Alive, alive-o, the seafood here is so fresh you can still see it moving! The fish stands are covered with a varied selection of catch, with both whole fish and fillets, neatly and cleanly displayed, not smelly at all. There are also some fridges, a small selection of products like condiments or smoked salmon and tanks with live lobsters. The fishmongers are approachable and knowledgeable, so even if you don’t think you can tell a seabream from a seabass, they will be able to sort you out without making you feel inadequate.

Frankly a lot better smelling than its counterpart in Marino, this fish shop has the catchline«if it swims, we have it». Well, I didn’t see any dolphin steaks, but it has almost everything else, including a tank of live lobster so you can get to know your dinner before you cook it. As well as fish, Wrights also has a range of ingredients so you can buy all you need for a Thai fish curry or boullabaisse in the one sport.

I’m not a fish connoisseur but my boyfriend’s father is and he swears that Wrights of Howth is the best fishmonger. There are plenty of fish markets to choose from on this pier, but he always comes to this one first. He claims that the selection and quality is superior to other places of its kind. I like this place because there’s plenty of action inside. Business is good here. I have never been the only customer in the shop. The fish are wonderfully displayed in ice fridges and look delicious even raw. This shop also sells great seafood: langoustines, oysters, prawns, lobsters and clams.

Located alongside a number of fishmongers and seafood restaurants on Howth’s West Pier, Wrights provides a market-like atmosphere in which to pick up some fresh fish. They have every type of fish, prawn, lobster, mussel you could ever want, and even have live lobsters in a tank, waiting for the chop. As my friend so delicately put it, ‘the poor lobsters are on death row!’ At least we know they’re fresh. This place is not for the die-hard animal rights advocate or the squeamish vegetarian, but the fish is fresh and of good quality. There is a deli section here where you can obtain all sorts to complement your fish, including wine, lime juice, desserts and a large selection of condiments. A one stop fish shop!
