To me, Spin 1038 is like the radio equivalent of ‘Smash Hits’ magazine. It’s young, gossipy and hyperactive.
Definitely pitched at the teenage market, the shows are dominated by chart music and it’s fairly pop-​tastic with some dudge-​dudge dance music thrown in. If there’s any doubt as to their target market, Spin sponsors under-​age discos around Dublin every now and then. Apart from the music, shows are dominated by celeb gossip and competitions. Listeners are encouraged to get their spake in through calling and texting in. There is a chart show ‘as Gaeilge’ on a Sunday which can’t be a bad thing, especially for the poor sods preparing for the Irish oral.

I’ve been listening for Spin 103.8 a bit lately, and as far as commercial radio stations go, it’s not half bad.
I’ve tuned into the afternoon show The Spin, where discussion topics lately have included how old is too old to have children, eating disorders and the prevalence of rape in society. So I guess you could say these guys are touching on some pretty topical issues, which is what a radio station should be doing.
The music selection is pretty unimaginative, and they play Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi at least a hundred times a day. I’ve been very impressed to hear a few of the Kooks’ tunes however, so for me that balances out all the top 40s shite.

Spin 1038 is a ‘young people’s radio station.
Playing all the latest chart, dance, pop, indie and any other kind of music, it’s definitely a cool station to listen to. It started a number of years ago and has grown hugely in popularity, particularly with young people. It has a great breakfast show, lunchtime, afternoon and the evening show ‘the zoo crew’ is hugely popular with kids, particularly those who listen to it when doing they’re homework!
You’ll no doubt se they’re popular ‘spinnies’ floating around Dublin — pink mini’s with loads of branding.
