Leo Burdock Past & Present

Since 1913, Leo Burdock Fish & Chips has served fresh fish and chips to the people of Dublin from premises at 2 Werburgh St, beside Christchurch Cathedral. Burdocks has even served fish and chips during the 1916 rising, seen Ireland gain independence from Britain and survived two World Wars, though the shops had to close temporarily during World War 2, because of shortages.

In 1939 the effects of war had a drastic impact, with the supply of raw materials being scarce the one sole remaining shop was Leo Burdocks in Christchurch, which was run until the 1990’s by Brian Burdock and his business partner Charles McGrachan, since Brian’s sad passing it has been Mr. McGrachan who has directed the business which continues to flourish today.

Today, the Leo Burdock name stands proudly over 6 shops. The Rathmines store was opened in 1994 by the tv and radio star Gerry Ryan to a huge rapturous applause from the folk of Rathmines delighted that Burdocks had made it out o

Leo Burdock — The Man

In 1913 it all started with Bella Burdock mother of Leo who lived in the Liberties with her husband Patrick, they started the first Burdocks. Leo Burdock the son worked at sourcing his fish directly from the Dublin Fish Markets, Leo would rise at 5am each morning to gather the freshest catch the fish market had to offer.

Leo would bring his haul of fresh fish to the shop by horse and cart, stopping along the way to pick up potatoes and coal, the coal would fire up the coal burning pans that would serve the finest fish and chips, his legacy lives on today in giving the best to Dublin.
