Walk through the College Green arches into Trinity’s main square and you’ll be quickly introduced to the lax and languid William Lecky. The statue, by Sir William G. John, makes no bold statements, only adding to the atmosphere of learning and gentility from the college’s turn of the century hey day. Quite possibly seated on the Lecky Chair of History endowed by his widow to the college, Lecky’s commemoration depicts this poet, author and Trinity Graduate as a learned sage –perfect for the college’s green.

Lecky was a writer who most famously promoted the cause of Irish writers and politicians in the late 19th century… among his many qualifications was a degree from Trinity College with whom he maintained a relationship throughout his life. The College now has a Library and this statue in honour of him and his life’s work. His statue simply bares the name LECKY on the plinth. surely nothing more is needed here. He is placed in symmetry with the statue of Salmon on the other side of the campanile who is also seen in a chair. This statue i have always found to be the more pleasing of the two. i think the character of the man himself is more evident. and he just seems nicer than the provost… kinda like a cool professor.
