Not sure if I’m warped by my American tastes, but I hated the consistency of the mister softee ice cream. It tasted like soft whipped cream that wasn’t frozen enough and melted instantaneously.

One of my favorite thing to do is get one of these when I was a kid. You can always hear them coming when they play that music: P

Mister Softee(Mobile Softee b/c Mister Softee sounds, you know…) is as Hong Kong as the Star Ferry is to the SAR. In the last 4 years, every time I’m hauling ass to catch the ferry I see the little truck parked outside the terminal not far from the cultural center. I haven’t stopped for a cone for about 25+ years because in my mind, I can«always get it next time,» but because business won’t take me back to HK for at least a few years, I decided to give in to nostalgia and get a Soft Ice Cream. It was late afternoon, slightly muggy — perfect ice cream weather. The truck was at its usual spot. There was no line. Looked like everything was sold out except for the signature soft serve. Totally fine — don’t make me choose. Walked up, traded a tenner for a $ 1 coin and a tiny cone. There’s chocolate inside the sugar cone, just like I remembered, but either the cone shrank or my hands got huge(it’s the latter through the magic of time). The vanilla ice cream tasted like vanilla ice cream. Was it the best ice cream ever? Honestly, I finished it without much thought and it didn’t leave me any lasting memory. Customer service? Like most transactions in HK, you give your money and you get your goods, and that’s perfectly A-OK. Next time, I’ll get ice cream from a cart with the big umbrella. Gonna revisit one childhood memory at a time.
