I wouldn’t allot any more than half a day for this attraction, but as with any popular tourist spot, go early. I’d arrive as soon as it opens, which if I recall was either 9 or 10AM. By the time we arrived there were already lines almost all the way to the bus station. Taking the gondola over is probably the most scenic way to do it, but I’d avoid the crystal cabin as the lines tend to be longer due to the fact that there’s probably 3 – 4 normal cabins for every crystal one. ALSO, if you can do it, buy tickets online and bring the vouchers with you. There’s a separate voucher line that’s definitely shorter. The ride to the Big Buddha is actually longer than you’d think– probably 15 – 20 min. Once you get off there’s not too much to do other than to hike up to see the Buddha. No need to opt for the veggie meal with the monks. It’s probably not that good.

It’s just another typical touristy attraction, nothing ancient or historical — just aimed at tourists spending money on souvenirs and restaurants. Overall still a fun day out and worth a visit.

We took the 360 crystal cabin go all the way to see the largest seating Buddha in bronze. Recommend getting the all inclusive tickets which include the crystal cabin, bus tour for the fishing village and boat tour to see pink Dolphins by the shore. Definitely a breath taking view for the Buddha and very spiritual place to visit. The overall view make you appreciate the architecture, how did they build a temple and transport all the material up on the mountain?!

Hong Kong review #2 Covering nearly 57 sq miles(147 sq km), Lantau is almost twice the size of Hong Kong Island. But unlike the smaller, more densely populated Hong Kong island, over 50% of Lantau is designated as national parks and has a large trail system for hikers. You will find many different things on Lantau Island, including: Hong Kong Disneyland The Po Lin Monastery and its vegetarian restaurant The 112 foot tall(26 m) giant bronze Tian Tan Buddha Tung Chung Fort(built in 1832) and all it’s history The Trappist Haven Monastery on the east coast Ngong Ping 360 retail /entertainment center and cable car Tai O, a 300 year old fishing village with several hundred houses on stilts. As well as, believe it or not… 6 prisons! Hong Kong International Airport is also here, however it’s technically located on the manmade Chek Lap Kok island, adjacent to Lantau. There is a lot more to Lantau Island, but you’ll just have to explore it for yourself!
