Great char siu! Juicy and thick-cut pieces melt in your mouth. The duck was OK, I wouldn’t say that it’s the best I’ve had but it’s decent. But, I can safely say the char siu is THE best I’ve had anywhere though. Tip: Come here before the lunch rush!

Succulent BBQ Pork and rice for $ 28HKD… great deal… most delicious pork for the buck in Hong Kong I experienced in this little roasted meat joint. note the entrance is on Stewart around the corner, not Hennessy like Google and Unilocal list. Entire menu is in Chinese only.

This was prb some of the best food I had in Hong Kong. Came here with 5 buddies all with big apetites. The place is REALLY tight, small tables and small chairs. But the staff made it work. We didn’t know what to order, and the staff did not speak that great english but she hooked us up with a little of everything. The roasted meats were all great, crispy and full of flavor. Great Value, Great food!

OMFG, this place has the phattiest BBQ pork on earth. Nothing, I say, nothing will compare. The HK milk tea here is also off the effing hook. It’s worth a Lipitor or two for a meal here.

Review based on togo order placed around 8:30pm. Grabbed it togo since it was around the corner from our hotel. They were limited on meats offered and ran out of soup for the day. We opted for half a duck, half a soy chicken, and char siu. The char siu was the best of the three. Didn’t really care for the soy chicken and the duck was really fatty. Everything was greasy but still had good flavor to it all. Reasonably priced and quick.

Many years ago, I was a food writer and had a weekly column in Asian Week, a news paper in San Francisco. I learned how to observe all the melodies in a meal. I whet my palate with warm pork bone soup. Next, I excite my palate with crispy pork skin and savory roasted pork. Just as the salted flavors reach a certain climax, I reward my palate with pillowy fluffy rice. Rice should be on the dry side as oppose to mushy. Soy sauce brings out the aroma. Take note, this is not a date place but instead a hole in the wall«let’s just be friends» place.

I came here for the BBQ Pork with rice(叉燒飯) because I read on another review site that this place was good and saw a few tips on Unilocal too, including one from Kevin L with a rumor being that the place is a family business but the next generation doesn’t want to continue so I guess good to see what the fuss is about before there is a serious chance of FOMO: D. The place definitely delivers on that for the BBQ Pork with rice, and is also quite cheap too. But it can get busy at lunch time(good sign that this place is actually good), so try to come a bit earlier or later than the peak periods. I’m not too sure about the overcharging with foreigners part though but I guess you should come along with a local or someone who looks the part(preferably they should be able to speak some cantonese too).

I must have been lucky because they had iberico char siu when I went. Not sure if they have it all the time or if they run out? Just get the char siu. Everything else(chicken and goose) is A-OK at best. By 8pm on a Tuesday, they were sold out of the siu yuk/roast pork and soup of the day, so those seem to be very popular. I got a plate of GOOSE&SOYSAUCECHICKENRICE and a plate of IBERICOCHARSIU&GOOSERICE for $ 57 each. A plate came with about 5 – 6 pieces of char siu, 6 pieces of meaty goose or chicken. It’s not entirely filling if you’re a big eater, so feel free to order a soup/veggie. I saw many ordering wontons as well. Blanched Vegetables are priced at $ 20 or $ 30. The food came fast and with all the yelling in the background, you will feel rushed and cramped dining here. Despite this, if you’re only dining here once or twice, I would still advise you to suck it up and dine-in because takeaway does not taste as good unless you literally live across the street. There’s a bottle of sweet soy sauce on every table with a squeeze top, don’t confuse it with the vinegar in the rounded top which comes out clear. Dress your rice/meat with plenty of soy sauce as you wish. I personally thought it was flavourful enough without. A bite in the char siu was greasy goodness. Juicy, fatty and flavourful with charred edges. I’ve had many many many different types of char siu from all over HK, and of course there’s better, there’s always better ones. Normal char siu can never beat iberico char siu, but it’s also 10x the price! This is as close as it gets without the price tag. The goose on the other hand, was too fatty and nothing special. Yat Lok definitely has a better goose. Soy sauce chicken was mediocre and the skin was soggy. The flavours are there but the texture isn’t. *** Tip: If you don’t know any Chinese, the fail safe is to ask for a plate of char siu + siu yuk(or goose) with rice, or just plain char siu with rice. If you are dining with 2 people, I would advise to get just one type and share. If there’s more of you, you can order just the meats and add rice for $ 6 each. Favourites: Char siu! Meh: Goose, chicken Last words: Get the char siu.

No-nonsense local hole-in-the-wall gem. I eat there at least a couple of times on every trip to Hong Kong. The menu can be overwhelming, but keep it simple and you can’t go wrong. Just order the usual like the locals do — the soup of the day plus a combo plate of three meats with rice. Dee-li-cious!

It’s not the best I’ve had in HK but sure is pretty good and way better than anything in the states. For that, it’s 5 stars. Yes it is very cramp but service is fast and they want you to get out fast because there’s a line. Roast goose, fatty cha siu and siu yook. All on point. I like the extra roasting jus in a bottle all you can squeeze on your rice. Soup noodles not bad too. Very hot tasty soup. Shrimp raw noodles.

Heads up if you’re looking for this address and can’t find it. It’s actually around the block on Stewart! It was because of a Unilocal review that we finally managed to locate it after doing a couple of useless Google searches. It’s true; they will overcharge foreigners. It was blatantly obvious that they did so. The prices are up above and even though we can’t read it, the price denominations plus looking at other customers’ bills. We got a trio of meats: the roast pork, BBQ pork, and the roast duck. The BBQ pork was my favorite. The roast pork had a really crispy skin, not like hard crispy like the ones found in the States. It was kind of salty for some pieces, but one was great(just one though :(sadly). The roast duck tasted as expected. Don’t forget to get some lemon tea on the side! They don’t add too much sugar, which is great.

I understand that sometimes people overcharge foreigners, but do you have to be so OBVIOUS about it? We shared a table with two locals, and they seemed confused about our bill. They definitely charged us 120HKD when it should have been 95. Aside from that, the meat was pretty good, but nothing much better than what I’ve had elsewhere. The BBQ pork was my favorite, with the roast duck coming in at second. The Roast pork had a perfectly crispy skin, but the meat was just way too salty.

I wasn’t concerned with the reviews I read for Joy Hing as I saw it featured on Anthony Bourdain’s the layover Hong Kong episode and was convinced I had to witness this place for myself to appreciate the hype. This is a very tiny place with 4 chairs per table. I was with 3 others so we were seated in the very back at our own table. It was tight, loud and not too much room to move around while eating. I was absolutely amazed watching people coming in & out and enjoying what they were eating. Lots of activity, workers bringing in large buckets of cooked meat to the front section where the men chopped and assorted the meals being ordered. A women stood in the middle of the tables directing people to seats and orders to the kitchen and making sure people were being well taken after. I ordered the char Siu with white rice. Very good. I wanted more but we were headed out drinking that night and didn’t want to over eat. My friends had combinations of Pork, Duck and Chicken and they all said it had amazing taste. The price was the best part, just about $ 20.00USD for 4 people to eat. The is a very small place with lots of activity and usually crowded so come in with an open mind and enjoy the best of what this unique place has to offer which are there roasted meats. Definitely a must visit for a unique one of a kind experience. You will be glad you came.

Not a huge fan. Walked in post lunch crowd, the waiter dude was trying to sell us on a char siu rice plate, which while famous, seemed like he was trying to move the«daily special» slow mover, if you know what I mean; most chinese bbq places have so much variety it’s hard to say that everyone would want char siu vs duck vs chicken vs pig… but, I bit, and asked for 1 char siu rice and one siu yuk rice. I noticed some people with noodles and soup, so I asked for a soup as well. The char siu was dried out and looked like it was from one of the leanest pieces and was no better than takeaway«char siu» that gets thrown into the pork fried rice; nothing like the glistening photos of perfectly roasted pork on IG and the blogosphere. The siu yuk that I ordered turned out to be roast suckling pig, wasn’t that great, extremely fatty(even for chinese bbq) and poorly chopped with the grain of the meat. Admittedly i was expecting roast pig belly with the crispy puffy skin, not the smooth roast suckling pig type of meat. The soup was typical pork broth, with carrots and watercress in it, actually not bad although a little greasy… don’t expect consommé. Since this was like zOMG rated by, well, everyone and everything, and seeing some random cook off the street wearing dirty kitchen whites now sitting in front of us, we decided to try more food in the hopes that maybe we were missing something or just got a bad batch. Plus, I have been known to eat half a kilo of crispy pig belly in a sitting or two; by US standards I don’t consider these portions to be that big, and noticed a lot of peeps with noodles/soup/greens/side of meat to make a more complete meal. The random cook across from us got a plate of steamed chicken/bak jaam gai with ginger/spring onion oil, and crispy pork belly on rice, so I pointed it to our waiter and asked for that, in my best attempts at extremely poor cantonese, They delivered in under 30 seconds some more… roast suckling pig on a small plate with no rice. Our new cook friend got indignant at them and told the waiter to get a chicken/roast pork belly rice, which we finally received. The chicken was typical chinese steamed/poached, the roast pork belly was marginally better but nothing spectacular(and still not with that puffy crispy skin with layers of fat). Finally, while I was fine, my wife totally got sick after eating. We were traveling so I will give joy hing the benefit of the doubt that it was not the culprit, plus it didn’t seem that dirty by $ 30HKD/plate standards. I am not sure if we came at a bad time, if I should have asked for an english menu to be more clear/specific, if they’re biased against bananas like me, or maybe this is the classic downhill trajectory that comes when restaurants are overblogged/overrated? you could say«what more should I expect from the price» but the quality just isn’t there, especially for a HK bib gourmand resto. tl;dr extremely fast and rushed, shared tables, mediocre roast meat, chilli oil and extra light soy sauce will help if you’re not used to eating plain rice with the meat

It is not located on Hennessy Rd. It’s around the corner two doors down on Steward Rd. Very small, busy, and loud. But good A.C. so you wouldn’t feel too cramped. We ordered the combo plate that came with goose, duck, pork, and a really crispy skin pork. All the meats were every moist and had great flavor but my favorite was the crispy skin pork. The skin seem like I was crunching down on thin dissolve in your mouth glass. Just awesome! They have side dishes of steamed veggies and rice and some beef soups. But I am coming back for all their roasted meats. Cash only and busy like I said but very friendly service and great roasted meats!

Once you negotiate your way past the countless drug stores, sneaker joints and hooker dens of Wan Chai, consider yourself fortunate if you’ve stumbled upon Joy Hing. Featured on Anthony Bourdain’s layover, you might think«just another roasted meat hole in the wall» at first glance. But what you get is the most well prepared and succulent plate of meat you could ever wish for. The place is tiny, and lines allegedly get pretty long, but I wandered in at 3:00 one Friday afternoon, got seated right away, and had the not-to-be-missed goose and barbecued pork. This was my first experience with roasted meat stands in HK. I’ve tried about a half dozen since and I’ll tell you with all confidence, none are quite as good as Joy Hing. The meats were tender and perfectly cooked with just the right crispness to the skin and char on the edges. Best of all, it’s eye-poppingly inexpensive. But when they’re out of each meat, they’re out, so if you want any shot at the suckling pig or goose, don’t try wandering in after 9:00 or so and expect that.

This is the quintessential HK experience. It’s jam-packed for lunch so you squeeze in next to some strangers and order as soon as your butt hits the seat. The food comes out as quickly as they can plate it. I truly believe that this is one of the most efficiently run businesses on earth. I ate here twice during my two days in HK and had the roast pork, char siu, and the steamed chicken. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted.

Joy Hing Roasted Meat is a well known cantonese BBQ place. I love their BBQ pork, it’s just perfect. The goose and chicken are good, but the BBQ pork is the must have here. The combo comes with rice and sauce on the side. This is a tiny hole in the wall, but they churn out amazing roasted meats.

The first time I came I wasn’t overly impressed and was trying to figure out what all the hype was about. The first time I came, I had roast pork over rice and they added their sauce on top. I felt it was salty and quite fatty and generally I don’t prefer having sauce on top of my roasted meats so it just didn’t do much for me. I was in the area for a doctor’s appointment so I decided to try again. As I was browsing pictures beforehand, I was already salivating and super excited. This time I ordered the Roast Goose and BBQ Pork over rice($ 57), and made sure to ask for no sauce. The worker there made sure to let me know that if I chose duck instead of goose it would only be $ 27, but I had already decided beforehand I wanted to try the goose. It was great that he warned everybody ordering the goose that they could get the combo with the duck for $ 27(I think non-combos also cost the same at $ 27). I also got a soup, too. Soup: I thought it tasted fine. Getting soup from Chinese restaurants always gives me that homemade nostalgic feeling. I would get the soup again. Goose: I thought the goose tasted fine. To me, goose tastes like a meatier version of duck, but was fine for me. Personally may not be worth the $ 30 to change from duck to meat since I find them similar. For others apparently they know better than me and can taste more of a difference, so unless I feel like having a change of pace, I am fine with sticking with duck. BBQ Pork: This is where the winner was. The pork was soooo juicy and very good flavor and level of sweetness. The edges were a bit charred, but in a good way that gave the BBQ Pork more flavor. The meat was a little fatty but I think it may have been needed so that the pork would be juicier. I feel like I still have moments when I crave for that BBQ Pork. This is a big deal, because generally if I have the option at a roast meat place, I usually pick roast pork, but not in this case. Tip: It does get quite crowded at lunch, so you may have to try a non-peak time to reduce the wait.
