The congee is the best in Hong Kong. I like that you can have the option to order different sizes. The ingredients are fresh and well worth the price. It also come with green onion and soy sauce. The ‘fried donut’ is made fresh and you can taste the difference. They also open early around 6:30a so if you are jet lag it is a great place to start your day!

I ordered a chicken congee and it was solid. The congee was simple yet tasteful and abundant in chicken chunks. It’s 34hkd for a large so the price is right too.

This is the best place for 魚腩(fatty fish) congee! The congee is super hot and fish is fresh and with green onion and the combination is awesome. Come on a very cold day and you will sure appreciate the hot congee. They are also known for this pig organ congee so if you are not into those then you might not appreciate it. However, the place is quite small so take out or eat with Max 1 to 2 friends are the best.

Within the realm of congee, this place is world-class instituion. It has been part of Sheung Wan life for decades. There are many choices of different types of congees. The congees are cooked to creamy perfection. The ingredients such as fish, pig liver, etc are fresh and delicious. For some types of congees, they also come with their own special dipping sauce. I almost always order the fish belly congee, which is the specialty here.

This is a HK institution when it comes to congee. Every old timer knows about Sang Kee, and my dad had no problem maneuvering the streets to get to this original store. We got there around 3pm-ish and believe it or not there was a line. We waited less than 10 minutes, but put our order in first as it takes a few minutes to prepare. My parents and I sat down«dap toi» style which means sharing a table with strangers. This is the norm in HK at most of these old school mom and pop establishments. My mom orders pork liver congee and my dad and I had the signature fish belly congee. A bowl of scallion and ginger with soy sauce is provided for each person to use as a condiment for the ingredients in the congee. It is the smoothest and creamiest congee ever, but what bothered me was that the congee got progressively thinner in texture and consistency as I am eating it. However, it’s still one of the BEST congees in HK!

I forgot to take a picture :(best congee I had in Hong Kong. Actually, best congee I’ve ever had. It came out burning hot and rimmed! It was burn your mouth hot from initially receiving the bowl to eating it til the end. It was so creamy, thick and flavorful! I can tell it was cooked for hours on end to get that consistency. The rice was practically broken down to baby food consistency. They blast the ac here, so don’t fear the heat and sweat! They’ll keep you cool while eating the piping hot bowl of congee

By far the best congee I’ve had in Hong Kong. It’s always burning hot and practically spilling over the edges. I usually get the congee with chicken which is marinated in the white pepper and wine. The never skimp on the ingredients and the servers are nice. It’s a little bit more expensive than the average bowl of congee, but I think it’s worth the price hike.

There is something to be said of a place that serves congee, and you are willing to go in the heat of summer in the morning(or at night) to eat this comfort food dish knowing that the brief brisk of a/c while eating scalding hot rice porridge is a balance till you go back out to the humid crazy weather of Hong Kong, yet this is the situation, and we have done this everytime we are in Hong Kong. Full props to this place, as they have two locations on the same block, weird as this may sound, we have been to both, one with no windows, and the other, on the corner of the block, and whichever place you are in, it’s usually got a pack of people who are just needing their fix, or needing a recharge, come as you are, just know you are probably getting the best bowl of congee you have had in your life. Don’t expect to sit alone at a nice table here, it’s a practicaly order your dish, eat, and get out, fast food congee, and everything is in Chinese! One of the favorites that has been mentioned here is the fish belly congee, and this bowl of hot goodness is just that, even for the ‘nomnomnivore’ I was with, who doesn’t even like fish, for her to order this… and devour it like Godzilla running through a small town and wanting more, this says a lot! You think. what. some small shredded pieces of fish mixed in with rice in a pot of water… nope, real big chunks of fish swimming in ever blissful congee with a side of dipping sauce for the big chunks of fish. This is a meal by morning standards, and will keep you tummy warm going through the day. Even for myself, I’m not a crazy fan of ordering this dish back home, but when I’m here savouring each bite it’s pratical bliss, here take my money, and I can see you are taking many peoples money here with practically no noise of talking as everyone is just slurping away! I have had different types of congee here, also go along with a Chinese donut, and a glass of refreshing iced lemon tea, it may not look like much, heck the two shops do not look like much, but there is something about this place that is mentioned on numerous websites and people, and why they keep on coming back, cause they do it right. English menu’s. what is that, even the name it’s not in English, so good luck finding it. but once you are here you have arrived to congee heaven!

It was a cold rainy day, I didn’t bring an umbrella and was all soaked walking on the street thinking about what to eat — and decided to have a bowl of congee to warm myself up. Did some research on Unilocal and found this place. It’s not the easiest place to find. Granted I am not very familiar with HK Island area but this place is located at a small street and the restaurant is also tiny. It only sits about 20 people inside. Nevertheless there is a small café(茶餐廳) next-door by the same owner and when the original restaurant is full, they do ask people to go next-door while they can order the same type of food there. Anyway, saw the word 鯇魚 and my eyes went *bling bling* — one of my favorite river fish and haven’t tried for so long! Fish Belly Fish Ball Congee(鯇魚腩鯪魚球粥): A– The main focus was the fish belly — the fish meat tasted very fresh, very 鯇魚, and they gave a lot of pieces. The restaurant also provided soy sauce and green onion for fish belly, which I think was a perfect match(that’s how you boil fish too right?). Fish ball 鯪魚球 also tasted excellent, fresh and spongy, with an essential green onion aftertaste to it. Congee was hot and not liquidish at all — which I like! Servers were all pretty friendly. Congee has never been on my must-try-food list whenever I visit HK, but after this I’m pretty sure I will stop-by at least once to get a bowl — I mean, there’s so much great food in HK and congee would definitely help neutralizing my digestive system a little bit!

This is probably of the best congee/porridge I’ve had in a restaurant. My favorites are fish belly(魚腩) and chicken porridge. Sometimes I have each on their own and sometimes I have it together. The fish belly are large pieces of fish(with some larger bones) that taste very fresh and then you can dip in the soy sauce/ginger sauce they give you. When you order an porridge with chicken(by itself or in a combo), the congee actually has a different flavor from the other porridges. It has more flavor and seems to be immersed with chicken flavor. The chicken itself was soaked in alcohol before cooking so it gives it quite a unique flavor that I like. Similar to the fish, you can dip the chicken in the soy sauce/ginger sauce. I think all the different porridges have the soy sauce/ginger sauce for you to dip and add more flavor to the contents of your porridge. They give you a lot of meat, so after I usually eat all my fish and/or chicken, there actually isn’t too much congee left. They really don’t try to cheap out on you. At lunch and dinner times, the line here gets pretty long. Either prepare to wait or try to avoid peak times. At lunch, before 12 is best. For dinner, around 6:30 seems pretty good too. If you ever order vegetables also, they provide pretty large portions! P. S. They are closed on Sundays or you will be stuck having to eat something else. Not that there are bad options in the area.

A lot of people have raved about and recommended Sang Kee for their congee. I went in to try their congee and I’m sad to report that I didn’t like it at all. I was really stoked to try one of their fish congees, since they’re supposedly really famous for them. When I went in last night, they sold out of their fish belly congee, so I ordered their fish bone congee instead. The congee is served with a small bowl of soy sauce with ginger and green onions(for the fish). I was really surprised to see that the congee came with a lot of fish — I would say more than half the bowl consisted of the fish! So for fish and congee lovers, this will probably be your panacea. But here’s my problem with the congee: it was so darn fishy! The congee didn’t even taste creamy at all to me(how I like it), it just had a really strong fishy taste. Don’t get me wrong, I love my fish(especially the oily fishes), but just not when the fishy taste overpowers everything. A lot of people have been loving Sang Kee for a long time, so they must be doing something right. I might just be really picky with my fish & congee combination, so hopefully this won’t deter you from going and trying it out(or at least their other items). Note: They have 3 stores along the same street — one for fish noodles, one for beef brisket, and one for congee! Their fish noodle store is pretty good!

For years, Sang kee is very famous for its congee. I have heard so many good things about it and I’m happy that it doesn’t disappoint me. First of all, for those who haven’t had congee before, congee is basically a soupy porridge made with rice and water. It’s something Asians eat when they are sick, trying to be healthy or be kind to their stomachs as it can be easily digested. Plain congee is pretty bland and dull but after adding various ingredients, such as pork, beef, fish, century eggs and chicken, congee can be incredibly delicious and flavorful. I like my congee thick and more to the creamy side and Sang Kee nails it! My all-time favorite is their minced fish ball congee with an extra century egg on the side. They are very generous on their portions with a very affordable price tag. Since their servings are really big, it almost takes me ages to finish a bowl of congee, especially on a hot summer day. Some people may say it’s too hot to have congee on a summer day but I don’t mind sweating while eating, as long as I’m getting a good bowl of congee.
