To speak of an institution–«mamas» has been on Knutsford Terrace for as long as anyone could remember. This is one of the earliest bars that settled onto this peculiar part of Tsim Sha Tsui, which resembles something built on a platform as an afterthought. Nonetheless bars and restaurants have sprung up and this is very much the place to go to. Mamas is different in the sense that though the bars around it(with the exception of Big tree which has decided it will go its own way) have evolved and gone for a somewhat a more classy approach; Mama’s retains that same flavor which is more casual, seedy yet nice sort of way. The prices have also remained reasonable all these years which is, I suspect, why after all these years it still has so many followers. On any given evening during happy hour you will be hard pushed to find a table for four and the waiters are almost certainly too busy to take your orders. Be prepared to wait to be served. There is a wide range of drinks to choose from so choice will not be a problem– how much you can stomach is another thing. Beers seem to be the most popular choice here especially if you sit outside. its not the most comfortable bar in the world as the chairs are a little too high and too hard(unless you sit outside which is too hot) — that’s part of the charm I suppose. its the atmosphere you go for and the fact is everybody knows where it is so you don’t have to pick anyone up to come here. Its like that old pair of trousers– its not comfortable, its not stylish; somehow it just feels right when you put it on.
