History

Established in 1984.

Nutgrove Shopping Centre located in Rathfarnham Dublin Ireland, was unveiled to an excited Irish public in October 1984.

It was built in what was then still a very rural part of Dublin. In fact the site for the shopping centre was located on part of the old ‘Lamb’s Jam’ orchards.

The opening of the centre over 30 years ago transformed the shopping experience in Ireland. Suddenly shoppers from across the city and suburbs were able to enjoy Ireland’s first drive through restaurant when McDonald’s opened their branch there. The ‘American style’ experience of driving up to the window, ordering your food and driving away was a novelty, that many Dublin people remember fondly to this day.

There were other firsts when Nutgrove opened its doors. Another, almost experimental move for the day, was when the country’s first Social Welfare Services Office was located in a shopping mall environment for the first time. And over the last year an INTREO Office has been added as a public service also.

There is a lot of parking space, however, this place needs a revamp. I only go to the butchers, pharmacies, Dunnes and Tesco.

I remember going to nutgrove always as a child. And it was a great little shopping centre. I have been there a lot recently and my has it grown. The place is really big now and there is so much in the area. You are spoilt for choice with Tesco, Dunnes, Aldi and Lidl all beside eachother. The shopping centre itself is a little run down, but still has some really nice shops. It is no Dundrum, but I couldn’t rule it out! :)

ive always loved shopping here, i find dundrum too big, and the shops at nutgrove have much cheaper prices, the butchers is great has loads and cheap, and theres 2 euro shops now, n lots of new resturants tho i prefer macds there but sometimes cant resist a steak n cheese subway sandwich!

I don’t live near Nutgrove and the first time shopping here was only because I had to go to Homebase across the road. There’s Dunnes and Tesco for your weekly shop. Starbucks for your mid-​shopping coffee. Nourish and Holland & Barrett for healthy goodies. It is a great little shopping centre.

Scruffy, dated, old, boring.
The only good thing is the free parking. However being inside this shopping centre is kind of what I would imaging shopping centres to look like in Northern Iraq. It really is old looking from the red brick tiles to the horrific looking exterior. The atmosphere is generally dead as well, the only thing I find it good for is popping in for a quick coffee thanks to free parking.

Whenever I think of Nutgrove Shopping Centre nowadays, I can’t help but think of those men and women who really should admit that they ain’t that young anymore. They’ve so many wrinkles you want to iron them and yet they insist on dressing like they’ve just about managed to get past puberty.
There are a few saving graces for this place, the food court for one. There’s a lovely little pasta place that does a very awesome carbonara. There’s the Subway for those days when you’re hungover and of course that little kiosk that serves pretzels. Come to think of it, I really don’t see why so many people love pretzels that much, to me it’s just salty knotty bread… Go figure…
I have to admit, the place is a bit on the scruffy and dated side of things. You could say that a fair amount of the clientele are a little rough around the edges to say the least as well. The only time I go there now is during my lunch-​break. I’ve given it three stars because it’s an ok place, but it could do with a face-​lift.

Overall, «Meh», there is a big Tesco which is about all we go for (and again, it is scruffy!)

I read the reviews of Nutgrove and agree, yes it is free to park; yes it has Dunnes Stores and yes you can get Pretzels there. But there must be more to a modern shopping experience than what is offered in Nutgrove where the motto «Lose all hope ye who enter here» can not be far from your mind.
There are a number of things that I find irksome about Nutgrove:
A: since Hughes and Hughes there is no decent bookshop (there is another bookshop but it is still waiting to attain its certificate of mediocrity)
B: Eddie Rockets seems to have closed down (or it was last time I was there)
C: I am yet to find a non-​sticky table in the coffee shop
D: In an age where everyone is offering wifi Nutgrove remains stubbornly in the «no» camp
BUT having said that there are some good bits too. Aldi across the way is nice as is Harvey Norman and Harry Corry. It does have a mysteriously successful Golden Discs (I thought they all closed down before) and a Boots for all your hair, tooth, nail etc needs. There is also an excellent shop that puts photographs onto canvass which I like very much.
Ultimately I would recommend visiting it just so that you can make up your mind. It is served by the 16A, 17, 75 buses and is about 15 mins walk from Dundrum Luas stop.

Nutgrove is a basic suburban shopping centre which gets overlooked a lot because we expect so much more from shopping centres now. And it simply doesn’t compete with Dundrum or Liffey Valley or any of the more modern places.
However it is a great place for grocery shopping having both a Dunnes and a Tesco and you would certainly find yourself picking up a few bits at the other shops in there such as Pennys and Clarks. It also has lots of functional things like Hairdressers, motor tax office and a nice area for lunch.

Ah Nutgrove, I’ve very fond memories of shaking a tin for CPI while singing Christmas carols here during my years at school. Nutgrove is an under appreciated shopping centre. It’s in Rathfarnham but has loads of graet shops. It’s got Hughes & Hughes, Penny’s (they’re hard to come by) and Tesco. It’s convenient, you don’t have to pay for parking and it’s got loads of other local non-​brand shops that are great too.

When you think of shopping locations in Dublin, Nutgrove is heading on the tip of your tongue. But maybe it should be if you are heading South side anytime soon and don’t want to be lost in the crowds at Dundrum.
Nutgrove has some of Ireland’s biggest names in retail, including, Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Boots, Penny’s, Hughes & Hughes, Argos, Bus Stop and Golden Discs. Not to mention the Carphone Warehouse, O2 and Vodafone.
It also has lots of other cool stores to fulfill all you shopping needs like a chemist, opticians, fashion and shoe stores, jewelers, book and stationary store and arts and hobbies stores.
Apart from shopping it offers lots of services like, Post Office, Halifax, ATM’s, Social Welfare Office, Tax Office, Credit Union, and lots of passport photo machines!
As for food, my favourite type of service, well there is enough artery clogging fast food here to satisfy the fatty in all of us, McDonald’s, Burger King, Eddie Rockets, Pretzel King, India Gate Restaurant and they are in the process of building a Subway Sandwich! Yummy!
There is plenty of parking and even an Eco Car Wash that you can have done whilst you shop! If you don’t dive the centre is serviced by the number 16A, 17, 75 and 161 buses.

I really do not recommend this place at all. There are a couple of buses that come out here but from my experience they are not the most reliable. The shopping centre to me looks quite old fashioned and a little worse for wear. They have some of the big stores, a decent sized tesco (although the shelves seem empty quite a lot of the time) and a penneys and Dunnes. The basic stuff here isn’t nice though. I find there’s nowhere really to eat, even the McDonalds here is worse than the usual standard. There aren’t many shops here and those that are seem small and not up to the standard of some of the more modern shopping centres in Dublin.
