A city of ruins? Pretty cool. After a while though, it looks all the same, but it’s still worth a visit. I would recommend getting an audio tour or a guided tour though, because like I just said, it all looks the same if you don’t know what you’re looking at (which was the case for me). It’s somewhat pricey at € 11, but if you’ve never seen ruins before, this is worthy of a visit. It’s also super big! It took me an hour and a half to walk around it, but I don’t know whether I covered all of it since I went without a map. Definitely worth a visit though; it’s only around 40 minutes away from Naples.

Excellent Guided Tour through Amazing Ruins!
Pompeii is near Naples and Mount Vesuvius and a must see. The volcano erupted covering the ancient city and it has slowly been uncovered. You can see homes, businesses, restaurants and many aspects of life at the time. The plaza at the top has an incredible view of Mount Vesuvius. The sea gate is also interesting. Definitely make the time to walk through the city tour. Wear comfortable shoes and take water.

Joined a tour. It was one of the best walking tours I’ve taken through an ancient ruin or city.
Lots to see and learn about the area and people during that period of time. It’s super hot when I went and you definitely need to bring some water and sunscreen with you. You’ll need at least a half to full day for this visit.
Tip — Outside the entrance, there are some street venders. You can get cool refreshing lemonade here made from giant lemons the size of your head!

It’s reasonably pricey to get in to Pompeii but it’s really worth the $$. Try to bring small denominations in Euros to pay for your entrance because we paid in 1, 2, & 5s and the lady was so thankful as they had nearly ran out of change. Anyway, we used the Rick Steves audio tour on the app on our phones to navigate Pompeii and it was pretty reliable. With that said, Pompeii is a city so it still helps to get a map with at least a basic layout. The streets are somewhat marked and it’s hard to get lost but after all the walking which you will do, you will probably be begging to find an exit by the end of the day. The Rick Steves audio tour hit the highlights so feel free to navigate on your own.
It’s really amazing how much work has been done to uncover this lost city and it’s artifacts and how well preserved the majority of it is. We went to the Archaeological Museum in Naples prior to coming here, so it was cool to see all the sculpture, glass, metal, and art that was uncovered at Pompeii and then walk Pompeii to really get a feel for how people actually lived. I will warn though to not underestimate how much walking is involved. As mentioned it’s a city after all, so prepare for that. The ground is very uneven so invest in some good shoes. It’s mostly non-​handicap accessible as there are steep areas, steps, tight doorways, cobblestones, deep gulleys, dirt roads, pebbles and other obstacles. I would suggest not bringing strollers. Even those backpacks that you can put your kids in would be a lot of work if you’re not in good shape. It can get hot really quickly so bring lots of water and possibly and umbrella and maybe a hat and a small bite to eat as there is hardly any shade, no places to eat inside, and there are water spigots around the city but sometimes hard to find. Even though there are tour groups there, you can kind of see them coming and can just go in a different direction.
Now, as you make your way around town, feel free to walk into the homes of those that no longer live there. Some of the original artwork still is on the walls. I really thought that was amazing that the colors in the art have survived more than 1900 years and still look to be in decent quality. I’m sure some may have been restored but a lot of the town appears to be authentically the way it was on that fateful day. I also thought it was cool that I think Pompeii is built on an angle and from what I read, the deep portions of the streets were so that horse carriages could take people around the city. The horses would poo in the streets among other things and in the evenings the townsfolk would just open up the water cisterns or reservoir into the streets and it would wash away all the crud from the day, leaving the streets clean as a whistle. I just thought that was cool that irrigation and innovation was prevalent even that far back in time. I also thought the amphitheater was cool in that the acoustics were amazing. You could basically hear the soft voice of the person standing in the middle of the stage even if you were in the nose bleed seats. I thought our adventure to Pompeii was well worth the money and time because it’s not every day that you come across an almost perfectly preserved ancient city and be able to see what life could have been like.

Things you should know about me:
1) After visiting the Natural History Museum in NYC at age ~15 and seeing a child from Pompeii, I’ve always wanted to come here (so much so that I rearranged my whole trip just to fit in Pompeii)
2) I never studied Roman history before, so in my head Pompeii was going to be something along the line of mud huts etc.
Things I learned after my visit:
1) I was correct, this place is definitely worth visiting!
2) Holy s%#t. No wonder these people weren’t keen on departing from home and instead stayed there during a volcanic eruption. This place must have been fabulous!
We came here as part of a tour group out of Rome. I’m guessing becoming a tour guide for Pompeii requires some certification etc, so our bus tour guide had to hand the group over to another guide when we arrived (she wasn’t the best sadly) but I did manage to overhear some other guides and learn a little more.
Ok, so where to begin on Pompeii itself? Well, as mentioned it was fabulous, yes even still as ruins, you can really see how marvelously advanced this city was, with sloping streets for drainage points, horse tie ups, kitchen shops, sliding doors, street cross walks to avoid puddles etc etc.
My only disappointment was not seeing more «bodies» (yes that sound kind of sick and morbid) but a lot of the ones on display were off for «further restoration». Googling will reveal this is less about restoration and more about science, and they are CT scanning the plasters to look at the preserved bones. Very fascinating, so I’ll give them a pass on that.
Should Pompeii be on your bucket list like mine? Can’t say that for sure. It’s definitely a MUST see if you’re anywhere in the Naples area, or yes, even worth taking a 2 hour bus down from Rome.

I went to the ruins of Pompeii twice in 2013 (the modern town is spelled with one i). The 1^st time was on 6÷4÷2013 and the 2^nd time was on 6÷27÷2013. Both times I felt the uniqueness of this place that had been a bustling city in 79 AD. You really have to experience it yourself. I did take photos.

Als ich meinen Urlaub geplant hatte war ganz klar, dass ich eine Tagestour Vesuv — Pompei machen muss! Und es hat sich auch gelohnt, aber… Pompei war halt einfach nur ganz ok.
Ganz eindeutig: Man muss es gesehen haben und wer weiß wann und ob ich wieder in die Gegend kommt und wieder die Gelegenheit zur Besichtigung haben werde.
Wir waren am Nachmittag da und hatten Glück, trotz Hauptsaison war es nicht voll und man konnte sich in Ruhe Sachen ansehen und Fotos ohne tausend Menschen machen. Zusätzlich zogen Wolken auf, was die Temperaturen leichter zu ertragen machte. Die deutschsprachige Reiseleiterin hat alles sehr schön erklärt und es war interessant. Doch viele meiner Mitreisenden waren enttäuscht, dass die menschlichen Gipsabdrücke nicht bzw. nur 3 Figuren zu sehen waren. Diese kennt man doch aus dem Fernsehen und die will man sehen, aber entweder sind die in Herculaneum oder im Museum, jedenfalls nicht dort.
Insgesamt hab ich viele neue Dinge gesehen und gelernt, aber so richtig von den Socken gehauen hat es mich für 13 € Eintritt nicht. Trotzdem: gut es gemacht zu haben…

Just take a look, how big tragedy was here… Vesuvio destroyed great city — it takes just a few moments… Here you can see great architecture, with volcano dust everywhere… It’s hard to imagine, how fast it takes to kill whole the city…

Sitting here and looking back on our trip to Pompeii — I’m still in awe. I can’t get over the history, the architecture, and the preservation of it all, just remarkable.
For those who don’t know — the city of Pompeii was ruined over 1900 years ago by the mighty volcano Mount Vesuvius. The ash from the volcano covered the entire city, destroying everything and everyone in its path.
It’s probably good that you know this before heading into the park — at least prepare yourself for the mixture of emotions you’re likely to feel. I, for example, thought it was pretty amazing that you could see where the tracks were for the doors to shops in the market place. Along those same lines — they’ve managed to preserve the ovens used in bakeries. They also have set up (behind a locked fence) shelves and tables of artifacts they’ve found since discovering the lost city 200+ years ago. Seriously the history is fascinating.
But remember those emotions I mentioned before? One minute I’m mesmerized and the next I’m so saddened — looking at the skeleton of a woman who was buried, or a child. Heartbreaking to think about.
Such an amazing site to visit though, and a must see as far as I’m concerned. No, you don’t need to carve out an entire day; a couple hours will do just fine*, but do not miss Pompeii.
Additional notes:
— Make sure you wear sneakers for this one… too much uneven ground to walk over, don’t want to trip and break/​twist something.
— Tickets to enter the park will run you about 13euros (little less than $ 15).
— Views from the top are pretty amazing, on a clear day you can see the mighty mountain.
— The park surrounding is also beautiful.

An unbelievably intense, emotional afternoon where you travel back to the time of 79AD. A time of catastrophe and true sadness. As Vesuvius towers in the background in all her glory you become an Archeologist walking through the ruins and digs of Pompei.
And what a journey. You’ll view the remains of homes large and small. The market areas, the bathhouses and — of course — the «red light» district which for so many reasons is an experience unto itself.
And — of course — there’s the «Petrified Subjects» which will leave you emotionally exhausted.
Notes:
1-​So much to see — plenty of walking here on some rough areas — be prepared and wear strong walking shoes.
2-​Three (3) hour drive from Rome results in wonderful views of Italy’s grand mountains overseeing small Italian cities and town. Views that will stay with you forever.
An incredible day…

Suggest reading up prior to visit or having a tour guide assist you. Lots of free water so bring a bottle. Bring snacks it’s a lot of dusty walking. Wouldn’t say this is amazing but it is historical and unite impressive. I do not regret visiting. Wear lots of sunscreen and bring a hat/​visor.

En mi primera visita a Nápoles tuve la gran suerte de visitar las ruinas de Pompeya, la ciudad de la Antigua Roma que acabó siendo enterrada cuando el Vesubio entró en erupción hace miles de años.
La verdad es que las ruinas se mantienen bastante bien, aunque aluciné cuando el guía nos dijo que había solo una pequeña parte de la ciudad, ya que la mayoría de ésta estaba enterrada. Desde arriba en uno de los lavabos se veía enooorme! Y eso que era solo una pequeña parte… un flipe.
Me encantó descubrir las casas donde vivíà la gente, sus cocinas, las termas, el colegio, los anfiteatros, las calles… ¡No vivían nada mal eh! Es una gran experiencia pasear por allí, se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo. Nosotros fuimos entre semana y creo que fue un acierto ya que aunque había bastante gente y grupos aún se estaba bien; seguro que los fines de semana son peores.

An incredible exploration that makes you feel like you stepped back in time.
Visited here in May, so we had comfortable weather with occasional rain (it rained for a little bit on us, but not very hard. It was cloudy most of the day, but the sun did come out). We were staying in Naples and drove over (about 15 miles S of Naples). We ate a good lunch in town before heading to the site, knowing we were going to spend the rest of the day here.
First, I have NEVER visited a historic site with so little security. Once we were in, there was NO staff around. The ruins had little buzzers that would go off if you got too close to something (which we discovered), but no one ever arrived to scold us. Further, we saw lots of stray dogs wandering the ruins. My worry is that the site will not remain well preserved.
Second, everyone says its amazing, but when you see how well the Volcanic Ash preserved the city, from A.D.79, it will still «blow» your mind. haha!
We didn’t take a tour, but we had a guide book and meticulously explored every section. From the preserved political slogans on the street, to the brothels with sexual imagery on the walls, everything was intact.
Plan to walk and wear comfortable shoes. Also, dressing in layers is key in the spring time.

Nachdem wir uns bei unserer letzten Kreuzfahrt bei unserem Stop in Neapel die antike Stadt Herculaneum angeschaut hatten, nutzen wir unseren diesjährigen Aufenthalt um die wohl bekanntere antike Schwesterstadt Pompeji anzuschauen. Ganz ehrlich hat es mir in Herculaneum besser gefallen; Ich möchte Pompeji nicht im August besichtigen, denn bereits jetzt im April war hier so viel los, daß man zum Besichtigen einzelner Häuser bereits warten musste. Auf dem Forum war trotz der Größe des Platzes eine ganze Menge an Menschen unterwegs, was hier in der Hochsaison los ist, möchte ich mir gar nicht vorstellen. Natürlich kämpft man hier ständig gegen den Verfall an; ganze Straßenzüge sind gesperrt, da hier eine Häuserwand abgestützt werden muß, während um die Ecke Arbeiter versuchen, ein Haus zu rekonstruieren — insgesamt kann man leider nur einen kleinen Teil der Stadt besichtigen.
Aber nun zu Pompeji selbst: Einfach unglaublich, was die Römer in der Antike hier geschaffen haben, obwohl nur noch ein Bruchteil davon sichtbar ist. Die Straßen, die Fußgängerüberwege, die z.T. heute noch sichtbaren Bleileitungen, der Aufbau der Villen mit dem Atrium usw., ich bin einfach fasziniert. Man sollte das einfach mal gesehen haben, um sich auch nur annähernd das Leben damals vorstellen zu können. Beeindruckt hat mich auch, steht man auf dem Forum, sieht man direkt auf den Vesuv und wird sich der Nähe des Vulkans bewußt.

Staying in Sorrento for a long weekend we visited Pompeii for the day (late March)
We chose Pompeii over Herculaneum as it was a shorter train journey and also has its own station unlike Herculaneum which is apparently ¹⁰⁄₁₅ min walk through err not such a nice area
Got the train from Sorrento station, which takes less than an hour and costs 5 € each return!
11 € to get in and spent 3 hours there wandering around
We didn’t get an audio guide and just read from the small guide book provided
This was okkk however if you wanted more info and had the time and money I would have got audio or maybe even a guide as there must be so many stories and bits that we missed
Weather was cloudy so was fine walking around — I can imagine in summer when super hot and a lot busier it would be a nightmare tbh! Even in March there were big groups of people on tours which were a bit annoying (I’m not good with tourists)
Highlights were amphitheatre and some of the frescos that had been uncovered
Even my bf who hates museums and wandering round buildings enjoyed it!
A must if you are in that area of Italy

Pompei — Oh my it is HOT there. In hindsight I would have done this very differently.
Suggestions:
1. Bring a hat or umbrella.
2. Bring a large mouth water bottle. Use the fountains scattered about to refill them.
3. Pack a nice lunch and a blanket to sit on. Once within the city there is only dirt — no grass or leafy areas.
4. If you can manage it bring some chilled wine to have with lunch.
5. Place it all within your day pack.
6. Sunscreen is a must.
Now that your ready for a full day in the sun, head on in. There is little to nothing to buy inside (and everything inside is totally overpriced). This is a place to wander and get lost so long as you are prepared. If you are not prepared you will suffer. There are few amenities inside, so be sure to use the bathroom at the main gates. All the tourist items are outside the gate — buy them on the way out, not on the way in.
Kids may get bored (there is only so much gray dirt and walls one can stand after awhile) and run off, so unless you are tracking them with a GPS, keep them close. This is a good spot for the those little kid leashes.
If you are prepared this can make for a very pleasant day. We were not so it sucked, at least from my perspective. It will be a few more years before I fully recover from the sunburn.
Like I said before, when I go back, I will be prepared.
CAVE CANEM!

Pompeii is a majestic time capsule to a prior age where this patch of land was once known as the sex capital of Rome. This is true; we know this. There is evidence of nearly a hundred brothels in ancient Pompeii. Our tour guide actually walked us through a bordello where images – advertisements essentially – of available sex positions remain plastered on the walls. Now, you’d think this fact would be suppressed by the Christian fundamentalism pervasive in Italy (and for a long time, it was), but economics and the driving of tourism would have nothing of it.
But modern Pompei is still as Christian as the rest of the country – the source of a yearly pilgrimage even – so along with statues of the Virgin Mary for sale around the entrance of Pompeii are numerous phallic souvenirs. I’m not joking, and it’s not subtle. There are plainly large wooden phalluses with wings for genitals for sale centimeters from rosaries. Oddly, my mother never noticed these (which may explain how my girlfriend and I get away with so much when at home). While walking through the ruins, we stumbled across odd arrows carved from stone. Those weren’t arrows… well, actually they kind of were. I guess they kill two birds with one stone, pointing and declaring with a single symbol. Rather efficient actually. I have to hand it to the Romans for being so candid.
Pompeii was a strange stop on the Globus tour I was one, but a welcome one. Other than the Coliseum, Pompeii was the only completely secular attraction we visited. The guide was honest about the city’s origin, its economy, and how it was destroyed. I know some less enlightened folk would claim divine retribution, but just remember Pompeii was only one of several communities destroyed by Vesuvius. The tour, though relatively short, was surprisingly thorough, allowing access to many of the highlights of the location, though not all. My advice, while the guide talks, take advantage of the break, and peak into many of the other ruins not covered. You can snap photos to your heart’s content.
The day we arrived, it was hot, like being in a volcano (too soon?). To add injury, there was little to no cover in Pompeii, and for the majority of the tour, we were climbing. The Pompeii ruins reside on a hill with every road leading up (exception for those, you know, leading down). Unlike other ruins around Italy, Pompeii is the most untouched – with actual corpses encased in ash on display. Pompeii also has the oldest roman amphitheater.
If there is any criticism to be had, it would be the unfortunate side effect of history. These ruins are in poor shape, with little actual remaining evidence of the city’s once greatness. All the best looking areas are later restorations, with most of ancient Pompeii be relegated to walls and columns. Basking in the elements, these ruins are fated to disintegrate with time. Personally, I hope they maintain the status quo and not take any creative license in restoration. Other than that, the vendors outside the entrance are not terrible pushy, and the comical dichotomy of Christian, pagan, and phallic memorabilia all sharing the same table had me in stitches. Pompeii is truly an important landmark and one that should be visited if one is in the region.

Disparu sous la lave du Vesuve en l’an 79, le site est très bien conservé. Pendant l’exploration, vous verrez des maisons, des œuvres, les allées pavés, le théâtre et l’amphithéâtre (pour les amoureux de Pink Floyd !)
Quelques conseils :
— Prenez vos tickets, un plan et guide en français à l’entrée du site, évitez de les prendre à la gare
— Prenez de bonnes chaussures, un chapeau et beaucoup d’eau, il fait très chaud.
— N’espérez pas tout visiter, surtout en été, profitez des points important, et de l’amphithéâtre à la fin, ombragé et plus frais.
— En sortant, le meilleur restaurant typique et peu cher est Add´U Mimi, petite terrasse avec wifi, au calme, très agréable pour casser la fatigue après Pompéi.

No words (nor expressions) can describe the incredible experience of travelling back through time and seeing how people lived in Pompeii. They had everything we have now. Visiting here will open your eyes at how people have not changed. Expect to spend a tremendous amount of time exploring, but here are a few tips to keep in mind:
1. Try to avoid visiting in the summer. Aside from the crowd, the streets in Pompeii are not shaded and the scorching sun will cook you.
2. Try to visit as early as possible to avoid the crowd (and get out just in time for lunch). There are a bunch of restaurants by the exit area of Pompeii… my fave is Ristorante Suisse. They have great coffee… and don’t pass on the pizza napoletana. Everything that grows on Mount Vesuvius is sweet (and organic).
3. Bring lots of water. They do have restrooms around Pompeii.
4. For first time visitors, a tour guide is a must. The locals know so much info about Pompeii and the area that you’ll learn a ton of stuff you won’t normally get from an app.
5. I wouldn’t advise bringing young kids here (especially those who are attached to their strollers). There are no flat grounds in Pompeii.
6. Right around the corner from a hotel in front of Pompeii is a campground. Definitely will do when I return —

«Aquel maldito día»
Nos encontrábamos de crucero el verano de 2013, y el barco hacía escala en Napoles ¿Qué significa eso? Que tras la vuelta de rigor por la ciudad tienes dos opciones, o coger un ferry e ir a Capri, zurrarte una pizza que no se la salta un gitano y pasar un día Ibiza-​style, o bien tirar hacia el lado histórico, enfundarte la gorra de 40 grados a la sombra e ir a Pompeya (con algún guía a ser posible, la disfrutaras el doble).
Partamos de la base de que el estado de Pompeya es lamentable, el gobierno italiano ha cuidado poco o nada la excavación y el resultado es que cada año caen dos o tres casas de las vías principales, eso sí, mantiene intacto un encanto que la convierte en uno de los sitios mas impresionantes que he visitado.
Y es que a pesar de estar muy desmejorada, nada te quitará del recuerdo visitar una ciudad cuyo aroma permanece practicamente intacto, que tenía pasos de cebra (flipa), disponía de varias casas que actuaban a modo de «bar» e incluso tenían varios «Mercados de San Miguel». ¿Habría Unilocalers en aquella época?.
Eso si, cuando te cuentan que el pico mas alto es el Vesuvio y que el segundo que ves a su derecha (solo 300 o 400 metros mas pequeño que el pico principal) es el sedimento que dejo la erupción, un escalofrío recorre todo tu cuerpo.

I have been to Pompeii twice now. I’ve walked through it with a tour guide and without. There are pros and cons to each.
I certainly learned more with the tour guide. I understood so much more about the life that was lead in ancient Pompeii and also a better understanding of what I was looking at. It is very easy to get turned around in there as it is a *very* large area. The guide obviously prevents that. I went back very recently and this time, did not hire a guide. We covered more space and found cool areas that had been left out of the guided tour. I don’t think we would have enjoyed it as much if we hadn’t had a guided tour before and already knew the area though. The guide was worth it for our first Pompeii experience.
First off, cash only to enter. Very important. There is an ATM if you don’t mind a small hike up a hill. Second of all, there is a lot of auto theft in that area! Hide anything that looks to be of any value and most definitely pay the money for secured parking.
Allow yourself time. We mistakenly thought we could spend a few hrs there. A few turned into several, much to my frustration.
There is a café inside the park. It’s sort of disguised and looks like an old building, but you walk in and enter the modern world while leaving Ancient Pompeii outside. Cold drinks, ice cream, sandwiches and air conditioning. :) It would have been easy to miss had we not stumbled into that area on accident.
There are a couple of touristy market areas as you exit the park gates. Of all the places I’ve been in the world, they are vultures like no other. The first time, I was inexperienced and learned the hard way. The 2^nd, I put my experience to good use. Haggle. Do not let them sweet talk you or flatter you. Hang on to your £££.

La verdad es que cuando llegas a Pompei quedas fascinado tanto por lo que puedes ver como por los sucesos que allí ocurrieron, y que como consecuencia de ellos, podemos observar la cantidad de restos tan bien conservados.
Me pareció un poco masificado, en algunos momentos parecíamos una plaga de langostas moviéndonos sincronizadamente entre baños y lupanares.
Para mí la visita ideal es con un guía como hicimos a posteriori en Herculano. Suelen estar a la entrada en la zona de tickets y se ofrecen por 10 euros persona (realmente merecen la pena).
Nosotros por desgracia estuvimos esperando bastante tiempo y no pudimos formar grupo (mínimo 8 aunque depende del guia). Recomiendo ir comido … y bebido y con unas buenas zapatillas, no obstante hay fuentes y cafetería.

At the end of our Amalfi Coast whirl-​wind tour, my husband and I stopped here in Pompeii for a visit. Our driver dropped us off, and we proceeded to purchase tickets (it was already 3 pm or so, we had to hurry to see the ruins before closing!).
Out of the 2 weeks we were in Italy, this Pompeii visit was one of my husband’s favorite destinations. He and I were both amazed by how these ruins are one of the best kept (best preserved) sites in the world. No wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage site!
During our visit, we listened to the free Rick Steve’s audio-​tour that took us throughout the ancient city, we learned so much about how life was like back then… and got to see/​hear what each of the rooms, plaza, figurines, etc. meant. We event did some jumps in the air right in the middle of the amphitheater.
At the hour & season we went, there weren’t that many tourists, so we were able to stroll at a leisurely pace to view the ruins. We even saw the sunset from Pompeii too, and got a good view of Mt. Vesuvius (which was the volcano that exploded and left Pompeii in the ashes).
This is a remarkable site and we are so happy we had the opportunity to see this place during our trip to Italy! If you are already in the Naples + Amalfi Coast area, then we highly recommend this as a stop for your vacation or trip.

My bus tour to Pompeii from Rome was totally awesome! It was a nice ride down and back and a good day trip to take. You can also take the train but then you have to take a bus or taxi to the site and you end up paying just about the same amount.
It was truly amazing to see this city. The Frescoes are so beautiful and give you a glimpse into the life and art of that time that people had in their homes. Much like we have today but of course a different style. It was a pretty modern city of it day and had it not been for Mount Vesuvius there is no telling where or how far advanced they’d be now.
To see the wagon wheel imprints in the ground and how the people ran for their lives screaming in the structures that were from the actual humans covered by the ash was astounding and surreal. You will have no doubt that this city was a real working and living part of history once you see the teeth and part of a scull from a couple people.
The worse part of the trip was not getting to spend as much time as I wanted to. I will definitely be back to roam around and see the city again. Now that the Frescoes have been uncovered the color is fading along with all the wear and tear on the city from all the tourist.

Mio tour bus a Pompei da Roma era assolutamente fantastico! Era un bel giro verso il basso e posteriore e una buona gita a prendere. Si può anche prendere il treno ma poi devi prendere un autobus o un taxi per il sito e si finisce per pagare quasi lo stesso importo.
Era veramente incredibile vedere questa città. Gli affreschi sono così belli e darvi un assaggio della vita e l’arte di quel tempo che persone avevano nelle loro case. Molto come abbiamo oggi, ma ovviamente uno stile diverso. Era una città piuttosto moderna di essa giorno e lo ha avuto non stato per Vesuvio c’è non dire dove o quanto lontano essi avanzata sarebbe ora.
Per vedere il carro ruota imprime in terra e come la gente correva per la loro vita urlando nelle strutture che erano da esseri umani reali coperti dalla cenere era incredibile e surreale. Non avrete dubbio che questa città era una vero lavoro e viva parte della storia, una volta che vedete i denti e parte di un cranio da un paio di persone.
La parte peggiore del viaggio non era sempre a spendere così tanto tempo come ho voluto. Sarò sicuramente al vagare intorno e vedere di nuovo la città. Ora che gli affreschi sono stati scoperti il colore sta scomparendo insieme a tutti l’usura sulla città da tutti i turisti.

Pompei war eine antike Stadt, die durch den Ausbruch des Vulkans Vesuv im Jahr 79 n.Chr. untergegangen ist.
Heute sind weite Teile der Stadt schon ausgegraben und noch gut erhalten, viele Gebäude werden auch restauriert.
Wir hatten eine Führung dort durch die Stadt, die sehr interessant war. Es ist unglaublich, wie fortschrittlich die Stadt schon vor mehr als 2000 Jahren war.
In Pompei findet man u.a. ein Amphitheater, wo meist Gladiatorenkämpfe stattgefunden haben, eine Schule, eine Färberei (gefärbt wurde mit Urin, welches an den Straßen in Behältern aufgesammelt wurde), Thermen und sogar ein Freudenhaus.
Natürlich gab es auch viele Häuser, manche davon sind mit Garten, Kochstellen und Olivenpresse noch ziemlich gut erhalten. In der Stadt gab es auch kleine Bistros/​Verkaufsstellen, bei denen man schnell was essen konnte.
Dem Phallus begegnet man öfter in Pompei, er ist Zeichen von Fruchtbarkeit. In Neapel werden als Souvenirs sogar rote Chilis verkauft, die den Phallus darstellen sollen und Glück bringen sollen, wenn man sie jemanden schenkt.
Echte Leichen bzw. Skelette hat man auch ausgegraben, diese wurden zuvor vergipst. Zum Teil sieht man sogar noch die Knochen.
Pompei ist nähe Neapel, wer also Urlaub in Neapel verbringt, sollte unbedingt auch Pompei einen Besuch abstatten (mit der Bahn fährt man eine halbe Stunde).

During our Mediterranean cruise vacation, one of the places I was looking forward to seeing was Pompei. Our cruise ship stopped for a day in Napoli (Naples) and we had 1 day for tours. We opted for the ½ day Pompei tour so that we could spend the other ½ of the day in Napoli… hey, I had to try a legit Margherita Pizza in Napoli!
Back to Pompei… it’s a pretty long bus ride from Napoli to the ancient city. When you arrive, the buses drop you off in a parking lot, then you walk through a bunch of touristy shop vendors selling you souvenirs & tchotchke’s. This seems to be a trend in most major tourist spots in Italy.
Once we got inside, it was very chilling to actually walk through the city that was covered in volcanic ash from an eruption at Mt Vesuvius. Our tour guide took us through the streets and buildings of Pompei… you can see drawings on the walls, pottery, life as it was just before the apocalypse. I couldn’t help but imagine the fear that must’ve been going through their minds.
After the thoughts of the terrible things the city inhabitants experienced subsided, my thoughts shifted to the size and scope of this excavation… it’s massive! There’s hundreds of workers still uncovering things. It’s nowhere near completed. I began to let it sink in and imagined the life in the city before the disaster. The streets are narrow… rooms and buildings are relatively small compared to today’s structures. Overall, it was amazing and once again I was awestruck.
One thing about these tours… you either listen to the tour guide, or take pics and miss out on the details. We chose the latter, so I don’t have much detail on historical facts, etc… that was the trend of our trip. We’ll just have to come back again.

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Much of the city and its people were buried under the ashes that spewed from the sudden & deadly eruption. The city was preserved very well under the ashes for thousands of years due to lack of moisture and air, before it was initially rediscovered in 1599. This lays out what you might expect to see here, and since this is not a history lesson, I’ll ask that you go read up on the rest before visiting the ancient city of Pompeii.
There are many great spots for photo ops. Near the entrance, there’s an open area w/​Mt. Vesuvius in the background. There are some larger ancient structures that are still intact for people to go inside. A camera w/​low light capabilities may come in handy here.
Pompeii covers about 160 acres, and knowing the history of it will make the visit so much more interesting.
Since I can’t use words to fully describe what you’ll experience during your visit (if you choose to go), I will offer a few pointers.
1. Wear comfortable shoes. Sneakers are best. Flip flops are not ideal. The roads are uneven and can be easy to trip & fall. Expect a lot of walking
2. During the summer, bring sunscreen, a hat or even an umbrella. Pompeii offers almost no shade.
3. Get a map. After an hour, the streets start to look the same and you’ll need it to find your way
4. Bring water & snacks. Not cool to smoke though as there are families walking around.
5. Speaking of families, this place may not be ideal for strollers or older folks due to the uneven roads.
6. Unless the map you pick up at the entrance has been updated, the section where they show the ash covered bodies was not clearly labeled on the map. You may have to ask around once you’re near.
Overall, this was a very good experience, seeing a city completely buried under ashes and eventually excavated, with many people frozen in the exact position they were in when the hot ashes fell upon them.
And of course… bring a fully charged camera. Enjoy!

Malheureusement en août il font des travaux et du coup impossible de voir l’attraction majeure.

en el museo hay reproducciones de los cadaveres que se encontraron donde se puede ver como reacciono la gente. imprescindible visita si se esta en Napoles

ich war hier im Sommer 2006, es war sehr schön.
Bei Interesse an geschichte lohnt es sich auf jeden Fall dahin mal einen Ausflug zu machen, man kann sich super die einzelnen gebäude inkl. Wandmalereien etc anschauen und einiges dazu lernen wenn man eine Führung mitmacht.
Die üblichen Souvenirstände fehlen auch hier nicht.

Hmmm… Pompeji. Also vielleicht bin ich ja ein Kulturbanause, aber nachdem ich mir die Ruinen in Rom schon angeschaut habe, muss ich sagen: Kennste eine, kennste alle.
Ich war ca. 4 Stunden in Pompeji und habe vielleicht so an die 50% gesehen. Die Mosaiken und Wandbemalungen, die man ab und an sieht, sind schon sehr nett. Zum Großteil waren es auf unserem Rundgang aber einfach nur Ruinen. Von meinem zunehmenden Desinteresse abgesehen — dafür kann ja Pompeji nix — fand ich die etlichen Straßensperrungen ziemlich störend. Dauernd mussten wir uns Alternativwege suchen, weil «geradeaus» mal wieder abgesperrt war. Das war lästig. Auch waren viele Häuser abgesperrt, so dass man nur einen winzigen Blick nach drinnen erhaschen konnte.
Teilweise stimmten die Straßen auch nicht mit dem Plan überein, es gab kleine Straßen, die nicht eingezeichnet waren — das war auch verwirrend, wenn man eh nicht so laufen konnte, wie man (nach Plan) wollte.
Zudem ist es traurig, dass die meisten gefundenen Dinge des täglichen (damaligen) Lebens eingesammelt wurden und nun nur noch durch ein Gitter hindurch «bestaunt» werden können. Mag ja sein, dass das zur Vorbeugung vor Diebstählen geschah, aber zig Töpfe übereinander wahllos in einem Regal gestapelt finde ich eben nicht so anschaulich, wie Töpfe, die irgendwo noch in einem Haus zu sehen sind.
Merkwürdig fand ich, dass man nicht gleich beim Ticketkauf auch Plan und Beschreibung dazu bekam. Nein, man durfte sich erst am Ticketschalter anstellen und dann nochmal am Schalter für Ansichtskarten und Pipapo und eben auch Plan und Beschreibung. Bei uns war glücklicherweise der Andrang nicht so groß, wenn da gerade ein Reisebus abgeladen wurde, möchte ich das nicht machen müssen.
Angenehm war übrigens die Besuchszeit Anfang Januar. Die Straßen/​Wege waren teilweise menschenleer, es war eine angenehme Temperatur… das ist dem Hochsommer vermutlich vorzuziehen.
Es gibt ein Café auf dem Gelände, in dem man Speisen, Getränke und diverse Souvenire bekommt. Die Preise waren «normal», nicht günstiger und nicht teurer als in anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten auch. Die Toiletten müssen aber lobend hervorgehoben werden, die waren angenehm sauber.
Kleiner Tipp, wer von Pompeji aus zum Vesuv will: Wir wurden am Bahnhof des Circumvesuviana gleich angesprochen, ob wir zum Vesuv möchten. Für die Busfahrt hin und zurück wollte uns der nette Mann 20 EUR abknöpfen. Wir sind dann zum «Busbahnhof» gelaufen, um uns erst einmal zu informieren, dort hätte der Bus dann weit weniger gekostet (der Vesuv war aber eh geschlossen). Der nette Mann vom Zugbahnhof tauchte dann auch am Busbahnhof auf und schwatzte mit dem Busfahrer. Offenbar gehörte der auch irgendwie dazu, was sehr interessant war. Also bitte nicht abzocken lassen!

Durch die alten Strassen zu schlendern, die Häuser zu besichtigen und einen Eindruck vor der Kulisse des Vesuv zu bekommen ist schon beeindruckend und interessant. Wenn man in der Gegend ist sollte man hier unbedingt vorbeischauen, denn wo bekommt man so etwas schon zu sehen.

Historisch gesehen natürlich jede Reise wert. Preislich ist es auch in Ordnung, lediglich der Arbeitseifer der Italiener ist wiedermal mehr als schlecht. Da werden Dinge früher als geplant zugesperrt, nur damit man ja nicht zu spät nachhause kommt, etc.

Also, ich weiss ja auch nicht. Da wird einem diese «Stadt» als Sehenswürdigkeit empfohlen und was macht man als braver Tourist: Man geht artig hin. Aber was soll ich sagen: Das reinste Trümmerfeld. Nicht ein einziges Haus ist intakt. Soweit das Auge reicht, stehen nur noch Ruinen. Die Straßen sind, wenn überhaupt, höchstens mit SUVs befahrbar. Deshalb stolpern alle Besucher mehr oder weniger hilflos über die unebenen Gesteinsbrocken. Ich wundere mich sowieso über die Menge an Besuchern, die sich hier durch die Trümmer schiebt, wobei es sich wohl nicht um einen repräsentativer Querschnitt durch die Bevölkerung handelt. Dominierend sind Reisegruppen deutlich unter 20 oder über 60 Jahren Altersdurchschnitt (besonders die letzteren haben offensichtlich Schwierigkeiten mit der Fortbewegung in den Straßen). Ausserdem gibt es da noch eine weitere stark vertretene Gruppe, Lehrer von altsprachlichen/​humanistischen Gymnasien. Diese erkennt man am ununterbrechlichen Redeschwall mit dem sie vor allem die hordenweise auftretenden jungen Besucher traktieren. Diese vermitteln rundweg den Eindruck, als wünschen Sie auf der Stelle die zweite Zerstörung der Stadt inklusive des Lehrkörpers herbei, damit sie endlich das pulsierende Leben in Neapel geniessen können.
Zu allem Überfluß gibt es nur einen einzigen Laden und ein Café in dieser Stadt und um da überhaupt hinzukommen, muss man Eintritt bezahlen!!! (11 Euro für Erwachsene). Aber die Italiener hatten ja schon immer interessante Geschäftsmodelle, man denke nur an den Müllexport aus Neapel oder diesen komischen Traditions– und Trachtenverein aus Rom.
Zurück zu unserem Trümmerfeld. Da stellen sich also ein paar des Englischen mehr oder weniger mächtige ältere Herren hin und erzählen für ein paar Extra-​Euro blumig, wie toll das hier alles vor 2000 Jahren war. Vielleicht wäre das auch eine Geschäftsidee für Bottrop-​Kirchhellen: Eintritt verlangen und jedem einreden, früher war alles besser.
Ok, ok, da war dieser Vulkanausbruch der die ganze Stadt unter Asche begraben hat (nicht Bottrop, Pompei!). Aber erstens hatten die ja nun genug Zeit, den ganzen Schutt beiseite zu räumen und zweitens gabs damals noch nicht mal Flugverkehr, der wegen einer Aschewolke hätte zusammenbrechen können.
Also, ich bin enttäuscht, meine nächste Tour geht bestimmt zu einem besser erhaltenen Platz, vielleicht Angkor Wat…

Ercolano, paestum, omplandis, cuma, baia, pompei… Autant de sites remarquables qu’il vous faut visiter durant votre sejour en campanie! Ercolano est a mon avis le plus interessant ainsi que paestum et ses trois immenses temples d’inspiration grecque, mais Pompei reste remarquable par son etendue… Seul inconvenient on se croirait au mont st michel avec ses hordes de touristes qui deambulent (c’est plus calme a partir de 17:00) il faut compter une journee entiere pour visiter mais vous né pourrez pas tout voir. Surtout, n’oubliez pas de prereserver par internet pour visiter les termes suburbains et la villa des principe de napoli. Ca né coute rien de plus mais sans cette resa impossible d’acceder a ces 2 visites. A la tombee de la nuit participez a «la lune di pompei» une visite nocturne d’une heure et demi de la necropole, de villas et de l’amphitheatre…c’est magique! Si vous avez faim, rendez vous dans le centre de pompei chez Todisco, un restau sous les arbres ambiance familiale (la patronne parle un peu francais) et vous pouvez y manger une pizza ou une scalopine pour 2,50 euros. Bön et vraiment pas cher

In der Region Pompejis gab es im 1. Jahrhundert große Tragödien.
Vielen ist nur der große tragische Ausbruch des Vesuvs im Jahre 79 n. Chr. bekannt. Doch im Jahre 62 n. Chr. gab es auch schon eine große Naturkatastrophe. Ein schreckliches Erdbeben legte die Stadt in Trümmer.
Pompeji hatte sich damals schon zu einem wichtigen Handelszentrum entwickelt gehabt. Man sagt heute, daß es nur dem eisernen Willen der Überlebenden zu verdanken war, daß die Stadt wieder aufgebaut und der Handel wieder belebt wurde. Der Wiederaufbau, ja sogar die Vergrößerung der Tempel waren in vollem Gange, als eine noch viel größere Katastrophe über die Stadt hereinbrach.
Plötzlich brach der Vesuv, nach Jahrhunderten der Ruhe, wieder aus. Eine riesige Staubwolke und ein Regen aus glühender Lava senkte sich über ganz Pompeji. Durch den dann folgenden Aschenregen und die giftigen Gase starben auch die letzten überlebenden Menschen und Tiere. Die Schicht wurde 5 bis 6 Meter dick und reichte von Herculaneum bis über Pompeji hinaus.

Wer in Neapel oder der Region ist, sollte sich die Zeit nehmen Pompeji zu besichtigen. Sehr beeindruckend ist die Größe der ganzen Anlage, es gibt richtige Straßen und man braucht einen Plan um sich zurechtzufinden. Da wird einem besonders deutlich, dass wirkliche eine komplette Stadt verschüttet wurde. BEsonders beeindruckend sind die Figuren und die großen Amphitheater, die wirklich gut erhalten sind. Wir waren im Sommer da, und es war wirklich ziemlcih drückend heiß. Am Ende waren wir froh dass wir wieder ins klimatisierte AIDA SChiff gekommen sind.

Coincidió que mi visita a Italia fue durante la semana de la cultura, por lo que la entrada era gratuita. Gracias a ello entré, de lo que me alegro enormemente!
A pesar de resultar demasiado grande como para visitarlo con detenimiento en un solo día, hay zonas verdaderamente maravillosas y muy bien conservadas. Pequeños anfiteatros, antiguas casas nobles, e incluso ‘anuncios publicitarios’ pintados en edificios y que sobrevivieron a la erupciónd el Vesubio.
También hay un museo en el que se conservan moldes de algunas personas muertas durante la erupción, con lo que puede verse su reacción un lugar donde el tiempo se ha detenido y que no hay que dejar escapar si se visita Nápoles, está a media horita en tren!

Pompeji wurde auf einen Lavahügel gebaut, in Meeresnähe und am Fluss Sarno. Diese Stadt war durch regen Handel sehr reich geworden, 20.000 Menschen lebten damals schon in Pompeji. Sie hatten sehr schöné Häuser, eigene Zisternen, Thermen, gepflasterte Straßen, Wirtshäuser, Tempel, Atriumhäuser mit dem Garten und Brunnen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wurde die blühende Stadt von zwei Gouverneuren regiert. Sämtliche Nachrichten, Veranstaltungen usw. wurden durch Schreiber an den Wänden von Gebäuden bekannt gegeben. Also alles war schon sehr modern für die damalige Zeit.
Immer wieder gab es Erdbeben, 62.n.Chr. wurde die Stadt zerstört, sie war fast schon wieder fertig aufgebaut als am 24. August 79.n.Chr. der Vesuv ausbrach. Mit einer solchen Gewalt, Explosionen, Giftgase und Aschenregen. Die Stadt wurde nach und nach mit einer Aschenschicht von 6 bis 9 Metern überzogen und es gab ganz wenig Überlebende.
2000 Jahre später nach vielen Ausgrabungen ab 1909 unter Vitorio Spinazzola bis heute wurden viele Gebäude, Straßen, Menschen, Gefäße, Gemälde, Pflanzen zum Teil versteinert freigelegt. Pomeji muss man gesehen haben, die große Kultur und die historischen Zeugnisse der damaligen Zeit, einfach interessant
Der Eintritt in Pompeji kostet zu Zeit 11.-EUR, für Schüler, Kinder unter 18 Jahre sowie Rentner ab 65 Jahre 5,50 EUR.

Pompeji ein gewisser Hauch von Abenteuer und Düsternis geht von diesem Namen aus, gar nicht passend zu der trockenen Hitze, in der man südlich von Neapel an den Eingang des ausgedehnten Grabungsgeländes gelangt. Im Jahre 79 n. Chr. Wurde die reiche Stadt innerhalb weniger Tage durch die Asche des Vesuvs verschüttet, meterhohe Schichten begruben Häuser, Paläste, Stadien tief unter sich, viele Menschen konnten sich nicht rechtzeitig retten und die Überlebenden der Katastrophe waren nur zu einem geringen Teil bereit, wieder an diesen Ort zurückzukehren und ihre Schätze dem Boden zu entreißen.
Somit ruhte diese Stadt über 1500 Jahre im Erdboden und wurde erst ab 1750 systematisch ausgegraben, zunächst als Schatzsuche, später auch im wissenschaftlichen Interesse. Bis heute wurden 80% der alten Stadt freigelegt, dennoch gibt es immer wieder Überraschungen bei den Grabungen ich selbst war innerhalb von 20 Jahren zweimal da und beim Wiederkehren extrem erstaunt über die Ausmaße, die der Stadtplan mittlerweile angenommen hat.
In Pompeji wird die Geschichte, die man sonst mit Abstand aus Büchern gelernt hat plötzlich zu etwas begreifbarem. Die Häuser, die Steinblöcke, die Straßen alles spiegelt ein reales Alltagsleben wider, nicht abgehobene Riten wie in Tempeln oder unmäßigen Reichtum wie in Palästen, die anderswo zu besichtigen sind hier sieht man die Bäckerei, die Schmiede, die Werkstätten, kleine Villen, Bäder, ei Kornsilo mit Wiegestelle (Horreum), das Haus des Chirurgen und vieles mehr, das einem das antike Leben dem heutigen vergleichbar macht. Alles liegt natürlich weitgehend in Ruinen, aber die Weite der Stadt erzeugt eine dichte Intensität, ein Realitätsgefühl, dass einen manchmal sogar traurig über den Verlust dieses blühenden Lebens werden lässt! Dazwischen sind immer wieder erhaltene Kunstwerke zu bewundern, tiefrote Wandmalereien, Mosaikböden in Wasserbassins, die berühmte tanzend teuflische Statue des Fauns in der gleichnamigen Villa. Besonders beeindruckend: Die Vorläufer des Zebrastreifens. Hohe Steine, die quer über die Straße liegen, genau im Abstand der standardisierten Wagenachsen, damit die Bürger trockenen Fußes über die dreckige Fahrbahn gelangen konnten genial und so real!
Natürlich kommen dann auch Pracht– und Sakralbauten. Wer die Bauten von Paestum nicht weit von hier gesehen hat, wird die Tempel von Jupiter, Apollo und Isis (!) nicht ganz so beeindruckend finden, immerhin gibt es zwei Theater (piccolo und grande mit immerhin 5000 Plätzen), mehrere Bäder (Terme Stabiane), Hauptplätze und vieles mehr das Beeindruckende liegt auch hier weniger im Detail als in der historischen Kraft und Vollständigkeit dieser Ruinenstadt!
Man sollte unbedingt mit einem Stadtplan unterwegs sein, die Straßenzüge können in der Hitze sehr lang werden, und es ist sehr heiß hier, wo keine schattenspendenden Grünpflanzen vorhanden sind. Pompeji ist wirklich eine Aschewüste! Und die Gastronomie auf dem Gelände ist teuer und nicht besonders gut, daher besser Vorräte mitbringen. Für den Besuch sollte man mindestens 3 Stunden einplanen, besser noch mehr — ansonsten gibt es viele weitere Attraktionen in der Gegend: Herculaneum, den Vesuv, Neapel, Paestum, Ischia, Capri man sollte also länger in dieser Gegend verweilen außerdem ist die Amalfi-​Küste so schön
