Place rating: 2 Hong Kong
If there is a dime a dozen of anything in Hong Kong, it’s the Japanese all you can eat sushi establishments. There is literally one every couple of blocks and in this part of Kowloon, practically one in each corner. Aside from having a harder name to remember, Hei Sei Ni Jyu Ni was ultimately more disappointing than it was satisfactory, which is sad considering how much I love junk food sushi. The place feels like a club that’s taken a beating. An awkward mesh of a layout of random tables and booths, with a strong aroma that reminded me of something strangely chemical. The ventilation was bad, but the air was still strange musk in the air, sort of like how an indoor spot feels post BBQ. It was hard walking throught the musk and eventually to a cramped corner area where my group and I filled out the paper check-lists for the different kind of foods. There is cooked, raw, meats, veggies, etc. No shortage of variety. Likely an issue that affects any AYCE spot, the quality was the main deterrent. The fish(salmon, tuna, yellow tail) had this shine to it, which I am going to guess is due to the room temperature. Most of the sashimi was on a block of ice, but was uneventful. A bonus: We were provided with a small board of sea urchin, but even that was fishy. The rest of the food was also disapponting — fried rice, sweet shrimp, and especially the foie gras. On the plus side, one can get a cold drink from the well stocked fridge. Everything from flavored teas to sodas to even beer. The beer alone would help with the deal, quite a few groups nearby were cheering every five minutes with a cold beer. At $ 248/a person during dinner time, that might be the best option after all. Reservations are recommended by the staff, but I’d be wary of recommending this place to anyone.
