Way before it became the now concrete-covered piazza, and way way before it was an «official» piazza, this part of Borgo San Frediano was very green and there were many vegetable gardens, especially around the old city walls. Hence this Piazza’s name(from latin viridaria«verzieri») this gardeny area was called Verzaria as early as the 1040’s. The ancient city door«Porta San Frediano», first opened in 1332, was popularly called Porta Verzaia because of the already popular name for this green area. It was also near here where, on the outer part of the city wall, residents would dump butcher trash like animal carcasses. Noms!
