I’ve been wanting to visit Barril for a while ever since learning that it was actually more of a garden lounge than a basement wine bar. From the street, kitty-corner to Birdy, it gives the impression of wanting to be a serious wine cellar serving serious wine… the name, the window sign full of old corks, the steep dark staircase. Like many things in Naples appearances misguide. The decent down the stairs lead you not to a cellar but a hidden garden. Old walls, crates as tables, odd and mismatched stools, chairs and couches, old fashioned memorabilia like gramophones and sun bleached French advertising posters all lend a relaxed atmosphere to the place(only the too-well studied expensive casual wear of some of the clients leads you astray. What do they serve? Drinks with a tasty happy hour spread, cheese and cold cut platters for those who want to buy them. Drinks are on the pricy side and 10% service was added(maybe for happy hour only? I didn’t ask). Excellent Campari Spritz and the Bellini’s are smooth. One little drawback, the bar is in another room, the wait staff are hanging out and sometimes sitting with the clients they know. They also are dressed like they are clients. It lends credence to the laid-back ambiance they are so close to achieving but it can be a bit disconcerting when a total stranger asks you what you want or you can’t identify who to ask for a refil. I will be back.
