People are complaining about this place, but I’m guessing they only ordered one(and only one) thing to try. That’s kind of you on, bub. — EGGTARTS. This was pretty meh all around, I agree with that. The filling was waaaay too sweet and a bit too runny, and the crust was the saving grace(by being average). + PINEAPPLEBUNS. This is where Honolulu Coffee Shop shines. Seriously, this one was rich, buttery, crumbly-topped perfection, even forgoing the iced butter in the middle. I was almost tempted to go back for seconds! I wish there were more near Kowloon or Mong Kok, but it’s worth the trek out here.

Hk$ 8 for an egg tart?!? Wtf is this twice as good as the ones from Happy bakery? Is it even possible to be twice as good as happy bakery down the street? I don’t think so. It is really eggy and creamy, but happy bakery is far flakier.

Read that this place was good for their egg tarts. Therefore made a trip down to grab some. All I can say is, I had better egg tarts elsewhere. And surprisingly, Disneyland is one of the place to go for dim sum and egg tarts. Anyway back to this egg tart. The crust is not as what some reviews said. There’s NO layers. Just 1 mashed up layer. The egg custard is too sweet. All I can taste is sweet and no egg. If you are craving for any egg tarts, this may do. But if you want good egg tarts or if you are watching your weight, save the calories for better egg tarts. Don’t waste stomach space and calories on this egg tart.

The quality here has dropped in recent years. The food is either too oily or too salty or both. Suggest to avoid this place for your average meal, and if you’re looking for egg tarts there are better ones to be found in Wan Chai.

I had heard that Honolulu Coffee Shop had good egg tarts, so I took this opportunity to have an egg tart and have lunch. I had the preserved vegetable with pork with rice noodle. I thought this tasted pretty good. Flavor was nice. If I wanted some simple noodles and was in the area, I would return for this. For the egg tart, I was actually a bit disappointed. It was $ 9. Pretty much double the price of some places, or nearing double the price of others. Flavor-wise, it was an ok egg tart, not exceptional. It wasn’t anything super memorable to write home about.

I’ve been to the Central branch of Honolulu Coffee, but never this Wan Chai one so I decided to give it a try. After looking at the menu, I remembered why I don’t go there that often — their food is way over priced for what it is. I’m not saying their food is bad, because it isn’t, but It’s not extraordinary and worthy of the 30% markup from other Hong Kong cafes. I had their afternoon tea set for $ 39 and it’s usually $ 29 at other cafes. It was just the typical one with a milk tea, satay beef soup noodle, and scrambled eggs with a bun. They’re famous for their egg tarts, but I also thought that didn’t warrant the $ 9 price tag. If you’re dying for some genuine Hong Kong style café food and don’t mind forking out some extra money then Honolulu Coffee could be a good choice for you.
