Definitely worth the visit. I loved the ruins and the story behind it all. The high crosses are so fascinating too. There’s such a rich history here. It’s worht the drive and there’s a film and a gallery. Then you’re free to roam the grounds.

This is Ireland!

Ineressant ist dieser Ort nur für Leute, welche an der kirchlichen Geschichte Irlands und den damit verbundenen Überbleibseln (Ruinen) interesse haben. Alle anderen Personen werden sicherlich daran rummäkeln, da es zwar alles sehr schön hergerichtet ist, aber eben nur Kirche, Friedhof und «Trümmer».
Nichts desto trotz ist dieser Ort der Mitelpunkt des geistlichen und geistigen Lebens Irlands gewesen. Er wird auch heute noch für so wichtig erachtet, das Papst Johannes Paul II hier eine Messe abgehalten hat, welche über 100.000 Menschen hierher gebracht hat. Bei den ökumenischen Gottesdiensten — ja das gibt es hier jedes Jahr — kommen tausende Iren um auch damit diesen Ort wert zu schätzen.
Wir waren an einem typischen Samstag da, das Wetter allerdings war mäßig. Vielleicht unser Glück, was die Menschenmengen anging. Das Visitorcenter umfasst eine Filmvorführung, welche ja nach Andrang in den unterschiedlichsten Sprachen, auch Deutsch, bedarfsorientiert anbietet. Zusätzlich sind dort mit ausführlichen Erläuterungen die wichtigsten drei Hochkreuze untergebracht. Weiteres Infomaterial kann man sich natürlich dort auch kaufen. Das Gelände ist komplett zugänglich und dort allerdings völlig ohne Erklärungen. Es besteht die Möglichkeit eine Führung zu buchen — empfehlenswert — sich an eine der Führungen dranzuhängen — geht auch — oder einen Audioguide zu nutzen. Sonst ist der Besuch etwas dröge.
Man kan dort locker 2 Stunden verbringen, wenn man alle Angebote nutzt.
Man kann dort in Grenzen überall sogar mit dem Rollstuhl oder einem Rollator hin.
Einen Makel hat die Anlage — den Parkplatz. Selbst an einem so gering frequentierten Tag wie heute (29.8.) war er komplett überfüllt. Der müsste dringend ausgebaut werden.

Probably not the most visited of Irish Historical Sites, more of a hidden gem really. I didn’t know of it until I was consulting with the Principal on a new itinerary for our Ireland trip. This would be on our way to the West Coast of Ireland, so I looked it up and began planning. Getting to the site, particularly in a coach is not the most straightforward, but we did get there. When you pull into the car park, there are some lovely ruins of a Norman castle.
When you arrive, there is a Tourism Center across from the site. The entrance to the site and the ticket building is lovely. There is one member of staff that was really friendly to our group, but the rest of the staff seemed to be… a bit hesitant and put off by our group. I don’t know why, but that is the reason that I took a star off. In the two times that I made bookings for our groups and led the groups, the staff weren’t particularly helpful and trying to get a receipt for the group was almost impossible too.
We were ushered into watch a film about Clonmacnoise and then ushered outside into a tour. Honestly… if you have limited time (like we did) or you don’t want to hear the same history twice, chose one or the other, but don’t feel the need to do both the film and the tour. In fact I would say the tour is better because along with the history of the site they will take you around and point out items of interest. In the building there is more information about some of the items and the site.
If the weather is not particularly good, make sure you bring some sturdy shoes as it will be soggy and a bit muddy walking through the ruins. It is a beautiful site though and I think if you are in the neighborhood, you really should stop by. My favourite bit is the Whispering Arch. It is carved so that if one person stands at each end of the arch and one whispers into the arch, the other person will hear it. I am not sure what peak times look like, but we always visited as soon as they opened on Thursdays and it is a good time as there is no one else there. It is lovely and peaceful in the morning and very mysterious with the dew and morning fog in the air.

Après avoir parcouru quelques kilomètres dans la campagne irlandaise, nous arrivons face à la rivière Shannon spectacle somptueux, auprès de laquelle se dresse le site de Clonmanoise. Vestiges, églises, croix celtiques, tout cela dans une atmosphere paisible et de quietude. Nous sommes accueillis par le personnel, et on nous fournis documents divers dans la langue correspondante, et outré le musée attenant intéressant une séance relatant l’histoire vient compléter la visite (en français1fois par jour) indispensable pour comprendre l’histoire du lieu.
On se sent imprégnés par les âmes errantes des guerriers enfouis sont les tombes que nous foulons, avec un peu de gêné quand même. Car ce champ est un vaste cimetière chargé de souvenirs. On a l’impression de visiter un mix du père Lachaise et du plateau de Gergovie !
A né pas manquer pour les amoureux de la celtitude !

The guided tour in english was very informative and the guide pronounced very well. With the film in the museum you can imagine how the monks lived in the middle ages.

There’s no beating Clonmacnoise. A virtually intact site of a medieval monastic ‘city’ really gives an idea of how life was on the Island of Saints and scholars. Even beter, the abscence of annoying visitor centres and guided tours mean you can discover this magic spot by yourself. One of Ireland’s real gems.

Zur Geschichte von Clonmacnoise wurde ja schon fast alles geschrieben — daher nochmal meine Eindrück von der faszinierenden Anlage: wenn man sich mit dem Boot über den Shannon nähert ist es ein beeindruckender Anblick und genau wie bei einer Anreise mit dem Auto muss man sich Sorgen um den Park– bzw. Liegeplatz machen, denn wer zu spät kommt muss warten. Bei unserem Besuch hatten wir Glück und nur wenige Boote waren bereits vor Ort. Leider hat das Wetter seine typisch irische Seite gezeigt und es fing immer mal wieder an zu Regnen (in Irland habe ich gelernt wie viele verschiedenen Arten von Sprühregen es gibt).
Das Besucherzentrum ist nett gestaltet — im Cafè gibt es — was in Irland nicht üblich ist — vertretbaren Kaffee und Snacks.
Die Ausstellung mit den originalen der Hochkreuze (um diese vor der Witterung zu schützen wurden diese durch Repliken ersetzt) kurzweilig und wir bekamen ohne Wartezeit mit unserer 4er-​Gruppe ein kurzes Video (naja) im Hauseigenen Kino auf deutsch vorgeführt. Das Personal ist, wie eigentlich alle Iren die ich kennen gelernt habe, sehr freundlich.
Das Eintrittsgeld mit ~EUR 5, — pro Erwachsenem angemessen.
Die Anlage wurde bei unserem Besuch von einer lautstarken Italienischen und einer nicht minder anstrengenden süddeutschenn Gruppe bevölkert, so das es nicht einfach war Fotos von den Gebäuden und Kreuzen zu machen.
Diese sind sehr eindrucksvoll und obgleich größtenteils Verfallen immer noch sehr schön anzuschauen.
Clonmacnoise wird alles in allem zu recht als eine der größten Attraktionen in Irland bezeichnet und ich kann einen Besuch, wenn möglich per Boot, wie schon von brotherjakob ausgeführt, nur empfehlen.

Die Kraft hat mich nicht durchströmt. Aber für uns ist ein Besuch in Clonmacnoise (Wiese der Söhne des Noise) ein Muss auf jeder Shannon-​Bootstour.
Allein der Weg vom Bootsteg durch die grasende Kuhherde ist ein Erlebnis für sich. Das Museum und die Ausstellung ist gerade das Stück Kultur, welches jeder ertragen kann und der Gang über den Friedhof mit seinen Klosterruinen hat wirklich etwas sehr Beindruckendes — vielleicht dann doch die Kraft.

Auf jeden Fall ist ein Foto von Clonmacnoise in Richtung Shannonebene Stromaufwärts garantiert das beste Landschaftsbild aus der ganzen Region.

Clonmacnoise ist eine alte Klostersiedlung am Shannon.
Sie wurde vor 1500 Jahren gegründet und war ein religiöses Zentrum, welches auch eine bedeutende Lehrstätte Irlands und Europas war. Der Ort hat eine interessante Geschichte, viele Kämpfe, Überfälle haben hier stattgefunden.
Ich empfinde Clonmacnoise als Kraftplatz. Besonders schön in den frühen Stunden am Tag oder bei Sonnenuntergang.
