Right near my hotel in Wan Chai, this seemed to be the most lively spot on the walk back from the MTR. Lively it was. I must’ve seen at least 2 asses, 3 penises, and 1 boob. Serious. Upon walking in there were just drunk people dancing on the bar with music blasting and drinks everywhere. Dare I say, I may have found the equivalent to my dearest 13th Step in New York City — all Carnegie’s needed was a couple of beer pong tables. Instead, the long list of cocktail shots made due. It must’ve been a chart of 150 different ones O_O Not only that, but I noticed behind the bar that they had Victoria Bitter bottles for about the equivalent of $ 5USD. This is my favorite beer from Australia and impossible to find in the US, so I was geeking out quite a bit. I proceeded to order that the rest of the night… It seemed to be mostly study abroad students in here with a random sprinkling of locals, probably just around for a cheap drink. The staff were also extremely good sports about everything, especially considering much of the nudity that night was not the good kind(and likely burned their corneas). The people watching was top-notch, including what looked to be a few awkward dates and a girl my sister and I dubbed, ‘lonely asian girl’. She was by herself at a table, seemed to get drunk by herself, got hit on by several guys, danced around awkwardly for a bit, then finished the night sitting down and giggling to herself. God bless her soul.

On my recent trip to Hong Kong, my friend who traveled with me said her friend who studied in HK as an exchange student highly recommended coming here for Wednesday night, which is Ladies night — free champagne for all ladies after 9PM. We obviously arrived much too early — 7:30PM. It was filled with older people just chilling after work. Drinks were cheaper at that time(before 9PM) — only 50HK for a draft Guinness beer. We ordered some fries on the side and it came on a cute dim sum brown plate. The«fun» really begins after around 11PM. This is when people decide they want to dance on the bar and I guess it’s accepted by the bartenders/owners/whatnot. Beware — guys start stripping off their shirts, girls try to jump onto the bars with heels(many failing and falling to their near deaths), and popping American styled music loud in the air. Like other reviewers have mentioned, be wary of your belongings here. Located in the Wan Chai district, it is filled with more locals and not quite as «safe» as the touristy clubbing district Lan Kwai Fong. Being super packed, your cell phone/wallet can be easily stolen. Overall I had a fun night but didn’t quite love the atmosphere as much as I did at the Lan Kwai Fong district — which reminded me of a better Vegas ;)

Carnegie’s is one of the many bars along Lockhart Road in Wanchai. My friends and I decided to go there the other day because we were just done buying some things from the nearby computer mall and were craving a drink. Carnegie’s isn’t hard to find because there’s a pretty huge sign for it. The bar is very dimly lit, which kind of made me feel a sleepy just coming in. It was pretty packed, mostly with middle-aged men drinking their after-work beers. We were led to the couch area all the way in the back. On the upside, we had our privacy and it’s undoubtedly more comfortable than sitting on the bar stools, but on the downside, it was extremely hard to get the attention of the waiters! We often had to walk up to one of the waiters because it was just impossible for them to notice us in that corner. It was also a little stuffy where we were sitting — the air conditioner reached us just barely so it wasn’t very cool. Carnegie’s probably has the most extensive cocktail and shooters menu I’ve ever seen. My friends and I just settled for beer though because I had seen from their website online that 6−7pm is their ‘crazy hour’, where standard drinks, including bottled beer, are $ 19 and draught beers are $ 25. But when we clarified with the waiter, we were told that the prices were actually $ 25 and $ 29 respectively, meaning that the promotion on their website hadn’t been updated. The drinks came pretty fast despite the bar being quite busy. We sat there for a little over an hour before heading for dinner. Overall, I thought the ‘crazy hour’ deal, albeit more expensive than before, was pretty worth it for a quick drink. However, I was a little disappointed that because of where we were sitting, it was frustrating that we couldn’t get the waiters to notice us and had to walk up to where they were to order something.

Wan Chai, that area associated largely with strippers, drinking, and sin. Many a person has vowed never to return after a rowdy night gone wrong, myself included, only to find themselves on Lock Hart Road’s doorstep the following weekend. Somewhere along the street, in the section of more reputable establishments, is the popular bar Carnigies. I say popular because depending on which time of the day/week you enter it’s front doors you’ll find people of all sorts of backgrounds and ages. When I visit Carnigies it is usually after a rugby match on a Saturday night or for Ladies night on a Wednesday. Both nights are fun, cheap drinks, top forty pop songs on repeat and a bar worthy of dancing on — literally. When the staff deem it suitably full they bring out the bar support, these big U-shaped metal poles provide aid for those wanting to dance on the bar and otherwise make a fool of themselves. Which would be me on most nights I’m there. All the feet attempting to move in time with the music makes ordering a drink a precarious affair, yet for some strange reason I’ve not once in my five years of going there seen a drink destroyed because of it. Some mysterious are better left unsolved, perhaps. A younger crowd tends to exploit the Ladies night, probably due to their lack of pocket money. There are the odd older man/woman hanging around on those nights but that’s probably more to do with a lack of morals. On a Saturday night it’s more of a hit or miss thing. I can never predict the outcome until 12:30am — half an hour into $ 10 Jaeger shots. If the bar hasn’t filled up by then it never well. If, on the other hand, the Jaegers are doing their trick I know I’m in for a wild night I’m probably going to regret. The parts I remember, anyway!

If you go ask any exchange student which one is their favourite club in Hong Kong, I guarantee you 90% of them would say Carnegies. I believe it is because of word of mouth… every semester, you will find tons of university students coming here hard-core partying. Personally, I have never been here before 11pm as the fun begins afterwards. It is the most popular hangout here as the drinks are not pricey at all and the best part is you can dance ON the bar(if you are drunk enough), I have actually seen quite a few drunk dancers holding onto the brass railings as they could barely stand… anyways, the atmosphere is great and when you put alcohol, students and loud music together, this is what you get. The décor is rather American styled filled with music posters, rock and roll memorabilia and framed photos. There is nothing fancy about this place so you can also get in wearing flip-flops and shorts. They do have certain promotions like Ladies night on Wednesday, HKD$ 10 dollar Vodka shots on Tuesday and stuff… and also… there is a rather h*dden place inside… anyway, you can explore it all once you are there. This place is CRAZYPACKED so keep your eyes on your belongings and since this is located in the red light district, make sure you have someone to accompany you in case you get too drunk. It is never fun to wake up and find yourself all alone with your wallet gone. One of the picture was taken few years ago as some students at a university designed a T-shirt for all to go to all those bars and clubs in one night as checkpoint… BESTNIGHTEVER and you can see how popular this place is.
