Gimmicky, but a non-replicable gimmicky. Typhoon shelter seafood is a Hong Kong specialty. Spicy, crunchy, bursting with salty seafresh goodness, the first places you think of are usually the Spicy crab restaurants near Causeway Bay/Wanchai. Shun Kee does the same thing, and to be frank, not as well as the Causeway Bay stores. But, what you get here is the environment. Have you ever imagined eating Typhoon Shelter Crab IN a typhoon shelter? That’s right, at Shun Kee you are eating on a friggin boat, INSIDE the Typhoon shelter! *cue Lonely Island’s Im on a Boat Food is not spectacular but above average. Expect standard dai pai dong style food, soy sauce fried noodles, steamed shrimps, fried cuttlefish balls, or whatever catch of the day there is. They have sets for the less fussy peeps or tourists who have no clue what to order. Costs around HKD300~400 each, depending on which set. A tip is to order in advance, tables/boats are obviously very limited(8 total I believe), and many items on the menu are only available with advance notice. But its worth it during cooler seasons — you will be dining in the sea, boat swaying and sea breeze blowing while you and your friends eat, drink and chat the night away. And needless to say, this is a wonderful place to show out of town friends what Hong Kong can be like, too.
