Out of the two hotels on the beach front(or two I know of, anyway!) Silvermine Resort takes top honors. Not entirely sure how it can be called a resort but it does add a special ring to it especially when seeing the name online and instantly thinking«Oooo a resort!» I like the place, I’ve got to say, not that I’ve ever stayed there. Being a Mui Wo resident means I get to visit the resort any day I wish to have is high-tea buffet — another one of those titles that make you think«Oooo high tea!» It’s a little over priced but the food is good, especially if you’re sitting outside enjoying a nice day right by the beach. If you’re in the mood to relax then Silvermine Resort gives you the opportunity — just try to ignore the really ugly exterior of it and you’ll be fine. They do have a spacious restaurant inside but the food they serve there doesn’t seem to be of such a high standard. I’ve also been to Silvermine Resort on two other occasions when they were hosting parties. There’s a pool behind the indoor restaurant that adds a little something to the party scene and the DJs really like to play their music loud. The problem I have with this is that at any other point during the year the pool is off limits to anyone but the guests. I literally pulled out my money and asked to use their pool… still no. They pointed out, and rightly so, that there’s a beach not one hundred meters that way. I didn’t want to get salty, nor did I want to be crowded at the beach. Instead I walked home in a huff then devised a plan that would see me dig a tunnel under their walls and into their swimming pool. That plan is still under construction.

I don’t really get the Silvermine Beach Resort Hotel. It’s like a giant white elephant on Silvermine Beach, and just seems to be full of mainland Chinese tourists there for the seafood buffet promotion. With Hong Kong Island less than an hour away by ferry, and rates at the Silvermine equivalent to those on Hong Kong Island, I can’t imagine why anybody would be staying there. Having said that though, at the weekends, it does seem to do a roaring catering trade. For me, it’s a pretty safe bet to get a cold drink when I am lounging around on the beach. And by safe, I mean easy, convenient, consistent, and frankly blandly normal. The drinks menu is nothing to write home about, this service is perfectly adequate and perfectly courteous, the food is as you’d expect this sort of hotel. It’s all very normal. To be fair, the dining options are pretty good. There is one restaurant that has a decent selection of Western food including such dishes as; burgers, sandwiches, pasta. And another restaurant, which specialises in Asian seafood, and usually has a buffet on at some point at the weekend. The hotel has a big swimming pool out the back, but as you would expect, beach-goers cannot use this as it is for hotel guests only. You’ll have to use the public facilities on the beach. It is also quite large, which makes it really good for functions away from Hong Kong Island. It’s a rather rather pleasant day out from the office! For me, the main purpose of the Silvermine Beach Resort Hotel, is as a marker point to know that I’ve walked far enough around the bay — sorry!
