Only giving 3 stars because its generally disorganised. Stock is quite good though, like all HMVs, if they don’t have some thing its probably hard to find elsewhere.

Possibly the worst HMV of all, with disinterested/arrogant staff members and some of the most bizarre pricing you will ever see. Nice to see the management keeping things modern with their chalk board outside the door, to entice people in. That right there screams high street retail chain. And then they wonder why HMV/Xtra-Vision is going down the toilet for the second time…

Despite closing down for a while and then reopening, plus everyone downloading music these days, I still like HMV for DVDs since they have some great bargains especially in January. They also have a small selection of video games on the lower ground floor(variety is much smaller than Gamestop), and it’s my go-to place for earphones whenever I lose/break them. I bought my Dre Beats here as well, plus some badges and a Frozen poster! They have a lot of boxsets, movies, CDs all sorted by category and alphabet so it’s pretty easy to find what you want. I find it’s great place for buying gifts too.

Well, it’s HMV. So they’ll probably have every mainstream DVD/record you’d be looking for. And I have to confess that I do benefit from their ever-ongoing sales when it comes to DVD’s. When I do want to shop CD’s and books(which they offer as well) however, I prefer to head over to Tower Records or Road Records — just because they are not HMV.

I have always found HMV expensive but in the past their prices seemed a lot more pardonable in view of what you were buying was of-the-time and cutting edge, both in terms of technology as well as newly released music and film. At that time there was no other option but to purchase media via the means of a shop — this was the pre-digital era when synthetic compact disks and cassettes offered the only singular means of listening and watching music, TV and film. This type of stockpile is getting less and less relevant. I personally haven’t bought an actual CD in years and with such online outlets as Amazon where goods can be bought for a fraction of the HMV price, HMV don’t so much as look pricey as actually preposterous. It is ridiculous how unrealistic and idealistic their price tags are when you consider all the cheaper, if not free means of getting your hands on this stuff now. It therefore baffles me how they snub any inclination to moderate their steep prices, instead selecting to maintain such expensive price tags at the same time as watching their profits plummet. Surely they can see that a correlation between plummeting sales and henceforth-cheaper prices has to be realized. I recently went to buy the complete Curb Your Enthusiasm box-set Series 1 – 6 as a Christmas present for a friend and was flabbergasted to see it priced at an extortionate € 90. I managed to get exactly the same thing(and it was brand new, not second-hand) for € 22 on Amazon. When all is said and done customers will go with the cheaper option when it comes to purchasing multi-media because unlike clothing, the fundamental product at hand, i.e. a film, never changes in terms of worth, it is permanently always going to be the same film, it will never diminish in any value aesthetically nor relating to quality and so whatever the cheapest means of laying your hands on it is — that shall be exactly where my custom shall go. That, not being HMV.

If mainstream movies and music rock your hypothetical boat, then you will certainly find a wide selection on offer here. If the boat you’re sailing is of a slightly less conventional nature(perhaps even a super alternative raft) then you might be lucky, but probably not. Despite the ubiquity of downloading these days, HMV always seems to be mobbed with music fans/movie lovers/gamers alike, which is probably a testament to the selection in it’s stock. I have found it so busy times that it’s difficult to get a member of staff to confer with about locating a CD or movie(not being the video gaming sort myself), but once you hunt one down they’re knowledgeable enough about their stock, and will try to order stuff in for you. Christmas is the obvious boom time and you will be queuing for a long time should you wait till December to buy your goodies. However it is worth a look at this time of year, if you can brave the crowds, as there are usually offers when you buy a few things together. And sure you know a physical CD always feels more authentic than a download, it makes you a REAL fan.

HMV is my number one music store because I know that I’ll more than likely find what I’m looking for here. The shop on Henry Street has an unbelievable amount of stock which can be found on three floors. It caters to everyone’s tastes with a good mix of chart music and classic oldies. The DVD section is also quite extensive and everything is categorized alphabetically so you don’t have to guess the genre. Henry Street HMV sells more than just CDs and DVDs. The games section in the basement covers all different consoles. Downstairs, you’ll also find posters, records and t-shirts and popular boardgames.

HMV is probably the biggest CD/DVD/Video game distributor in Ireland, and they have a big branch located on Henry St. It’s about half way up the street — maybe a little bit closer to the o Connell st side, and it has 3 floors — broken up into dvd/music/video games. It has everything really — new releases, oldies, classics… You’d be hard done by to not find what you were looking for here. They also have branches on Grafton St, Dundrum and a couple other places in Dublin.

I always find myself wondering into HMV if I have time to kill around town. I rarely buy music from HMV which I guess sounds odd but I think it has become more known for its cheap DVDs, and this is definitely the best thing HMV offers. The music collection is not bad, but they do not have much in the way or rare music or independents or local irish music. Plus the cds are a little expensive in my opinion. But the DVD sales they have are amazing and you can pick up quality films for a fiver or less sometimes. They also have pretty good deals on video games as well. This HMV is laid out nicely and is similar to the one on Grafton Street, with three floors, one for video games, one for music and one for films. The shop is much smaller than Grafton Street and it is quite narrow, so you it can sometime be akward when your browsing and people are trying to get by you.

There are many HMV’s around Dublin and Ireland but my favourite would have to be in Henry Street. The shop is on two levels and is packed full of the latest dvds, cds and computer games. Whenever I want to come here to find the latest cd or a present for a friend, I always find what I am looking for. They always have really good sales with big reductions. The staff are helpful and friendly and do there job well.

I’ve visited HMV many times and they always seem to have an incredible sale on, which is great! They sell CD’s, DVD’s, Games etc. At all relatively normal prices. I would suggest you shop around if your looking to buy a game, but you probably wont find any other shop that have lower prices on CD’s and DVD’s. The service is great and freindly. Ive never had to use the customer service but i would imagine its very good. HMV is one of the UK’s leading music stores, so they specialise in CD’s. But they do have a great range of DVD’s at low prices. Definately one to check out before you make any purchases in other shops.
