Place rating: 3 Hong Kong
Tai Wing Wah has been in Yuen Long for the best part of what anyone could remember, associated usually with its mooncakes, the Chinese restaurant still serves some of the more traditional food that is hard to find in Hong Kong nowadays and it brings back memories for many older residents here. The restaurant is round in an inconspicuous corner of Yuen Long, this place is spread over several floors on an old building and at times it does feel quite claustrophobic. Be prepared to stamp up a couple of flights of stairs as the lift never arrives for some reason. Once inside you will notice that its old– I don’t know when the last renovation was but it is clear that nothing has been done to it for a while. Perhaps that’s some of its charm. On sitting down, you will be handed a menu with some daily specials. Unless you were feeling especially adventurous or you have particular in mind, you will notice that most people seem to order the same dishes here(outside of dim sum hours I mean). The five flavor chicken, the friend eggs with fish innards and the lard with rice are the staples at this restaurant. Most people will understand what the first two are, the first being a chicken marinated with a special sauce(nice), the second being just scrambled eggs with some goo-ey bits in(not for everyone). The last one is actually quite simple– it is lard(in an oil form that comes in a bottle), some soy sauce(you can put however much you like) mixed with plain rice. I don’t need to tell you that its cardiac arrest inducing but my god, its so nice that I want one right now. Go try if you have time. You won’t miss anything if you miss it as the choices aren’t actually that many.
