The Abbey Theatre

My brother and I saw «You Never Can Tell» and it was incredible. The cast and the set and the costumes, wow! I would recommend everyone visiting or living here go see that play!

I really enjoyed the show we saw at abbey theater (you never know) playing now. We were seated in row g (6 seats from the front) so we had a great view, but seats further back are just as good since it’s a small, two story theater.
There is a bar downstairs and upstairs (limited seating), and a café around the corner where you can grab a pastry and coffee (no hot desserts).
We also really appreciated that they allowed us to store our suitcases while we watched the show.

We saw George Bernard Shaw’s «Heartbreak House» and the cast was spectacular! We thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and also the bar upstairs (see photo) during intermission. Beautiful gem of a theater! It was a grand night for us in Dublin!

I really enjoyed my night at the Abbey Theater. I came to see The Picture of Dorian Gray and it was just wonderful. The acting was great, the costumes, the set, everything was A+. During intermission, I went to the bar and got a drink and I don’t remember what it was but I do know that it was definitely solid and the cheapest drink I got the whole time I was in Dublin. I was really delighted by my entire experience here.

Love this theatre. It is such an intimate venue. From every seat, there is a great view. I did still pay € 40 for a ticket but the OAP price was only € 23 which was great value. All the seats are priced differently ranging from € 13 to € 40 but you still get to make out the actors faces no matter where you sit. The seats do get a bit uncomfortable after a bit but a good stretch at the interval will sort that. The play I went to was the hanging garden — the acting was amazing and it brought out so many emotions from fear and sadness to laughter .
Right next to the luas and frequent buses, it makes it the perfect location.
I have seen many plays there and have been impressed with them all. We have some great theatre actors in this little island of ours. Long may it last!

The Abbey Theatre is a lovely medium-​sized theatre just off O’Connell Street. It was really cool to be seeing a modern show in such a historic landmark.
I saw a great production of «Shush» this week — a comedy about five women’s night-​in drinking copious amounts of alcohol, complaining about men, and coming to terms with the challenges life has thrown their way. Great talent!
I sat in row E, and it seems like the acoustics and view would be great from anywhere in the theatre as the seats are on an incline.
I’m tempted to take advantage of their backstage tours soon, which cost less than € 10 and seem very interesting.

The Abbey is a lovely medium sized theatre steeped in history. I went to see King Lear (my first ever play) which was thoroughly enjoyable with fantastic performances, especially from Owen Roe who played Lear. We didn’t go to the bar during intermission so I’m not sure what that area of the theatre is like. There’s nothing more to mention, other than the leg room being just about sufficient.

Went here for the first time yesterday and loved it. Nice small theatre to watch live productions. When am I back again ??

As a play lover I couldn’t pass up the chance to see something at the famous Abbey Theatre. A famous landmark founded in 1903 by W. B. Yeats and Lady Augusta Gregory. This theater itself didn’t disappoint. It is beautiful in my opinion, warm and inviting, and yet still has that posh of (in snobbish voice) being in the theatre. The seats are comfy enough but you can’t help feeling a bit cramped. My view was great but then again due to the awesome website, you can actual get a view of the stage from where you would sit. Prices vary and due to my seat choice I’m sadly without a kidney now. I would have said it was worth it but sadly the play itself was a bit of a let down.
The Government Inspector –A version of Nikolai Gogol’s classic satire on bureaucracy and corruption. I don’t blame the actors, they really gave it their all and based on their performance I will surely be back, but the play itself is a ZZZZzzzzz. It’s probably just me (then again there weren’t many laughs in the crowd) but that slapstick satire of mistaken identity has been done to death. It was bad to say the least. At one point I almost fell asleep (of which I never do).
The theater has near a full bar as well as a coffee. As a bonus the friendly staff will take drink orders in advance which will be waiting for you at the intermission. Too bad about the play but I’ll be back.

Oh, Abbey Theatre… your theater was as wonderfully constructed as I hoped and I adored being in a historical landmark.
The acoustics were fine; and thank goodness for Nick’s seat choices, we had extra leg room. The mini-​hiccups were that it was was super sweltering and the play has been done a million times (quick-​witted comedy with a sprinkling of mistaken identity).
Sad to say, we left during intermission. I know… What were we thinking? Just not an entertaining evening.

I studied Yeats in college so I have a bit of a soft spot for The Abbey seeing as he was a founder. These days it doesn’t look like the grand old building that it was — it looks like something that was modernised some time ago, and in a bad way. I know there are debates going on now to move this historic theatre of ours, however besides the ugly façade I have to say I’m a fan. I’ve been to many a good play here and one that stands out especially is The Iceman Cometh, which was performed circa 1991 – 92 and starred the fabulous Brian Dennehy. It was around four hours long with around three breaks but I appreciated every minute of it.

The Abbey Theatre is Ireland’s National Theatre and one with lots of history and republican ties.
It is a shabby old building and relocating and refurbishment plans or under way and well needed, but lets just hope that it doesn’t demolish the legacy that it has created.
It has two stages which play host to Irish classics and new Irish plays and playwrights.

The Abbey Theatre may not have the relevance it did back in 1907 when audiences were so incensed by Synge’s ‘Playboy of the Western World’ that they caused a riot, but it remains Ireland’s National Theatre nonetheless.
Through the years, The Abbey has been accused of playing it safe and commercial by continuing to produce staid productions of Synge, O’Casey, Shakespeare and Chekhov in order to please the middle-​aged, the middle-​class and the bus-​loads of Irish-​American tourists. However true this once was, I don’t believe it’s true today. Recent programmes have proved contemporary and dynamic. Even a production of ‘Julius Caesar’ was epic!
The theatre boasts a full bar as well as a coffee bar. If you need something to look forward to, you can order drinks in advance which will be waiting for you at the interval.
The price of tickets ranges from € 15 — € 38 for the Abbey stage but concessions are available for students, the unemployed and equity members.

I have seen a few plays here; a Tom Murphy production that I went to was very impressive. You are guaranteed value for your money as the players are professional and the stage production to the lighting is also extremely professional.
