Wing On Department Store

A local department store, which often has sales and good deals. The set up is a bit messy so you need some patience to find the goodies. Worth it if you want good value merchandise!

Wing On is a better value department store than say Sogo in causeway bay. The staff here will shock you with great English, cantonese and Mandarin. So don’t be afraid to make your mattress, kitchen, etc etc purchases here.

In the 6 months that I’ve been living in HK, this week was the first time I ventured into this department store.
Aside from carrying clothing from low to high end pricing, they also have shoes, outdoor weather/​sports clothing, a small grocery area in the basement floor, pots and pans, and a limited selection of women’s accessories. They also have a small department where they sell household appliances such as heaters, vacuums, kitchen blenders, coffee machines, hair clippers, electric razors, etc.
We bought our two heaters here for this coming winter… Each heater cost us about 1,400 HKD. But they also have smaller heaters that only cost about 300HKD. Of course, depends on what you need and preferences.
Anyway, It’s a good stop if you know exactly what you’re looking for. If you don’t you could possibly end up aimlessly wandering around.
I guess this is the Hong Kong version of JCPenny in the USA but «not really» at the same time.

Wing On is a great local department store, that has been knocking around Hong Kong since 1907. It’s by no means at the glamorous heights of Lane Crawford, or even Sogo for that matter, but it is a solid performer in the department store world.
Wing On has always been known as a more down to earth department store, offering a great variety of clothing, home-​wares and other accessories. Even a quick glimpse on their website will show you the variety of the products they stock both online and in store. From baby strollers and kids tea set, to razors and cool boxes, it is a veritable treasure trove of stuff. Unfortunately, the store does have a reputation of being super local, but it in fact stocks a lot of international brands, especially in the household appliances department.
Like any department store, there are lots of floors, and plenty of square footage. It’s nice and spacious and pleasant enough to browse around.
The products are reasonable priced, and are often discounted on top of that. Always ask for discounts, or in store promotions (this in fact goes with any HK shopping, always ask for a discount!). You may find that they will knock a few % off the price, or guide you through some in store promotions.
A good example was when Mrs L and I bought some towels. First off, they had this super luxurious UK brand, which is popular back home (certainly with the Queen, no less), but not very known, let alone stocked in Hong Kong. Then on top of having the brand, there was a in-​store scratch card lottery to win stuff. We won HKD200 in vouchers to use another time, sweet!
Don’t let a bit of a «local» reputation put you off, yes the store is full of mainlanders, and the staff speak bobbins English, but if you persevere, you can get some great goods at a low cost.
