to daycare. So either the daycare was phenomenal or dessert at the buffet sucked… my guess is it was both.
I contemplated whether I regretted coming here. I did manage to have fun that weekend thanks to my sweet husband who kept massaging my neck. Honestly, I wished I had never come. The neck area has very delicate muscles, nerves, and joints. To traumatize that area could be months of therapy. Every time I pick up my daughter, or sit down on the couch or lay in bed, I feel the pain. I have to careful of how I move my neck or else I’ll feel that spiky pain. To know that the folks at Edelweiss just plain didn’t give a *^$% and let the elevators run as normal was not only careless, but idiotic. I’m glad they finally shut down the elevators to work on it. It reopened on Sunday. I’m hoping this doesn’t happen to any guests ever and if it does, I hope their protocol will be better

Great for junior enlisted not so much for higher tier categories. Spend your money at a local gasthaus or hotel. Ski school is good for kids. All the tours you can do on your own. Restaurants were ok. Better to eat in town. Sports bar ok for an evening drink.

I absolutely loved this hotel when I stayed in Germany. I stayed here for 4 days with family.
It is in a wonderful location in the German Alps! There where many activities and sights to see are driving distance. The view of the Alps mountainside had from our room was beautiful!
The room was clean and the staff was very nice. My only complaint and its not a big one if you’re familiar with Europe… there was no AC in the room. We were there during the end of summer (August) and it was hot and humid so it was uncomfortable. We did ask for a fan and it helped. Fortunately for us the weather changed after a day and it cooled down and rained.
The food was good and they offered WiFi and the connection was awesome!
If you have an opportunity to stay here go for it.

Definitely a place to stay in if you are near this area and have eligibility.
The rooms were very spacious. Beds are very comfortable. Our room did not have any minifridge. Indoor pool and outdoor hot tub that feels especially good on a chilly night. There are also laundry facilities to use for a small fee. There is dining on site, buffet style. The resort offers a good number of tours to various areas such as the Castle, Innsbruck in Austria and many other places.
There is a commissary, gas station, and exchange that is within a reasonable walking distance.
The views are amazing and hope to return to try out the skiing/​snowboarding.

I’m giving 4 stars but its closer to 3.5 in my opinion. There’s great things about the facility and then there are areas that are lacking.
The rooms are very comfortable and well maintained. The layout provides optimum views from most rooms I would assume. Most rooms appear equipped with balconies and that is a plus. Free wifi and parking are great too. Breakfast options on site are good but not great. They had an omelette station and that was my mainstay. My wife preferred the Starbucksish coffee and sandwich shop downstairs. They serve Starbucks coffee but it’s not a full up Starbucks. Lunch was very limited during our stay and I’m guessing thats because it’s an off season and they don’t have the staff to run all of their facilities. Nice sports pub downstairs with a limited menu. Mostly pizza and wings.
There are not a lot of onsite activities or play areas for small kids. My daughter enjoyed the indoor pool and I liked the gym, but it would be nice if they had a kid’s indoor play area.
The views are good but not mesmerizing. The location is fantastic and overall this town is gorgeous.

The hotel is in a good location with great views. Rooms, food and service is mediocre at best. Don’t ask for a late check out unless you would like to be threatened by the front desk that «they have your card on file and will not hesitate to charge you an additional $ 60 if you aren’t out of your room by 11 sharp». The customer service has much room for improvement. I think next time I visit Garmish, I will stay at a local German hotel which includes a yummy breakfast for the same price as a basic room here.

Sitting in the Lodge while writing. A couple things to note about this place (that were not clear to us when doing research):
1. The view is not a joke. You’re looking at the Zugspitze out of your room window.
2. This is America. In fact, this is a full-​up DoD installation. All dollars, no accents, very few German employees, buffets, gate guards. If you’re at home looking to visit authentic Germany, don’t stay here. If you’re in Germany looking to visit home, great spot. That being said, it’s a smart way to save a few bucks on a week or two type trip.
3. Lodge is very Vail-​esque. Big fireplace centerpiece, logs, gorgeous. Great views of Garmisch Classic ski runs off of the observation deck in the lobby.
All their employees have been great — typically post-​college American kids who wanted to spend some time abroad. Mostly smart and helpful.

Little on the expensive side. If u get a room in the 100’s be prepared to walk. The upstairs restaurant (s) is pretty good. There are amazing things to see nearby. The tour to Neuschwanstein is easier than driving urself… And maybe it was just our wing of the hotel but those towels. Yikes. Nothing like drying off with sandpaper. If u wanna be a real resort u have to get nice towels. Maybe robes. So, everything was above average except towels– bring one from home

Exactly what one would expect from a state run resort. Check in was not so painful but as many people arrived to check in there was only one clerk so as you can expect, that process took one hour. The restaurants were closed. They did have a bar with bar food that offered very high fat, bland and overpriced but at the same time cheap cheap food. For two people having one beer and one dish a piece the price came to $ 60. The downstairs DFAC (dining hall for the POGS) was exactly like any DFAC yet triple the price. All the food is served in open containers so by the time it made it to your plate it was dry and cold. There is an omelet bar if you have time to wait for three eggs and a limit of two toppings. The room was comfortable and decent and the water pressure was awesome. The staff, all high school or college kids on break, were polite and generally helpful. DO NOT FORGET ANYTHING. There is no store to buy simple things such as Tylenol PM, toothpaste etc. There is an AAFES shopette but hardly ever open and not close to the lodge. There is low speed internet. Overall it’s nice but not for an E5 or above, since there is a scale of prices based on rank the higher up you are the more expensive. At the price I paid we could have stayed and one of the German hotels closer to the slopes. In addition most of the clientele let their children and toddlers literally run free unsupervised. Pajamas, sweatpants and slippers was the most common dress among ALL patrons at the hotel. Very tacky and depressing.

A great time in a very comfortably American lodge. The surroundings are gorgeous and there are a lot of great activities in both winter and summer. If you are uncomfortable with going out into a foreign country, this can be a great first step. Provided that you are American of course.

We were so happy that the staff was able to find us a room in late October. The place was booked up, but we were able to stay one night. Military retirees can stay on a space-​available basis, and you can call 24 hours in advance to check availability. The buffet is decent, and the young people who work at the hotel were very friendly.

While I lived in Garmisch I never had the opportunity to stay here but I used to go for all the events they would have. When the down hill skiing World Cup came around they had Lindsey Vonn and Brodey Miller signing autographs. They always seem to have something interesting going on.

We stopped in here on our way to Italy. We were here last year so we figured why not again? We had some great sandwiches, fries and good water. Bill was cheap and we were not arguing that. Great place to always stop by and eat and/​or drink. lol

Great place to visit and a real luxury for military and their families. 3 restaurants are convenient and offer nice variance of food depending on what your mood is. Don’t be afraid to try something in town a well. Grab a day tour and get to see some culture and history. If you have a large group and it’s not too cold I would also recommend the deluxe cabins. They have a large indoor pool which can get crowded at times and a heated outdoor pool that my kids love. It is for adults only after 8pm. Both pools close at 10pm. Gift shop is quaint and has a few neat things for purchase as well as some necessities. Last time we visited in Dec of 2012 they had added free internet for rooms compliments of the VFW. I highly recommend a visit during the Christmas season. They have sleigh rides and the lodge is decorated with Chritmas decoration with occasional visits by St. Nick himself. I have been visting Edelwiess for the past 8 years for around 6 – 8 visits.

We decided to stay at Edelweiss, because it was our first mini-​Germany-​trial trip and it felt safe because it is an American owned and occupied resort. We knew that they took «regular» credit cards and had many activities and options for us.
Our room was a Junior Suite. It was spacious, clean and perfect for us. It had a balcony, mini fridge and a large bathroom. I would suggest, though that they put microwaves in the rooms.
There are some tips and things to know before you go to Edelweiss.
We arranged for a babysitter though the hotel facebook page (available through reservations) and arranged for an awesome sitter to take care of our two kids. The babysitters work at the hotel (DOD ID holders) and live in the housing area, they are college graduates and our particular babysitter was super awesome with our kids. She worked for us the two night we were there.
We had reservations and did a beer brewery tour through the MWR and what an experience! It was an awesome date night experience, we tried many different beers, beer schnaaps and Bavarian cuisine that was SOOOO yummy! The huge benefit was the transportation too and from the hotel for this excursion was provided. We made some friends from other military bases, we filled up on delicious beer brewed right there in-​house and we ate food that I could never re-​create at home.
We also got my husband and son skiing gear and headed over to the private, American military only ski area called «the backyard». It was a perfect area for teaching a 4 year old the skiing fundamentals. But as my husband quickly learned, our son was not as eager to learn from his father as he was more into rolling on the ground and playing with the snow. We determined that at this juncture our son would do better in skiing school with «real» instructors.
We came back to the hotel and enjoyed the swimming pool, the staff at the swimming pool were not as cheerful as the rest of the staff at the hotel. There is a café and shop that lead into the pool and I am not sure if the worker was annoyed of having to buzz people in and out, but she was certainly not very pleased to be standing there doing her job. The hotel was great because there were many other children our son’s age and the pool is laid out in a kid friendly way, offering many shallow areas to play in.
My husband and I left the children with money for dinner and a sitter (the same one from the night prior) and we headed out to Garmisch to check out the Christmas decorations, the mini-​tiny Christmas market and shopping. The stores in Garmisch are in an area where there is only foot traffic. We found some amazing stores, some familiar store (H&M) and some yummy chocolate shops. We spotted a bunch of different neat looking restaurants but we had already had plans to eat at the hotel restaurant.
We came back (purchases in tow!) and headed to dinner at the hotel. It was great because we spotted the babysitter and kids walking around the hotel room (despite having a Junior Suite, it was still trying to have to be sequestered to a room with two kids). We at at Pullman Place. You can make reservations online through Open Table, it was my impression that it could be pretty fancy when you use Open Table. The meal was good, not great. It was mediocre. I appreciated the convient location and the fact that we did not have to drive after enjoying cocktails, but I do not think I would go there again.
Over all the trip was a success, especially for our first trip outside of our home nest.

Rooms should have microwaves — it is painful to have to heat a baby’s bottle in the middle of the night downstairs in the lobby restaurant — that is walking down two long hallways, going down 3 floors, microwaving said bottle and then the return trip… meanwhile I am either carrying the screaming, hungry baby through the halls at 2 in the morning or my husband is holding said rascal in the room. Either way it’s a major disruption

As a rule I don’t Unilocal businesses on military installations, but I’m breaking it for Edelweiss.
I’ve seen the ads on AFN, and I figured there was no way it was as nice as it seemed, but after spending four idyllic days there I can say with confidence: it’s better.
It really is surrounded by soaring peaks and lush green pastures. The hotel property is impeccably maintained, and the service from everyone I encountered was kind and professional.
If you run out of something, it won’t feel like you are taking time out of your trip when you are on a charming tree-​lined stroll past a river to get to the PX. Nothing about Edelweiss feels military, and you will definitely be able to relax and feel like you have gotten away from all the stresses of work. There are a ton of seasonal activities to enjoy, as well as spa treatments and dining. If you get overwhelmed, do what I did, show up and pick something from the daily tour schedule. They also have a free photo service, so get your picture taken.

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to stay here, do it. Compared to the other hotels in the area Edelweiss is a 4 star hotel with a 1 star price. Good luck reserving a room during the winter months though, but its and amazing place to stay all year round. The steaks at Pullman place are the best I’ve ever had anywhere in the world.

The buffet restaurant was fair, but not fantastic, but the more upscale restaurant adjacent to this one was very good! Food was perfect, but the noise level was ridiculous, due to a small child screaming throughout the whole dinner… had to ask the management to speak with the parents, but couldn’t be too hard on them as this is a big resort/​retreat for military families, some who haven’t seen each other in a long while :)
The charming town with all it’s beautiful architecture, and quaint little cafes, is but a short distance from the resort if you want to venture outside the property.
You can also book many different tours from the resort, including the tram that travels 10,000 vertical feet, up Zueckschpitz. You are also within driving distance to several castles, and also a short drive to Austria… very good location for venturing out on day trips ;)
The service personnel are very friendly and helpful.

I love the location of this place and how near it is to so many activities and attractions. It has so much to offer during the winter and summer. The service is really helpful and friendly. The 3^rd time there, I spent New Year’s here with my husband and I’ve never seen anyone throw such an amazing fireworks show until here. The buffet is alright and a bit expensive for what they have to offer at times. zuggy’s base camp restaurant is usually busy, but we managed to come in just at the right time before the line and yet the service is a bit slow. We had an amazing view facing the mountains and our rooms were huge for just us two. The price is a lot cheaper than what most hotels nearby were to offer. It would be nice if breakfast was included, but I know that they have specials when breakfast is included. The hot tub is outside and is normally crowded with drunks, and the pool is filled with kids and is not that deep. Definitely a lot of tours to check out which is offered throughout the year.
