They offered 2 varieties of crab — chili or peppercorn. I meant to order chili, but ordered peppercorn by mistake. I’m glad I did! The sauce was incredibly flavorful without being too spicy and the sweet, tender crab soaked up the sauce wonderfully. If you go, the crab needs to be ordered at least a day in advance. Had some cool drink names too. When you see a drink named«Godzilla», how could you not order it? The Milo was chocolate malt and Horlick was malted milk. I think technically there was supposed to be a scoop of ice cream in there to make it «Godzilla». Ours were topped with whipped cream only, so it should have been called«Dinosaur». Aside from the crab, I would also highly recommend the Black Truffle Egg Tofu. Delightfully earthy flavors and super silky tofu with a crisp exterior.

I’m a big fan of Singaporean food, and one of my all-time dishes is the Hainanese chicken rice. I’ve loved it ever since I was a kid — there’s just something about the fragrant rice and the tender, boneless chicken and the dark soy sauce that I just can’t get enough of. So when my mother, who knows about how much I love chicken rice, told me about Hainan Shaoye, I couldn’t wait to go. This was about three years ago, though I’ve been back a couple times since. The chicken rice here comes with some chicken broth and vegetables. It’s pretty much identical to the ones I’ve had at food courts in Singapore. The chicken has barely any fat stuck to its skin and is boneless, which is great because I can just eat them straight up without having to get rid of the fat and the bones. I’m a really lazy person when it comes to eating — I just want the food in my mouth as soon as possible — so I don’t really like anything that requires me to de-bone or de-shell(is that a word?). The chicken is super soft, and I love the rice too. The rice in Hainanese chicken rice isn’t just ordinary rice — it’s really fragrant and goes really well with the chicken. You can’t have chicken rice without dark soy sauce! It comes with chili too and I don’t really eat spicy, so I don’t add chili to mine. My only complaint is that the rice and the chicken are a little oily, but other than that I really like the chicken rice here! My mother usually orders the laksa. She says that the laksa here isn’t as spicy as the others she has tasted, but is good nonetheless. The food here is generally good and portion sizes are decent, but whenever I am at Hainan Shaoye I always feel that the plates and the utensils are a little oily! But overall, it’s worth giving Hainan Shaoye a chance if you like Singaporean cuisine.
