Sam’s Tailor

Decided to get custom suit made on short trip to Hong Kong. Had heard of the excellent reputation of Sam’s Tailor so contacted them even before my trip. Roshan Melwani responded promptly and we made an appointment for a fitting even before I landed in HK. Store is is very easy to locate (Suggestion: Take MTR instead of cab.)
Was greeted warmly and Roshan gave me his undivided attention for a full hour. He helped me with fabric choice, style details, and offered fitting the next day. They have a vast array of fabric choices, and i did not feel pressured or hurried. All their staff members are personable and, the proof is in how busy their business is. I went to store two more times for fine tuning the fit, and suit was ready as promised within 3 days of my first visit. Am very happy with fabric, fit and cost. Highly recommend this experience! Roshan is great at what he does, and I will be recommending him to friends and family.

I went there in November with a plan to get myself a suit. I made an appointment, had great correspondence with their team on getting a time to come in, and made my way passed all the other tailors begging people on the street with all sorts of deals for their cheap wares. There’s a reason they have to do that and Sam’s doesn’t.
Within 2 days I had a beautiful navy, custom suit. My boss said I looked like James Bond in it. I feel like a million bucks when I have it on. The great part is that it cost me about ¹⁄₅ of the price of my other custom suits. I will continue to go with Sam’s and suggest anyone do the same.

From start to finish the attention to details taken into each suit, shirt or vest is great. Large selection of material, and patterns to choose from. All staff are friendly and professional. When walking into Sam’s you feel like walking into a friends house, warm and friendly.

This place use to be the cream of the crop for international tailors. I visited Sam while he was on his DC road show a couple years ago and the year after that. Both times the shirt sleeves came in wrong. The first time they were too short so I sent them back and they fixed it. The second time they were a little too long but I roll my sleeves up anyway so I wasn’t too worried about it. The fabric quality has always been so nice that it surely compensated.
This past year I contacted Sam’s tailor to see when Sam would be coming back to DC. The first time I didn’t get a response. The second time, they told me to clear my schedule during a certain week and Sam would call me to schedule when he came into town. I cleared my entire schedule and the week came and went and no call from Sam. I contacted their store in HK via e-​mail and no response, either. It’s been a few months and no contact; I guess they didn’t want my business. It’s this type of disrespect that makes a business lose customers permanently.

I’ve purchased 2 suits, a sport jacket and 2 shirts from Sam’s and have only been to Hong Kong three times. The experience is incredible from start to finish — service, price, speed and quality. They make you feel like you’ve been a customer forever. And free beer while you wait?! — how great is that? There are literally hundreds of options for tailoring in Hong Kong, but I would go nowhere else.

I first visited Sam’s while vacationing in Hong Kong two years ago. My husband and I both had exquisite garments custom made by Roshan. It’s amazing to see the difference in the fit of a made to measure shirt or jacket when compared to absolutely anything «off the rack!» Roshan made a navy cashmere blazer I will be wearing forever. The gray flannel slacks will last many years. I love the deep rose cashmere suit and the numerous shirts he made for me. My husband has never looked better!
When it was time to have a beautiful suit made to wear as the Mother of the Bride, you know I looked to only one source — Roshan. I wasn’t in Hong Kong but knew he could use the measurements on file and through emails and a couple of phone chats we could work together to create the perfect suiting for a most special day. The suit arrived in a timely manner and was very reasonably priced as well.
When opening the package, my excitement began to build. There it was; an exquisitely beautiful teal shantung silk suit that was even more stunning than I had imagined it would be! Yes, of course it is a perfect fit!
I would never trust anyone but Roshan to create a design for an important occasion! You will not be disappointed!

Disappointed all around.
Went in there and told them exactly what I needed and when I needed it. After taking measurements, selecting fabrics, etc., they then dropped the bomb on me that they couldn’t deliver when I needed. So, I was forced to run around like a madman to pick up my clothes right before going to the airport.
Second, nothing fits well. The shirts are cut all wrong, the pants are way too big. All in all, I wasted a ton of money on clothes that I’m wholly dissatisfied again and I don’t have any plans to head back to HK soon to attempt to remedy.
Seems like they’re resting a bit too much on their laurels from times gone by.

Getting a suit from Sam’s is an experience from the moment you walk through his doors. There’s no sales pitch, he doesn’t have sleazy guys on the street pulling you in. They’ll walk you through every step from choosing fabrics to the smallest details like button type and stitch pattern. Everyone in the store very professional and can answer any question you could possibly have. I ended up getting two knockout suits that fit me better than my Hugo boss suits and have the same if not, better quality.
I will definitely be back to Sam’s for my next suit.

Back in the summer of 2014, I had a suit made by Sams. I went in for 2 fittings/​measurements, the original and the second one. During the second fitting, I thought it fit pretty well but when I received the final product, it fit OKAY. Not GREAT like I had hoped, but merely okay. Most of the measurements were good, and doesnt fit to awkwardly, but what fits the worst (and is the HUGEST mistake of all) is the arm holes. When I’m PERFECTLY STILL, they sit okay. You cant notice the shoulder pads sticking out too much. But when I lift my arm the SLIGHTEST, I suddenly have these crazy shoulder … wings? or whatever. Mobility is highly limited. Maybe I have to work out my shoulders like crazy to get them to fill it in, but that doesn’t seem like a reasonable request. But besides that minor (yet eyesore) mistake, the quality is a decent build. But in the end, you get what you pay for. I regret not having gone to a supposedly better tailor like W. W. Chan, but also didnt have the money at the time as I was a fresh graduate. But next time I’m in Hong Kong, I wont cheap out.

What can you say about this institution of fine hand crafted clothing? The minute you walk in the door of this smaller than small tailor shop you know you’ve crossed into some place special. The photos on the walls tell the story in pictures. You can find every president, king, prince, celebrity among the vast array of head shots and photos of Sam with them. I have had my suits made here since the day I walked in back in 1998. I don’t even have a need for suits but I continue to have them made here each and every trip. Since morphing into Crazy Bernie several years ago this is my first trip to HK. Tomorrow I plan to walk through those doors and pick out 3 or 4 of the most crazy looking fabrics they can use and have the first generation of Crazy Bernie business suits made. I’m hoping for silver and gold and maybe red sequins. We’ll see. Maybe someday Sam will want want Crazy Bernie on his wall. Just kidding.

I’d hate to say «cheap suits» because these suits and shirts aren’t cheap in construction or quality. They are pretty affordable and inexpensive by California standards. Sam himself helped me pick out a cut and fabric and two matching shirts. Made in about 2 days and delivered by courier to my hotel. You do have to go back for a second or maybe third fitting (which is great as that gets the cut right). The suit… well lets just say the few times I wore it, people were amazed (more so than the amazement that comes from seeing me in a suit).
