Is it fair to write a review of a place that you’re at for your Christmas staff party meal? Eh well to hell with it I’m going to do it anyway! Last year we were upstairs at Fitzpatricks Castle where a beautiful meal is laid out with all the trimmings; a glass of prosecco upon entrance, a gong is rung and the feast is laid out. This year for whatever reason we didn’t have that option so we were downstairs in the dungeon bar and grill and were greeted by a mulled wine. The mulled wine was good, if a little sweet, but lots of skin at the end of the glass that was off-putting. The décor is somewhere between dungeon castle and modern, there is a beautiful stone fire beside some dull uninspiring modern grey walls with lovely photos of the castle throughout the years. We were all seated in the dining room area of the bar and we had 3 options each of starters, main and dessert. I loved the sound of the spicy beef to begin, although the burger sounded divine Christmas being Christmas I went for their turkey and ham and then a pear dish for dessert. Expecting in my head a lovely piece of hot spicy beef I was very disappointed to discover the beef was cold, and quite frankly, not at all enjoyable. The main was fine but the cranberry sauce tasted exactly like the mulled wine. It was the same with the dessert. The pear came out red, like it had been soaked in the mulled wine, the same one we had at the beginning of the night and tasted the same as the cranberry sauce. The pear was hard and extremely difficult to eat with a spoon, it also didn’t taste good at all. Many of my company gave up on it. I had to complain to one of the staff as one of my colleagues received a dirty cup for his tea or coffee that obviously had not been put in or didn’t come out of the dish washer properly. I know it’s Christmas, and staff are under pressure, but at the same time, Fitzpatricks impress their upmarket tastes to the public, a lofty castle at the top of Killiney Hill, but I have to say the food is far from good quality, something they should really address for the prices they charge. A very disappointing experience.

This Bar & Grill is within Killiney Castle Hotel. The staff are great, menu has plenty of choices, Children are welcome. I always have the lamb chops(in season) which are so tasty and tender, served with chips in a separate bowl. I think it was € 22 Picky bit — the mint sauce that glutenous mess that is served in most restaurants and hotels. Mint Jelly would be much better but they never seem to have it. I generally ask for red current jelly. Go again? Yes.
