Hidden gem tucked away behind a huge car park in a village house compound. Despite the long queue of pilgrims, the food here is excellent — please try their tomato based noodle soup, pineapple bun burger and of coz the Hong Kong style milk tea.

I was introduced to this café by a lifelong Yuen Long resident, who had to use Google maps to find the place. Luckily we were able to go on a Tuesday morning and our wait was all but 10 minutes. For somebody coming from the city, it’s a long trip but very worth it. They can’t seat you very comfortably. we sat 4 in a line across from strangers, and there was no air conditioning. Still worth it. The signature sandwich is like a homemade sweet and savory dream. Take the typical pineapple bun with a sweet sugary topping, and add egg, cheese and tomatoes. It sounds crazy but it’s so delicious. My host got the tomato soup with elbow macaroni which comes with two slabs of pork meat and two wine marinated chicken wings. A very well executed version of the HK classic. The milk tea was tasty too. For non_Cantonese speakers, there are pictures :)

First and foremost, I had to try three times before I could actually eat there. The first time, I got there at 2:30 and the guy said they already ran out of spots for the rest of the day. The second time I went, I went on a Sunday and when I got there, discovered that they’re closed on Sundays –__– They say third times the charm right? So I gave it another shot. We got there just before noon and they guy said they were already out of seats for their morning seating, but we could come back at around 1:30 to try for the afternoon seating that starts at 2:00pm. We accepted the situation and decided to go walk around the Ping Shan village while we waited. We finished roaming at 12:45 and the returned to 華嫂冰室 to check out the situation. The guy asked us what we were waiting for and we told him that he told us to come back for the 2:00pm. He seemed surprised that we actually decided to wait so he rewarded us by seating us then and there! Woot! Because we were seated right before their lunch break, we had to order everything that we wanted at one time. So we got their signature pineapple bun with fried eggs and tomatoes, hot dog bun with corned beef, egg and cheese, macaroni noodles with beef in tomato soup, and instant noodle with fish cakes in preserved egg and cilantro soup. Their signature pineapple bun with egg and tomato definitely lived up to the hype. The crust was crispy and thin. The bottom was fluffy and airy. The yolk of the fried egg was just barely cooked so it wasn’t completely solid yet. The combination of the sweet from the pineapple bun was a nice contrast with the savory of the egg and tomato. The cheese in the hot dog bun was sharp and went well with the corned beef and egg. The tomato soup base was really strong. It was almost as if I was just eating tomatoes. I’m not complaining though because it’s very flavorful. The preserved egg and cilantro soup base was also amazing. I loved that they actually gave you a whole preserved egg. Overall, everything that we had here was fantastic. Would I come and wait again? Maybe not, but I’m glad I got to try the food here.
